This will be my second as Chairman, as I I am pleased that this is the third time during my Presidency that EFSA was when we held it in 2007. I Wales has organised the European Shore Championships and more so also had the good fortune to win because this is the second time we have come here to North Wales and the individual title in 1998 when last time it was such a success. Rino Philip President EFSA Wales Chairman EFSA Wales 1 European Shore Fishing Championships Pwllheli 2010 European Shore Championship Rules 2010 1. The competition will be run under the rules of EFSA Wales & EFSA, in force at the time. 2. Only 1 rod & reel may be used at any one time, a second may be assembled with line through the eyes but no terminal tackle attached. 3. A maximum of 3 hooks are allowed on a trace. A treble counts as 3 hooks. 4. Double patting and spare baited traces are allowed. 5. No wading above knee level. 6. Competitors must return to their peg on the foreshore after casting. 7. Anglers will be drawn into their zones at registration and must fish from their allocated peg as drawn at Peg 1 in their zone 1 hour before the start of the session. 8. Only the bait supplied by EFSA Wales may be used with no bait additives. 9. Each competitor will act as a steward & must make themselves fully aware of the rules. There will be no excuse for non compliance. 10. The matches will be fished to length, on a catch and return basis. 11. Competitors who attempt to increase the length of any fish will be disqualified . 12. Unused bait must be returned to the Organisers at the end of the day & not carried over. Failure to comply will result in disqualification . 13. No litter or dead fish must be left on the beaches. Remove it all including your peg marker. 14. An adjacent angler must sign each fish on the match card & sign off the card at the end of the fishing session for the total number of fish caught. Each Angler must also return their card along with their peg to peg 1 in their zone and sign for their score on the master-card, before leaving the beach. Any failure to comply with this fully may result in disqualification . 15. The person signing the angler’s fish & totals must be from a different nation. 16. All fish must be signed for before the catching angler can reel in again. 17. Under no circumstances are fish to be kept after having been signed for. All, including any undersize, must be returned to the sea immediately in full view of the signing angler. 18. Any fish kept for culinary purposes must be over the legal minimum size & must have their tail removed, having been humanely dispatched, in full view of the angler who signed for it. 19. The Organisers shall not be liable for any loss or damage incurred during the Championships. 20. The relevant team captain must hand any complaint, in writing, to the Organisers within 1 hour of the end of the day’s match. 21. All fish measured in centimetres from nose to tail and must be over 20 centimetres except for Lesser Spotted Dogfish, which are all recorded at 35 centimetres, and all types of Ray or Skate, which are to be recorded at 40 centimetres. 22. The protest committee will consist of: Phil Lustig (EFSA HQ), John O’Connor (Wales), and three other commitee members from the representing countries. 23. The first 2 days results will be posted in HQ hotel the following morning. The final result will be available for scrutiny prior to the presentation & dinner. 2 European Shore Fishing Championships Pwllheli 2010 Agenda Most Likely Catch! Saturday 6 th November Pwllheli South Beach – Deep Bait distribution 9am Fishing 11am – 4pm water at distance over clean sand with a few patches of shingle and weed. Gimlet Rock end (East) Saturday 6 th November shallower. Presentation Dinner 8pm. Celtic Royal (In Uniform) . Abererch – mainly clean sand but Times of fishing may vary. Mechanisms of flooding in the Mawddach catchment GRAHAM HALL & ROGER CRATCHLEY Centre for Arid Zone Studies and School of Agricultural and Forest Sciences, University of Wales, Bangor, UK [email protected] Abstract Rainfall distribution across the Mawddach catchment recorded at 22 raingauges does not correlate well with ground elevation, instead suggesting that maximum precipitation is generated at valley heads where maximum uplift occurs. Streams within the Mawddach catchment have their sources in upland blanket bogs. Water table monitoring shows the water storage capacity of older humified peat to be very limited, with saturation possible during a single storm event—throughflow is concentrated in zones of younger Sphagnum peat. Large thicknesses of glacial and periglacial deposits infill river gorges in the catchment. Hillslope throughflow monitoring indicates that saturation of these deposits can create conditions for rapid runoff and flooding downstream. Temperature monitoring of river bed sediments has identified resurgence of groundwater after prolonged rainfall, further increasing river discharge. Computer modelling predicts that flood plain forestry within the catchment can provide significant temporary storage for peak discharge, reducing flood levels downstream. Historical reconstruction from micromorphology: a case study from the Lleyn Peninsula, Wales 4.1 Introduction Understanding the causes of microstructures (Chapters Two, Three) and recognising their spatial relationships allows us to reconstruct the environmental history of deposits. In this chapter the environmental history of a deposit at Criccieth, North Wales (Figure 4.1), is reconstructed in more detail than is possible using macroscale features. Such studies are all too rare, partly because of our ignorance as to the causes of microstructures, and partly because of a lack of confidence in microstructural homogeneity on a larger scale. Both views can be attributed to the youth of microstructural research. Such interpretations are, in fact, reasonable - if care is taken over their application. While it is essential that further studies are made of heterogeneity within small areas of outcropping glaciogenic sediments, it should be remembered that the same scale differences are encountered in other branches of geology. The Quaternary deposits of the Lleyn peninsula, in North Wales, have been the source of much controversy. Past discussions centred on the number of terrestrial glaciations in the area (Saunders, 1968 vs. Boulton, 1977). However, present interest in the peninsula stems from an older debate; that between the supporters of terrestrial glaciations and glaciomarine floods. Eyles and McCabe (1989) have split workers by suggesting that the Irish Sea deposits are glaciomarine (Figure 4.1). This origin would add weight to the theory that the last major deglaciation (d180 Stage 2®1) was so rapid because the edge of the major ice sheets were floated from their beds (Broecker and Denton, 1990).
