  • Street Art Rising Marshall Soules—[email protected]
Vol 1 No 2 (Autumn 2020) Online: jps.library.utoronto.ca/index.php/nexj Visit our WebBlog: newexplorations.net Street Art Rising Marshall Soules—[email protected] This illustrated article discusses the various manifestations of street art—graffiti, posters, stencils, social murals—and the impact of street art on urban environments. Continuing perceptions of street art as vandalism contributing to urban decay neglects to account for street art’s full spectrum of effects. As freedom of expression protected by law, as news from under-privileged classes, as images of social uplift and consciousness-raising, and as beautification of urban milieux, street art has social benefits requiring re-assessment. Street art has become a significant global art movement. Detailed contextual history includes the photographer Brassai's interest in Parisian graffiti between the world wars; Cézanne’s use of passage; Walter Benjamin's assemblage of fragments in The Arcades Project; the practice of dérive (passage through diverse ambiances, drifting) and détournement (rerouting, hijacking) as social and political intervention advocated by Guy Debord and the Situationist International; Dada and Surrealist montage and collage; and the art of Quebec Automatists and French Nouveaux réalistes. Present street art engages dynamically with 20th C. art history. The article explores McLuhan’s ideas about the power of mosaic style to subvert the received order, opening spaces for new discourse to emerge, new patterns to be discovered. The author compares street art to advertising, and raises questions about appropriation, authenticity, and style. How does street art survive when it leaves the streets for galleries, design shops, and museums? Street art continues to challenge communication strategies of the privileged classes and elected officials, and increasingly plays a reconstructive role in modulating the emotional tenor of urban spaces.

  • The Journal of Social Theory in Art Education (JSTAE)
i PreOccupy/Maximum Occupancy Kryssi Staikidis Northern Illinois University [email protected] Editorial When the Editor and Associate Editor conceived of this call for papers for PreOccupy/Maximum Occupancy, it was based on the Caucus members’ input during the annual meetings of the Caucus on Social Theory and Art Education (CSTAE) at the National Art Education Association conference, NAEA 2012, New York. We listened to our colleagues speak about the year’s events, and we discussed how we as art educators could respond to the needs of the Caucus and of our field for Volume 33 of the Journal of Social Theory in Art Education (JSTAE). Staikidis, K. (2013) PreOccupy/Maximum Occupancy. (editorial). The Journal of Social Theory In Art Education (33) (K. Staikidis, Ed.). i-vii. ii As Editors developing a call for papers, Sharif Bey and I used a kind of call and response method of work. We questioned, debated, and discussed the Caucus dialogues during which a variety of possible themes arose—geography of the body, viruses-viral, trickle up, banding together, immaterial, and preoccupy/maximum occupancy. PreOccupy/Maximum Occupancy was chosen by the group. As Sharif and I worked, we distilled our own ideas related to the theme in a somewhat non-linear way, ending with the question: How might we create a call broad enough to elicit multiple submissions that could and would inspire writers, artists, educators, and activists? Since we could not visit each other’s homes, we did this through virtual collaboration. At the end of each session, we sent each other some questions, or prose, a poem maybe, the result of our conversations, our easy exchange of ideas.

  • By Jessica Boerschinger Tisements Seek out New “Real-Estate” for Their Ads
Is it possible to convey something without it being a part of the media driven culture? Or is media infuencing our culture to the point where we will always be fueling it and being fueled by it? In Sut Jhally’s lecture "Advertising and the Perfect Storm" he discusses how media has permeat- ed every aspect of our culture and we have become blind to it’s existence. I would like to propose there are still creative avenues for making, without the infuence from capitalist driven media. I will explore the idea of culture jamming in this essay to see if this form of media is still feeding the system Jhally claims “…will be responsible for destroying the world as we know it.” And with my visual project I will hopefully represent how media art does not have to be made purely for the sake of advertisements. At frst it feels as though Sut Jhaley has a very extreme and negative view on the world and our cultural future. What he claims seems too big and manipulative to be true. However once he begins to break down how advertising dominates our visual/audible world you see how harmful advertising can be and how invasive it has become. He uses the word “colonizing” when describing how adver- By Jessica Boerschinger tisements seek out new “real-estate” for their ads. Some ads are uniquely creative while some will make you recon- sider the unusual and sometimes ofensive ways adver- tisement can discriminate people. In recent years, advertising has had to evolve and come up with cutting-edge cam- paigns with new, interesting locations for their ads, due to the masses becoming accustomed to the hundreds of ads we see and hear every day.
