An iconic episode in German literature turns on the problem of landscape. In a letter to his confidant Wilhelm, Goethe’s Werther describes the recent encounter with a certain Lotte, soon to become the object of the young hero’s storied passion. At the invitation of a common acquaintance, he has accompanied her to a country dance, which is interrupted by a sudden thunderstorm. Werther, whose emotions the storm complements, is entranced by the young woman, who manages to distract the frightened celebrants with a parlor game. As the storm finally abates René Magritte, The Human Condition (thunder still rolling in the distance), the two find themselves (1933) at a window gazing out over the rain-drenched scene. Overcome by sentiment, Lotte takes Werther’s hand and, eyes moist, exclaims “Klopstock!,” invoking the poet whose popular ode “Die Frühlingsfeier” (1759) summons a landscape redolent with spring and blessed by rainfall. Beyond serving as a kind erotic currency that passes between Lotte and Werther, Klopstock’s poem is itself a window that opens up within Goethe’s novel. A text framed within a text, it is an instance of the mirroring that, in twentieth-century modernism, often became the object of explicit irony. The Belgian Surrealist René Magritte, for example, often used window casements, mirrors, and paintings themselves to challenge the traditional conception of easel paintings as windows onto the natural-physical world. This same conception was already being undercut in the later eighteenth century, as illustrated by the episode just described: Werther and Lotte look out through a window onto a natural scene, which Klopstock’s ode, and the long tradition it represents, has prepared them to see. This tradition extends back into the seventeenth century, when “landscape” emerged as an artistic genre in which the natural setting became an object in its own right and not merely a backdrop to religious or mythological drama. The name generally identified with this development is Claude Lorraine (1600-1682), the popularity of whose paintings led to the invention of the “Claude glass,” a burnished and slightly convex lens that would endow the natural prospect with the tone and contour typical of Claude’s canvases. Four hundred years later, our phone cameras are provided with a “vignetting” tool that achieves the very same effect. Likewise, when we move our viewfinders vertically or horizontally to accommodate the “rule of thirds”—a principle most familiar nowadays to students of cinema—we reinforce compositional practices worked out over several centuries and across various media. This intermedial arc will afford us a context within which to position the more localized role of Landschaft in German literature, art, and eventually film. Goethe’s Werther will provide a platform from which to launch an examination of landscape as it figures into works, both verbal and visual, from the Romantic period through the twentieth century. Authors studied may include Friedrich Hölderlin, Novalis, Joseph von Eichendorff, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, Adalbert Stifter, Theodor Fontane, Anna Seghers, Sarah Kirsch, Peter Handke, and Maria Luise Kaschnitz, Wim Wenders. Supplemental readings by Georg Simmel, Martin Heidegger, and others. Particular 2 attention will be paid to Caspar David Friedrich, whose unique land- and seascapes (e. g., his Monk by the Sea, 1809-10) not only represent a break with the “framed viewing” (Rahmenschau) of the Enlightenment but also, upon his “rediscovery” in 1906, exercised considerable influence over German cinema as well as art. His importance for film can be traced from Expressionist cinematography of the 1920s to the works of New-Wave cinéaste Werner Herzog (Heart of Glass, Woyzeck, The Enigma C. D. Friedrich, The Monk by the Sea (1809-1810) of Kaspar Hauser). Moreover, Friedrich’s practice of furnishing his paintings with a Rückenfigur (a person seen from the back) has become a commonplace in the cinema generally—a framing adapted to interludes in which individuals search their souls, weigh decisions, nurse memories, or contemplate roads not taken. Goals. The word romantisch first appears in Goethe’s Werther, where it refers to a landscape such as those encountered in “romances” (hence the word) like Cervantes’ Don Quixote. The crux of this seminar is to familiarize participants with the legacy of the key shift in German cultural life that Romanticism, broadly defined, represents. Landscape provides a particular window onto this development; its importance lies in part in its role in the new national orientation that came with Romanticism, i. e., the novel interest in deutsche Landschaft apparent in Friedrich’s paintings and much of the literature of this period. Our efforts will be focused on reading/analyzing texts and images with an eye to landscape and its kindred topographical components, including “nature,” “world,” “forest,” “field,” “horizon,” “wilderness,” “garden,” “park,” and “paradise.” At the heart of our discussion will be aesthetics and the inherently aesthetic character of our experience of the world around us—our Umwelt. Format. I fully expect to conduct this seminar remotely. This may not seem optimal, but the course I conducted via Zoom this spring worked out quite well, I believe, and there may even be certain advantages to the remote format. My plan would be to hold our two weekly meetings (Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:15 – 5:45) synchronously. Readings will be in German. Language ability in courses at this level often varies among participants. Our approach to readings will be intensive rather than extensive, the focus being on shorter passages closely analyzed. I will try to lead discussions in German to the extent that proves possible. I will expect students to attend regularly, have their assignments prepared and their cameras on. His encounter with German culture and philosophy had tangible impacts on his own works of poetry. Fuad Rifka is being awarded the Goethe Medal for his impressive life’s work as a translator. Fuad Rifka’s passionate interest in German poets and thinkers began with a coincidental discovery at the Goethe-Institut Beirut more than forty years ago. It was there that Rifka found an English edition of Rainer Maria Rilke’s Duino Elegies. This volume of poetry made a lasting impression on him and awakened his desire to translate German poetry into Arabic, “to make it accessible to the entire Arabic world.” He was the first to translate Rilke’s poems directly from his mother tongue into Arabic without detours via English or French translations. Fuad Rifka was born in Syria in 1930. In the 1940s his family moved to Lebanon. He studied philosophy in Beirut and in 1965 completed his doctorate in Tübingen on the aesthetic of Martin Heidegger with a scholarship from the DAAD. When he returned to Lebanon he taught philosophy at the Lebanese American University Beirut from 1966 until 2005. German philosophers always had a fixed place in his syllabus. A number of teaching and research opportunities took Rifka to the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy and Germany. Fuad Rifka was a founding member of the Lebanese avant-garde poetry journal Shi’r (Poetry), which aimed to revolutionize traditional Arabic verse and move towards freer, experimental poetry.

The Alps, Richard Strauss’s Alpine Symphony and Environmentalism By Brooks Toliver Introduction After love and death, nature may well be European music’s preferred theme; it figures significantly in troubadour cansos, pastoral madrigals and operas, tone poems, impressionistic preludes, and elsewhere. In light of this it is puzzling how seldom actual nature is invoked in musical discourse. Composers—Richard Strauss among them—have been known to seek out nature in the manner of landscape painters, but there is no similar tradition among the critics, who ground nature-music and their judgments of it not in nature but in other music and criticism. When confronted with the vivid imagery of Strauss’s Alpine Symphony (1915), contemporaries wrote primarily of the aesthetics of vivid imagery, relegating the images themselves to the level of anecdote. Musicologists are quite adept at exploring the relationship of works to cultural constructions of nature, but relatively few have brought real environments into the discussion of canonical music. There has as yet been no serious consideration of how the Alps might be critical to an appreciation of the Alpine Symphony, nor has anyone theorized what the consequences of the Alpine Symphony might be for the Alps. Surely it is worth asking whether it metaphorically embodies sustaining or destructive relationships to the environment it represents, if it respects or disrespects nonhuman nature, and if love of nature is contingent on a symbolic domination of it, to name just three questions.

Sebald and Outsider Art by Melissa Starr Etzler Doctor of Philosophy in German and the Designated Emphasis in Film Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Winfried Kudszus, Chair This study focuses on a major aspect of literature and culture in the later twentieth century: the intersection of psychiatry, madness and art. As the antipsychiatry movement became an international intervention, W. G. Sebald’s fascination with psychopathology rapidly developed. While Sebald collected many materials on Outsider Artists and has several annotated books on psychiatry in his personal library, I examine how Sebald’s thought and writings, both academic and literary, were particularly influenced by Ernst Herbeck’s poems. Herbeck, a diagnosed schizophrenic, spent decades under the care of Dr. Leo Navratil at the psychiatric institute in Maria Gugging. Sebald became familiar with Herbeck via the book, Schizophrenie und Sprache (1966), in which Navratil analyzed his patients’ creative writings in order to illustrate commonalities between pathological artistic productions and canonical German literature, thereby blurring the lines between genius and madness. In 1980, Sebald travelled to Vienna to meet Ernst Herbeck and this experience inspired him to compose two academic essays on Herbeck and the semi-fictionalized account of their encounter in his novel Vertigo (1990).

He has often asserted that film is the art of i1literates and should not be a subject of scholarly analysis: "People should look straight at a film. That's the only \vay to see one. Film is not the art of scholars, but of illiterates. And film culture is not analvsis, it is agitation of the mind. Movies come from the count!)' fair and circus, not from art and academicism" (Greenberg 174). Herzog wants his ideal viewers to be both mesmerized by his visual images and seduced into seeing reality through his eyes. In spite of his reference to fairgrounds as the source of filmmaking and his repeated claims that his ·work has its source in images, it became immediately transparent already after the release of his first feature film that literature played an important role in the development of his films, a fact which he usually downplays or effaces. Given Herzog's fascination with the extremes and mysteries of the human condition as well as his penchant for depicting outsiders and eccentrics, it comes as no surprise that he found a kindred spirit in Georg Buchner whom he has called "probably the most ingenious writer for the stage that we ever had" (Walsh 11).

In subverting the traditional image of the witch, Kirsch establishes a new one: that of a feminist witch and a feminist witch-writer. The witch is both the fictive character created by Kirsch, and her own self-designation; in the latter case, writing, especially writing in the experimental fashion, is a form of witchcraft.
