Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings November 21, 2012 CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Pitching is pricey, transactions By John Fay | 11/20/2012 12:17 PM ET Want to know why the Reds would be wise to lock up Homer Bailey and Mat Latos long-term? The Kansas City Royals agreed to a three-year deal with Jeremy Guthrie that pays him $5 million on 2013, $11 million in 2014 and $9 million in 2015. He went 8-12 with a 4.76 ERA and 1.41 WHIP. Bailey went 13-10 with a 3.68 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. Latos went 14-4 with a 2.48 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. It’s a bit apples and oranges: Guthrie is a free agent; Bailey is arbitration-eligible for the second time, Latos for the first. But the point is starting pitching — even mediocre starting pitching — is expensive. SIX ADDED: The Reds added right-handers Carlos Contreras, Daniel Corcino, Curtis Partch and Josh Ravin, left-hander Ismael Guillon and outfielder Yorman Rodriguez to the roster in order to protect them from the Rule 5 draft. Report: Former Red Frank Pastore badly hurt in motorcycle wreck By dclark | 11/20/2012 7:55 PM ET The Inland Valley Daily Bulletin is reporting that former Cincinnati Reds pitcher Frank Pastore, a Christian radio personality in California, was badly injured Monday night after being thrown from his motorcycle onto the highway near Duarte, Calif. From dailybulletin.com’s Juliette Funes: A 55-year-old motorcyclist from Upland was taken to a trauma center when his motorcycle was hit by a car on the 210 Freeway Monday night.

  • Indians Party Like It's 1997 After Winning Pennant
Indians party like it's 1997 after winning pennant Cleveland will host Game 1 of the World Series for first time in its history By Jordan Bastian / MLB.com | @MLBastian | 12:38 AM ET TORONTO -- They took turns passing the trophy around. A bottle in one hand and the hardware in the other, one by one, Cleveland's players savored their moment. They would stare at it, champagne dripping from the gold eagle that sits atop the black base, pausing for a moment before posing for photos. In that brief personal moment, the players probably thought about all that had to happen for the Indians to reach this stage, for that trophy to be placed in their arms. Wednesday's 3-0 win over the Blue Jays in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series, a victory that clinched the franchise's sixth AL pennant, gave the world a look at what has defined this Indians team all season long, and why it is now going to the World Series. "I'm just really happy that we're standing here today," said Indians president Chris Antonetti, as his players partied on the other side of Rogers Centre's visitors' clubhouse. "However we got here, I'm not sure I've reflected back on. But this team, the resiliency, the grit, the perseverance to overcome all that they've gone through over the course of the season ..." More champagne bottles popped behind him. "The guys we have are not focused on who's not here," he continued, "but focused on the guys that are here and [they] try to find a way to help them win.

  • Baseball Banquet on Friday, January 31, Which Dkicked-Off the Beginning of the 2014 Patriot Base- Ball Season
allas Baptist University hosted its 22nd annual baseball banquet on Friday, January 31, which Dkicked-off the beginning of the 2014 Patriot base- ball season. The evening was particularly special as three former Patriots were the first to be inducted into the program’s Ring of Honor. The three honorees (pictured top, left to right), Brandon Bantz (Seattle Mariners), Victor Black (New York Mets), and Ryan Goins (Toronto Blue Jays) all made their major debuts during the 2013 Major League Baseball season. The evening also provided an opportunity to pay tribute to two individuals without whom the new Horner Ballpark would not be possible. Ron Skaggs, DBU trustee and former chair of the architecture firm HKS, Inc., and his son, David, who currently works as an architect for HKS, received the 2014 Patriot Special Recognition Award for their work in designing Horner Ballpark (pictured middle). HKS is known for its design of the venues for the Dallas Mavericks, Dallas Cowboys, and Texas Rangers, to name just a few, and through the help of Ron and David Skaggs, the group designed the award- winning new home of the DBU Patriots. In addition, the Dallas-Fort Worth chapter of the So- ciety for American Baseball Research presented former DBU player Duncan McAlpine as their 2013 Metroplex Player of the Year. Duncan (pictured lower middle, with Bo Carter (left) and Paul Rogers from SABR) had a standout senior season and was drafted last year into the Detroit Tigers organization. “This year’s baseball banquet was one of the best that I have had the privilege of attending since being at DBU,” said Connor Smith, who serves as the Acting Director of Athletics.

The Reds lose to the Pittsburgh Pirates, 10-1, before a sellout crowd of 42,343 MLB.COM Get the season started with 30 cool Statcast stats for 30 teams MLB.com analyst Mike Petriello looks back at the some of the best Statcast findings in the inaugural year of the new analysis tool By Mike Petriello / MLB.com | @mike_petriello | March 30th, 2016 + 0 COMMENTS This marks the second season of Statcast™, and that means we have an entire season of data about exit velocity, spin rate, extension, arm strength, lead distance, launch angle and just about anything else you can think of, for every team. Let's get the season started in style by running down an interesting Statcast™ stat for each team -- in many cases, something that never could have been measured prior to 2015. AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST Blue Jays: 1.07 seconds: Ryan Goins' baseball-leading exchange time, which is a way to measure the time that elapses between a fielder receiving the ball and releasing the throw. What that means is that no infielder in the game managed to get rid of the ball as quickly as Goins did, which makes sense given his stellar defensive reputation. Orioles: 82.2 mph: Darren O'Day's average exit velocity against on four-seam fastballs, the second lowest among 407 pitchers who threw at least 100 of them. Despite averaging just 88 mph on his otherwise unimposing fastball, O'Day's swing-and-miss rate of 36.8 percent was better than every pitcher other than Aroldis Chapman, and the hitters that did make contact against O'Day's funky sidearm delivery failed to make good contact, leading to a .097 average against it.

Sometimes so very close for the Angels, more often blindly out of reach. It was some bad stretch the Angels were going through. They weren’t getting blown out every night as much as simply pushed aside, very rude-like. In their 10 previous games they had squeaked out a win exactly once. Only Saturday offered a glimpse into another baseball life, one rife with timely hits and serious starting pitching, one that resulted in a 5-4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
