John Lennon – Steel and Glass - Walls And Bridges ‘74 Much like “How Do You Sleep” three years earlier, this is another blistering Lennon track that sets its sights on Allen Klein (who had contributed lyrics to “How Do You Sleep” those few years before). The Beatles - Revolution 1 - The Beatles 2 The first song recorded during the sessions for the “White Album.” At the time of its recording, this slower version was the only version of John Lennon’s “Revolution,” and it carried that titled without a “1” or a “9” in the title. Recording began on May 30, 1968, and 18 takes were recorded. On the final take, the first with a lead vocal, the song continued past the 4 1/2 minute mark and went onto an extended jam. It would end at 10:17 with John shouting to the others and to the control room “OK, I’ve had enough!” The final six minutes were pure chaos with discordant instrumental jamming, plenty of feedback, percussive clicks (which are heard in the song’s introduction as well), and John repeatedly screaming “alright” and moaning along with his girlfriend, Yoko Ono. Ono also spoke random streams of consciousness on the track such as “if you become naked.” This bizarre six-minute section was clipped off the version of what would become “Revolution 1” to form the basis of “Revolution 9.” Yoko’s “naked” line appears in the released version of “Revolution 9” at 7:53. -

Dreller Curtained Walls: Architectural Photography, the Farnsworth House, and the Opaque Discourse of Transparency Abstract This paper studies the creation, circulation, and reception of two groups of photographs of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s iconic Farnsworth House, both taken by Hedrich Blessing. The first set, produced for a 1951 Architectural Forum magazine cover story, features curtains carefully arranged according to the architect’s preferences; the Museum of Modern Art commis- sioned the second set in 1985 for a major Mies retrospective exhibition specifically because the show’s influential curator, Arthur Drexler, believed the curtains obscured Mies’ so-called “glass box” design. -

September 2009 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Introducing Our New Devotion House Curator/Caretakers Camille Arbogast & Jesus MacLean are very excited to begin working & living at the Devotion House as co-curators & caretakers. Camille is a Lead Guide for Historic New England at the 1796 Otis House. She's worked for Gore Place in Waltham, the Newton Historical Society, and the Browne House in Watertown. She wrote and leads walking tours of the old Norumbega Amusement park in Newton, performs occasionally as Mary Stone-- an 1806 maid-- and lectures on architect/designer Ogden Codman, Jr. She loves history-- and sharing what she's passionate about with others. She looks forward to caring for the collection at the Devotion House, increasing visitation, and helping with the Society's programs. Jesus, raised in Brookline, is also a Lead Guide for Historic New England-- he works at the 1937 Walter Gropius House in Lincoln. He also assists at the Browne House in Watertown and the Codman Estate in Lincoln. He is passionate about libraries and information, and looks forward to continuing to catalogue the collection at the Devotion House, as well as assisting with cataloguing the Brookline Historical Society's archives. He worked with Political Research Associates in Somerville as a library intern last winter and spring. He is also an architectural history buff and thrilled to be living in an 1740s house. He has already started helping board members Jean Stringham and Holly Hartman work in the yard at the Devotion House, as gardening is another one of his interests. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Historical Society September/October Open Houses The Edward Devotion House will be open for tours from noon to 3 pm on the following Sundays this fall: September 21st, October 5th, and October 19th. -

From theicoment it was completed in I950, admirers of the emerging new archi tecture hailed it as a revolutionary masterpiece. In the years since then the Villa Savoye has become world famous — a classic that can be compared with the most brilliant achievements of the past. It demonstrates perfectly Le Corbusier's theories of design and planning^ but it is more than a demonstration: it is a unique and glorious work of art. That is why its slow destruction through neglect is scandalous. During World War II the Villa Savoye was occupied successively by German and American forces. When the Germans left they poured concrete down the toilets; when the Americans arrived they shot bullets through the windows. Mme. Savoye, widowed and impoverished by the war, moved to a nearby farm. But she refused to sell the house because she hoped her grandson would one day be able to restore it. Mieanwhile the quiet village of Poissy was linked to Paris by a super highway. It is now a crowded suburb. For many years Vtae, Savoye farmed the land, using the building as a barn. Although it was closed to the public, visitors who were able to get in picked their way over potatoes and hay, admiring an architectural composition so powerful and subtle that it could survive all indignities. -

Villa Savoye Poissy, France [ The house will stand in the midst of the fields like an object, without disturbing anything around it. ] Le Corbusier Villa Savoye Lying on the outskirts of Paris, France, and completed in 1931, Villa Savoye was designed as a private country house by the Swiss-born architect, Le Corbusier. It quickly became one of the most influential buildings in the International style of architecture and cemented Le Corbusier’s reputation as one of the most important architects of the 20th century. Architectural significance When the construction of Villa Savoye began in 1928, Le Corbusier was already an internationally known architect. His book Vers une Architecture (Towards a New Architecture) had been translated into several languages, while his work on the Centrosoyuz Building in Moscow, Russia, had brought him into contact with the Russian avant-garde. As one of the first members of the Congrès International d’Architecture Moderne (CIAM), he was also becoming known as an important and vocal champion of modern architecture. Villa Savoye would be the last in a series of white ‘Purist villas’ designed and © Fondation Le Corbusier constructed by Le Corbusier and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret in and around the city of Paris during the 1920s.
