Lyrical Abstraction
Lyrical Abstraction Findlay Galleries presents the group exhibition, Lyrical Abstraction, showcasing works by Mary Abbott, Norman Bluhm, James Brooks, John Ferren, Gordon Onslow Ford, Paul Jenkins, Ronnie Landfield, Frank Lobdell, Emily Mason, Irene Rice Pereira, Robert Richenburg, and Vivian Springford. The Lyrical Abstraction movement emerged in America during the 1960s and 1970s in response to the growth of Minimalism and Conceptual art. Larry Aldrich, founder of the Aldrich Museum, first coined the term Lyrical Abstraction and staged its first exhibition in 1971 at The Whitney Museum of American Art. The exhibition featured works by artists such as Dan Christensen, Ronnie Landfield, and William Pettet. David Shirey, a New York Times critic who reviewed the exhibition, said, “[Lyrical Abstraction] is not interested in fundamentals and forces. It takes them as a means to an end. That end is beauty...” Jackson Pollock’s drip paintings and Mark Rothko’s stained color forms provided important precedence for the movement in which artists adopted a more painterly approach with rich colors and fluid composition. Ronnie Landfield, an artist at the forefront of Lyrical Abstraction calls it “a new sensibility,” stating: ...[Lyrical Abstraction] was painterly, additive, combined different styles, was spiritual, and expressed deep human values. Artists in their studios knew that reduction was no longer necessary for advanced art and that style did not necessarily determine quality or meaning. Lyrical Abstraction was painterly, loose, expressive, ambiguous, landscape-oriented, and generally everything that Minimal Art and Greenbergian Formalism of the mid-sixties were not. Building on Aldrich’s concept of Lyrical Abstractions, Findlay Galleries’ exhibition expands the definition to include artists such as John Ferren, Robert Richenburg and Frank Lobdell. -

He started as a follower of Mies van der Rohe's most austere modernism, broke with this trend to design in a more "humane" modernistic vocabulary, and was one of the leaders of postmodernism during the 1980s. -

We have made the pairing of The Owl and The Pussycat in honor of Edward Lear’s poem and with the thought that it is just the kind of association Warhol would have made. In 1978 Martha Graham created a dance entitled The Owl and the Pussycat using the words from Lear’s famous poem. Rudolph Nureyev danced and Liza Minnelli was the narrator. The Owl and the Pussycat played at Covent Garden and in New York City. ( Diaries, p. 229-230) Andy was present at the Covent Garden opening on July 23, 1979. ( Diaries, p. 230) Both The Owl and The Pussycat share the same white background as well as interesting shadows in the photographs. Not exactly dancing “by the light of the moon,” as Lear wrote, but use your imagination! I sense a visual music that externalizes what I feel within me and in the air” – Ronnie Landfield Ronnie Landfield | 2 RONNIE LANDFIELD b. 1947 As a young boy, growing up in New York City, Landfield would visit the avant garde galleries of the time, taking in the Abstract Expressionist works of artists such as Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning, Hans Hofmann, Arshile Gorky and others. In the beginning, Landfield would study painting by visiting important museum and gallery exhibitions in New York City during the early 1960s and by taking painting and drawing classes at the Art Students League of New York and also in Woodstock, New York. As a student at the High School of Art and Design on 57th Street in Manhattan, Landfield would visit the galleries and museums almost on a daily basis. He studied composition, illustration and design at Art and Design and graduated in June 1963. He was then accepted to the Cooper Union, Pratt Institute, and the Kansas City Art Institute where he was given a full scholarship. Landfield studied at the Kansas City Art Institute, the San Francisco Art Institute and The Art Students League in New York. He began exhibiting his work in New York City in 1962 at the Rodale Theater on E.
