Grange-Over-Sands Branch Is Closing on Wednesday 1 May 2019 This branch is closing – but we're still here to help Our Grange-over-Sands branch is closing on Wednesday 1 May 2019 Reasons for closure, and alternative ways to bank This branch is closing – but your bank is always open This first booklet will help you understand why we’ve made the decision to close this branch. It also sets out the banking services and support that will be available to you after this branch has closed. In a second booklet, which will be available from the branch prior to it closing or online at home.barclays/ukbranchclosures, we'll share concerns and feedback from the local community. We'll also detail how we are helping people transition from using the branch with alternative ways to carry out their banking requirements. Here are the main reasons why the Grange-over-Sands branch is closing: • The number of transactions has gone down in the previous 24 months, and additionally 77% of our branch customers also use other ways to do their banking such as online and by telephone. • Customers using other ways to do their banking has increased by 20% since 2012. • In the past 12 months, 49% of this branch's customers have been using neighbouring branches. • We've identified that only 51 customers use this branch exclusively for their banking Proposals to close any branch are made by the Barclays local leadership teams and verified at a national level ahead of any closure announcement. If you have any questions and concerns about these changes then please feel free to get in touch with Kay Eccles, your Community Banking Director for Cumbria & Lancashire. We consider how many customers have been visiting, what kind of transactions they've been making, and all the other ways they've been choosing to bank with us. We also take into consideration the availability of other branches in the wider community. • The Seaside Resorts of Westmorland and Lancashire North of the Sands in the Nineteenth Century
THE SEASIDE RESORTS OF WESTMORLAND AND LANCASHIRE NORTH OF THE SANDS IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY BY ALAN HARRIS, M.A., PH.D. READ 19 APRIL 1962 HIS paper is concerned with the development of a group of Tseaside resorts situated along the northern and north-eastern sides of Morecambe Bay. Grange-over-Sands, with a population in 1961 of 3,117, is the largest member of the group. The others are villages, whose relatively small resident population is augmented by visitors during the summer months. Although several of these villages have grown considerably in recent years, none has yet attained a population of more than approxi mately 1,600. Walney Island is, of course, exceptional. Since the suburbs of Barrow invaded the island, its population has risen to almost 10,000. Though small, the resorts have an interesting history. All were affected, though not to the same extent, by the construction of railways after 1846, and in all of them the legacy of the nineteenth century is still very much in evidence. There are, however, some visible remains and much documentary evidence of an older phase of resort development, which preceded by several decades the construction of the local railways. This earlier phase was important in a number of ways. It initiated changes in what were then small communities of farmers, wood-workers and fishermen, and by the early years of the nineteenth century old cottages and farmsteads were already being modified to cater for the needs of summer visitors. During the early phase of development a handful of old villages and hamlets became known to a select few.

  • A History of Kents Bank
A History of Kents Bank. Kents Bank lies to the west of Grange over Sands and until the middle of the 19th century it comprised a few buildings on the shore where the cross bay route across Morecambe Bay met the land. Abbot Hall and Kents Bank House, then known as Kents Bank Hotel which was operating as a lodging house, stood on opposite sides of the road at the base of the hill now known as Kirkhead Road. A railway station had opened in August 1857 on the "Ulverstone to Lancaster" railway running along the edge of the shore. Part way up the hill on Kirkhead Road was Laneside Farm. Further along the coast, towards Grange, Guides Farm sat on the shore at the bottom of the road now known as Carter Road. Seawood House was above Guide Farm at the top of the steep hill with access from Carter Road. The two roads climbed northwards up the hill to join the main road linking Grange with Flookburgh. Kentsford Road, the connecting road between Kirkhead Road and Carter Road, did not exist. The land between Kirkhead Road, Carter Road and Allithwaite Road was farmland. Mary Lambert – Landowner. Mary Winfield Lambert owned all the land and buildings around Kirkhead Road including Laneside Farm which was the base for the agricultural operations on the land in Kents Bank. On her death in 1857 Mary Winfield Lambert lived at Boarbank House, Allithwaite. Miss Lambert’s estate stretching from Boarbank Hall in Allithwaite to Abbot Hall in Kents Bank was sold by auction in August 1858 to ‘capitalists from Manchester, Bury and Whitehaven’ (Westmorland Gazette Aug 28 1858).

It makes free-standing statutory proposals for this part of the stretch, and seeks approval for them by the Secretary of State in their own right under section 52 of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949. 6.1.3 The report explains how we propose to implement the England Coast Path (“the trail”) on this part of the stretch, and details the likely consequences in terms of the wider ‘Coastal Margin’ that will be created if our proposals are approved by the Secretary of State. Our report also sets out: any proposals we think are necessary for restricting or excluding coastal access rights to address particular issues, in line with the powers in the legislation; and any proposed powers for the trail to be capable of being relocated on particular sections (“roll-back”), if this proves necessary in the future because of coastal change.
