#8 Quercus emoryi / Arctostaphylos pungens / Mixed Perennial Grass Wooded Shrubland Association (P) Emory oak / Pointleaf manzanita / Mixed Perennial Grass Wooded Shrubland Association This wooded shrubland community is characterized by a sparse (10%) tree canopy (>2 m) dominated by Emory oak (Quercus emoryi), a moderately Common species dense (20%) subcanopy (0.5–2 m) shrub layer dominated by pointleaf man- Quercus emoryi zanita (Arctostaphylos pungens), and a field stratum (<0.5 m) dominated by Quercus oblongifolia a variable mix of perennial grasses. In general, Emory oak (Q. emoryi) is Arctostaphylos pungens present as a short-statured (3–4 m) tree providing variable cover averaging Muhlenbergia emersleyi to 9%, but ranging from 3 to 20%. Mexican blue oak (Quercus oblongifolia) Aristida schiedeana is an occasional common associate, with local dominance rarely approach- ing 8%. The majority of cover within the subcanopy stratum is provided by pointleaf manzanita (A. pungens), with an average of 20% across the community, including areas reaching up to 40%. Other noteworthy shrubs and succulents include common sotol (Dasylirion wheeleri), California brickellbush (Brickellia californica), Palmer’s century plant (Agave palm- eri), evergreen sumac (Rhus virens), and catclaw mimosa (Mimosa aculeaticarpa). Overall, Lehmann lovegrass (Eragrostis lehmanniana) is the most dominant grass component, with variable cover ranging from absent up to 40%. Noteworthy native grass species include bullgrass (Muhlenbergia emersleyi), single threeawn (Aristida schiedeana), Texas bluestem (Schizachyrium cirratum), Plains lovegrass (Eragrostis intermedia), and sideoats grama (Bouteloua curtipendula). Overall, this community covers 8.2% (160 ha, 395 ac) of the park, mainly on low-angle (<15%), south-facing footslopes at 1,550–1,850 meters (5,085–6,070 ft). The Collection of Oak Trees of Mexico and Central America in Iturraran Botanical Gardens Francisco Garin Garcia Iturraran Botanical Gardens, northern Spain [email protected] Overview Iturraran Botanical Gardens occupy 25 hectares of the northern area of Spain’s Pagoeta Natural Park. They extend along the slopes of the Iturraran hill upon the former hay meadows belonging to the farmhouse of the same name, currently the Reception Centre of the Park. The minimum altitude is 130 m above sea level, and the maximum is 220 m. Within its bounds there are indigenous wooded copses of Quercus robur and other non-coniferous species. Annual precipitation ranges from 140 to 160 cm/year. The maximum temperatures can reach 30º C on some days of summer and even during periods of southern winds on isolated days from October to March; the winter minimums fall to -3º C or -5 º C, occasionally registering as low as -7º C. Frosty days are few and they do not last long. It may snow several days each year. Soils are fairly shallow, with a calcareous substratum, but acidified by the abundant rainfall. In general, the pH is neutral due to their action. Collections The first plantations date back to late 1987. There are currently approximately 5,000 different taxa, the majority being trees and shrubs. There are around 3,000 species, including around 300 species from the genus Quercus; 100 of them are from Mexico and Central America. It was originally established as a National Park Service Cooperative Park Studies Unit (CPSU) in 1973 with a research staff and ties to The University of Arizona. Transferred to the USGS Biological Resources Division in 1996, the SDFS continues the CPSU mission of providing scientific data (1) to assist U.S. Department of Interior land management agencies within Arizona and (2) to foster cooperation among all parties overseeing sensitive natural and cultural resources in the region. It also is charged with making its data resources and researchers available to the interested public. Seventeen such field stations in California, Arizona, and Nevada carry out WERC’s work. The SDFS provides a multi-disciplinary approach to studies in natural and cultural sciences. Principal cooperators include the School of Renewable Natural Resources and the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at The University of Arizona. Woodlands Author: Kerry Dooley Historically the primary interest area for national inventories was timber. Consequently, the national inventory framework and collection protocols were focused on productive timber- lands (USDA Forest Service 2005). Over time, information such as estimations of carbon sequestration, wildfire fuel loads, and nontimber forest products and services (e.g., biofuels and wildlife habitat) has become topics of increasing interest. The FIA program—the national inventory used in the United States—broadened the focus of its surveys to include non- timberland forests, including woodlands, better aligning with these changing focus areas. Woodlands generally occur in less productive growing condi- tions, such as the arid Southwestern United States. Woodlands provide much, if not all, of the same services provided by forests; that is, they function as important wildlife habitat, improve water quality, serve as carbon sinks (or sources, in the event of wildfires), and provide fuel during wildfire season. The species that comprise woodlands differ in characteristics from most trees. On average, woodland species tend to be slower growing, smaller in stature, and of a form with more forks and branches near the base of the tree. Woodland species often grow as clumps of stems rather than one central stem. Beyond the characteristics of the trees classified as woodland species, specific parameters pertain to classification of the land use category of woodlands, while the Resources Planning Act (RPA) derives calculations of woodland for this report from the FIA data, the FIA and RPA definitions of woodland differ somewhat, as outlined in the following paragraphs. (Quercus emoryi - Quercus oblongifolia) / Eragrostis lehmanniana Herbaceous Association (P) (Emory oak - Mexican blue oak) / Lehmann lovegrass Herbaceous Association (P) This herbaceous community is characterized by a very sparse (<<5% cover) tree canopy (>2 m) of Emory oak (Quercus emoryi) and/or Mexi- Common species can blue oak (Quercus oblongifolia), with a dense (>40% cover) matrix • Quercus oblongifolia of perennial grasses solely dominated by Lehmann lovegrass (Eragrostis • Quercus emoryi lehmanniana). The canopy oaks are present as small (3–4 ft) trees that • Eragrostis lehmanniana provide minimal (1–2%) cover. Alligator juniper (Juniperus deppeana) and velvet mesquite (Prosopis velutina) are the only other documented tree species. The subcanopy stratum (0.5–2 m) is characterized by a diverse but sparse (5% cover) mix of shrubs and succulents, with no consistent dominants or common as- sociates. Documented subcanopy components include common sotol (Dasylirion wheeleri), catclaw acacia (Mimosa aculeaticarpa), pointleaf manzanita (Arctostaphylos pungens), Palmer’s century plant (Agave palmeri), desertbroom (Baccharis sarothroides), cactus apple (Opuntia engelmannii), and beargrass (Nolina microcarpa). The field stratum (<0.5 m) is characterized by a dense (>40% cover) matrix of Lehmann lovegrass (E. lehman- niana). This species accounts for virtually all cover in this stratum and only has one documented associate, Schott’s century plant (Agave schotti). Rincon Mountain District, Saguaro National Park Rincon Mountain District, Saguaro This herbaceous community covers 0.1% (30 ha/74 ac) of the Rincon Mountain District and is present on the low slopes along the eastern boundary of the park, mainly between the Miller and Turkey Creek trailheads. It is restricted to south-trending hills of varying grade (10–30%) from 1,350 to 1,600 meters (4,429–5,250 ft).
