JILL ADKINS Hi I’m Jill! I graduated from Platte Valley High School this year and will attend Colorado State University in the fall! Following earning my degree I plan to go to dental school and then continue to study orthodontics and oral surgery. I would like to say thanks to my parents for always supporting me and cheering me on, as well as the rest of my family and my awesome boyfriend. I’d also like to say thank you to all the wonderful people at the dance factory, especially Lynn Bassett for always believing in me and seeing my potential. My time at the dance factory has made such a huge impact on me and who I am, and I am very grateful for that! I’d like to say one last thank you to all of the friends I’ve made at the dance factory who made it feel like a second home! Thanks for watching me grow up; I’m so thankful and grateful for everything! <3 LESLIE MARTINEZ My name is Leslie Martinez. I graduated from Greeley West High School, class of 2021. My plans after high school include me going to the University of Colorado Boulder. I plan to be a dance teacher while I am staying in Boulder. My dream and ultimate goal is to do commercial dance in Los Angeles. No matter what path I take in life, dance will always be a part of it. None of this could have been possible without the overwhelming support that I have received. I joined the Dance Factory later than most people, but the love that I have felt has made it seem that I have been a part of the family the whole time. I want to give special thanks to: Gina Haug, Nicole Haug, Lynn Varriano Bassett, Kate Suiter, Melony Kerksiek. The most special thank you's to Kaitlyn Beale, you have been the most amazing supporter. I would not be where I am without you. Last but certainly not least thank you to Megan Pershing Long, you are the reason I can call the dance factory home, no one has made me feel proud of myself like you have. Thank you to The Dance Factory for the most memorable six years, I love you all. JORDAN PATCH Hey It’s Jordan!! I graduated from Windsor High School with honor Summa Cum Laude and ranked 14th out of 326 students. I am furthering my dance career being an apprentice tapper with Tap into the Network, a traveling tap intensive. I will currently take a gap year to focus on chasing my dreams. I want to give a huge thank you to my family for the amazing support, life lessons, and love throughout my life. I would also want to give the biggest thank you to Dance Factory. It has truly been an amazing 15 years and more to come ;) I’m so thankful I get to call this amazing place my second home and family. Within that family I want to thank all the teachers for challenging me to be my best and dealing with the hot mess that I am. I also want to thank my dance team, friends, and God for always believing in me and being the best. Here’s to the next chapter <3 ALISON REED Hello! My name is Alison Reed. Recently, I graduated from Frontier Academy. Next year, I will be studying advertising at the University of Alabama to pursue a career in social media marketing. I wanted to take a moment to thank my parents for allowing me to chase my love of being on stage, my dance teachers for pushing me to be the best dancer and person possible, and all of my fellow dancers for inspiring me and always making me smile. “WE LIVE FOR THE APPLAUSE” Tuesday June 15th, 4:30pm 1. NEXT STEPS DECATUR ANNUAL REPORT 2019 City of Decatur Clear zone JULY-AUGUST 2019 Volume 30 • Number 1 OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE CITY OF DECATUR, GEORGIA FNew ocuLiving Walls s Mural on North Candler Street n June Living Walls unveiled its newest mural, titled Monuments: Our Immigrant Mothers, by artist Yehimi Cambron. The mural is at 302 E. Howard IAve. at the corner of N. Candler and E. Howard. The project is a part of Living Walls’ annual Laura Patria Calle Grant, which supports public art projects on the topics of social equality, immigrants’ rights, feminism, LGBTQ rights and cultural diversity. Monuments: Our Immigrant Mothers aims to bring representa- tion to the mothers who crossed borders to give their immigrant children a better life. The mural’s message seeks to inspire a conver- sation about immigrant rights in our country. The artist, Yehimi Cambron, said the project is a culmination of her personal experience as an undocumented immigrant with DACA, of being the daughter of undocumented parents, and of the countless migration stories her students have shared with her in the classroom through their projects. The mural depicts three portraits of immigrant mothers sur- rounded by the imagery of desert plants and their colorful flowers, to represent the contrast of her strength and vulnerability and how they inform one another. The imagery also alludes to her family’s migration journey in an effort to shift an often-criminalized narra- tive into one of empowerment. The monarch butterflies surrounding each mother represent their children. The monarch butterfly is a reflection of the migration journey and a symbol of the resilience of their community.

We also celebrate two outstanding members of our community whose service and support was recognized with the 2017 Col. Francis T. Colby Award. It was an honor to salute trustee emeritus M. Dozier Gardner and trustee emerita Wendy W. Kistler for their dedication to this institution through their time, treasure, and talents. Celebrations It’s hard to believe that a year has passed since the Museum received its largest gift ever from Bloomberg Philanthropies. Michael Bloomberg has said that the Museum of Science was the “first teacher to have a profound impact” on his life. His gift, which established the William and Charlotte Bloomberg Science Education Center, will enable literally millions of young people to have the same kind of life-changing experiences that he had as a boy visiting Museum. Gwill York, Ioannis Miaoulis, Michael Bloomberg, Gov. Charlie Baker, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, Medford Mayor Stephanie Burke, In a year when the Museum welcomed its 70-millionth and Cambridge Mayor E. Denise Simmons visitor (on October 7, 2016) and received more gifts Our In Gratitude feature celebrates the $10 million gift from our members and visitors than ever before, we from MathWorks that will fund the design and fabrication have so much to celebrate.

  • Time in the Odes of Horace Courtney Mackenzie Evans
Time in the Odes of Horace Courtney Mackenzie Evans Concord, NH B.A. The Evergreen State College 2003 M.A. University of Virginia 2009 A Dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Classics University of Virginia May, 2016 © 2016 Courtney Evans i Abstract This dissertation explores Horace’s engagement with time in the Odes, both as a concept and as a poetic device. It begins with a study of the language Horace uses to describe and characterize time, the words which form the basic building blocks with which Horace constructs the temporal world of his poetry. From there the scope widens to consider Horace’s employment of seasonal imagery and how he uses seasons as similes, seasons within similes, and as the dramatic setting for individual poems to create a juxtaposition of linear and cyclical time. The third chapter investigates Horace's tendency to call for dated wines for his symposia, and how this makes wine into a locus for memory, and its consumption into a time for commemoration, either celebratory or reflective. I argue that Horace’s use of temporal markers—words for time, temporal adverbs, seasonal imagery, dated wine, anniversaries, and the use of the Roman fasti—results in a poignant and persistent articulation of loss, and that the symposium becomes the locus for exploring that loss as well as the tensions between public present and private memory of the past. Horace’s poetry is both a product of and commentary on the author’s own time, as the Republic fades forever into Empire.
