Royals Notes - Milwaukee Brewers @ Kansas City Royals - Wednesday, April 25, 2018

This & That WHAT HAPPENED TO SRPING???--After starting last night’s contest with a comfortable 73 degree temperature, Mother Nature was teasing the Midwest as tonight’s expected game time temp will be hovering around the 50-degree mark...should the first pitch temperature tonight by some chance be 51 degrees, it would match the average first pitch temp for every outdoor game played by the Royals to this point in 2018...KC has played 13 games below the 60-degree level this year, including all of its nine outdoor road games...things have been a little more palatable at home with temps varying from a low of 42 degrees (twice) to a high of 79 vs. the Angels on April 12...for the record, the temps in Toronto never left the 30’s during last week’s stop there, but all games were enclosed... Kansas City has already had four games postponed this year, including the near impossible, which was a postponement in Toronto on April 16 when ice came through the roof of the Rogers Centre...that contest was made up April 17, then an April 4 game in Detroit was made up last Friday...another will be played this Saturday when the White Sox are here to make up for the Easter Sunday snowstorm...lastly, the Royals and Angels will get together here on Monday, June 25 to atone for the April 15 weathered-out affair here...that contest will fall during a Royal road trip, as KC will fly from a Sunday game in Houston to play here at 3:15 on Monday and then depart for Milwaukee for a Tuesday night affair. BUSY TIMES--Last night started a stretch of 14 games in 13 days, which will include a five-game series with the Chicago White Sox starting tomorrow night which includes a day/night doubleheader on Saturday (1:15 and 7:15)...of the 14-game stretch, 11 will be contested here, with the lone interruption a three- game stop in Boston starting next Monday. ABE ADDS NAME TO ROYALS LORE--Outfielder Abraham Almonte capped a terrific weekend in Detroit with his second career grand slam on Sunday, but this one had much more value than just the four runs driven in...it was worth $25,000 to Jadah Bradley, a fan who had registered for the Sonic Slam inning that falls in the sixth inning of every game...Whit Merrifield’s leadoff home run in that frame netted Bradley $300, but then KC loaded the bases and Almonte unloaded them to give the Royals a 5-2 lead at the time...it was the second time in as many years a Royal had hit a sixth inning slam worth $25K, as Cameron Gallagher turned the trick last August 17 in Oakland with what is still his lone Major League home run...as for Abe lately, the April 2 waiver claim from Cleveland went 6-for-13 (.462) during the four-game stop in Motown. WHIT MERRI-ALL-OVER-THE-FIELD--Through the first 21 games of the season, Whit Merrifield has displayed the versatility that got him into the big leagues two seasons ago...he’s started games at four different defensive positions this season, at first base (2), second base (14), center field (1) and right field (3), while he’s also served as the Royals’ designated hitter once...he’s played exceptional defense, wherever he’s played on the field, committing just one error in 87 total chances for a .989 fielding percentage overall. DUPER REMAINS SUPER--One of the top replay reviewers in the game, Bill Duplissea kept his perfect 2018 mark in tact last Friday in Detroit, when in the first game he determined that Detroit’s Jeimer Candelario had been picked off first base and was proven correct after a review of 1:05...Duper is 5-for-5 now in successfully getting calls overturned via replay, while he has made good on over 66% of his challenges in his career, which ranks among the best, including a season mark of 69% (24-for-35) last year..Duper closed 2016 as the best in baseball with a 69.2% success rate, converting 27 of 39 challenges. ESKY THE IRON MAN--Kansas City shortstop Alcides Escobar, who re-signed with the Royals over the winter, continues to possess the longest active streak of starts in the Majors, starting his 354th consecutive contest last night...the next-closest player in consecutive starts is San Diego shortstop Freddy Galvis with 188. ROYALS JOIN THE TV TWITTER-VERSE-- has announced its first nine games that will not only will be carried by club rightsholders, but also live on Twitter...the Royals will join the fray on Wednesday, May 2 from Boston when Twitter will show the 12:05 (CDT) contest from Fenway Park... the game will also air on its normal home in Kansas City of FOX Sports Kansas City...there will be more Twitter games announced as the season progresses. NOT JUST THE TEAM’S 50TH SEASON--One common denominator with the Royals and this 50th season of baseball is Hall of Fame announcer Denny Matthews, who was in the booth with Buddy Blattner on April 8, 1969 and is once again calling the play-by-play during this milestone season...the Ford Frick Award winner in Cooperstown, NY in 2007, Matthews has been the one constant since the franchise came to be in ‘69...with this his 50th season, he trails only Los Angeles Dodger broadcasting icons Vin Scully (67 years prior to retiring) and Jaime Jarrin (59th season). AT THE HELM--The winningest manager in franchise history, Ned Yost is in his eighth full season with the club, taking the reins on May 13, 2010...he has a 634-648 regular season record at the helm for the Royals, surpassing Whitey Herzog’s previous team mark of 410 wins (1975-79)...Yost is the 16th full-time manager in franchise history and is sixth among active managers in games (2,241) and wins (1,091)...his postseason winning pct. of .710 (22-9) is tops among all managers in history who have worked at least 20 playoff games...this is his second stint as a big league manager after nearly six full campaigns at the helm for the Milwaukee Brewers (2003-2008)...he compiled a 457-502 record with the Brew Crew including a 166-146 mark in his last two seasons...Yost, a catcher during his playing days, began his coaching career in the Atlanta organization, including 12 straight seasons on Bobby Cox’s big league staff (1991-2002). RULE 5 HURLERS ON ROSTER--The Royals are carrying a pair of Rule 5 acquisitions on the roster with right-handed hurlers Brad Keller and Burch Smith... Keller, 22, was selected in last December’s Rule 5 draft from Arizona by Cincinnati and then dealt to KC, while the 28-year old Smith was acquired from the New York Mets after being selected in the draft...Keller spent the year in AA Jackson last year, while Smith has big league time with San Diego in 2013. INTERLEAGUE FOES--The 2018 campaign features Kansas City playing the National League Central in Interleague action, including home & home 2-game sets with Milwaukee and Cincinnati, a home & home 3-game series with St. Louis...also on the slate is a 3-game series in Kauffman Stadium against the Chicago Cubs (August 6-8) and 3-game road trip to Pittsburgh (September 17-19).
