AUGUST 2014 OFFICIAL DESERT FLY CASTERS NEWSLETTER President's Drift Joe Staller • August 2014 I’ve been pretty good about making the club outings this year, but I could not make the July outing to Boulder Cove. I had a good reason though---I was fishing! Gentry Smith and I decided to get out of the heat and head up to the White Mountains for a long weekend. We fished Big Lake, Sunrise Lake, and a secret section of a popular White Mountain stream. Some nice fish were caught at Big Lake and Sunrise, but the highlight of the trip was definitely fishing a new section of stream for some skittish brown trout. But back to Boulder Cove. I heard reports that everyone got into good numbers of bluegill and bass, and in spite of the heat a good time was had by all. Thanks to Dick Brooks for taking over the hosting duties on short notice, and making sure that everyone, including the new members, had the right flies and right techniques to get into the fish. Thanks Dick! As previously reported, on Thursday June 26, the Gilbert Town Council unanimously approved a rule change for the Water Ranch to eliminate treble and barbed hooks, and to restrict bass and sunfish to catch and release. However, there is one more step before these rules go into effect—AZG&F needs to approve AUGUST them at their September 5-6 meeting. Wednesday, AZG&F is also proposing Change regulations for Horton Creek, and Grant Creek to single barbless hook, August 13, 2014 artificial fly and lure only and catch and release only for trout, and to reduce daily bag limits of trout on Chit-Chat: 5:30 • Dinner: 6:30 Chevelon Creek above and below Chevelon Lake as artificial fly and lure only, with reduced bag limits. Meeting/Guest Speaker: 7:00 If you would like to provide your input on all of these proposals, you have the following options available: Elks Lodge • Submit written comments for 30 days via email to [email protected] or 1775 West Chandler Blvd. • By mail to: Arizona Game and Fish Department, Fisheries Branch, c/o Andy Clark, 5000 W. Carefree Highway, Chandler, Arizona 85224 Phoenix, AZ 85086. Coming up on Sunday August 17 is the club outing to Salt River, which will be a float from Phon D Sutton. Get there early (6:00 a.m,) and don’t forget your sun block, hydration supplies, and camera. We are going to have a great time. Vince does a great job hosting this trip every year, and this year will be no exception! Tight Lines, keep your powder dry, and zip up your tent door at night. Those mice are sneaky. Very sneaky. Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc. is dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabili- tation of disabled active military service personnel and disabled veterans through fly fishing and associated activities, including education and outings. The first Project Healing Waters program began in 2005 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and has grown to 173 programs in 49 states. PHWFF (projecthealingwaters.org) is a 501(c)(3) organization, and relies upon the dona- tions and efforts of volunteers and affiliated organizations, including Federation of Fly Fishers, Trout Unlimited, and local fly fishing clubs. Project Healing Waters - Phoenix (phx-phwff.org) is in its second year, and under the direction of volunteers from Arizona Fly Casters the program is ready to expand in hopes of meeting the greater veteran demand of the Valley. A new sub-chapter will be established in the southeast Valley this fall, in affiliation with Desert Fly Casters. Disabled active and retired US military personnel are welcome to attend the Project Healing Waters program, which will include education, fly tying, rod building, and outing opportunities. Those interested in volunteering, regardless of expertise, are also encouraged to speak to a DFC board member for more information. I...we need help on this, Please catch me, Chris Huber, at: [email protected] Thank you! Location to be at The Links at Queen Creek Saturday, September 13, 2014 THIS Becker Lake Outing JUST You don’t want to miss this one! IN.... Dates: Thursday, Oct 30 – Sunday, Nov 2, 2014 Where: Springerville, AZ Lodging: Rode Inn Motel Host: Gentry Smith | Phone: (480) 213-0372 | [email protected] Cost(s): $140 per person – 3-nights lodging, based on two-people (double occupancy) per room $100 per person – 2-nights lodging, based on two-people (double occupancy) per room Big fish, a comfy room, and a free dinner… what more could you want? The club has once again reserved a block of rooms at the Rode Inn Motel located in the town of Springerville, just minutes away from Becker Lake. All rooms at the Rode Inn feature two queen beds, television, refrigerator, coffee pot, microwave oven and free Wi-Fi. Single King rooms are available upon request ($200 2-nights / $280 3-nights). We will have access to their banquet room Friday night, where will host a group dinner for DFC members staying at the motel. This meal is included in the cost of this trip. Becker Lake is a special regulation, catch-and-release, trophy trout lake. You may only use single, barbless hooks to go after the 16-22- inch rainbows trout that reside there. Please advise all trout must be immediately released at Becker. You will want to bring a personal watercraft, 4-6wt fly rod(s), and both floating and sinking fly lines (intermediate, or type-2). This has become a favorite club trip for many, because it consistently produces some of the largest trout you will find in Arizona. This trip is especially good for newer anglers looking to build their confidence in the sport. Also located nearby are: Silver Creek, the Greer Lakes, Carnero Lake, Lee Valley Lake, Crescent Lake, and the Little Colorado River, just to name a few.
