SPORTS & ESPORTS THE COMPETITIVE DREAM TEAM JULIANA KORANTENG Editor-in-Chief/Founder MediaTainment Finance (UK) SPORTS & ESPORTS: THE COMPETITIVE DREAM TEAM 1.THE CROSSOVER: WHAT TRADITIONAL SPORTS CAN BRING TO ESPORTS Professional football, soccer, baseball and motor racing have endless decades worth of experience in professionalising, commercialising and monetising sporting activities. In fact, professional-services powerhouse KPMG estimates that the business of traditional sports, including commercial and amateur events, related media as well as education, academic, grassroots and other ancillary activities, is a US$700bn international juggernaut. Furthermore, the potential crossover with esports makes sense. A host of popular video games have traditional sports for themes. Soccer-centric games include EA’s FIFA series and Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer. NBA 2K, a series of basketball simulation games published by a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive, influenced the formation of the groundbreaking NBA 2K League in professional esports. EA is also behind the Madden NFL series plus the NHL, NBA, FIFA and UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) games franchises. Motor racing has influenced the narratives in Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto, Gran Turismo from Sony Interactive Entertainment, while Psyonix’s Rocket League melds soccer and motor racing. SPORTS & ESPORTS THE COMPETITIVE DREAM TEAM SPORTS & ESPORTS: THE COMPETITIVE DREAM TEAM In some ways, it isn’t too much of a stretch to see why traditional sports should appeal to the competitive streaks in gamers. Not all those games, several of which are enjoyed by solitary players, might necessarily translate well into the head-to-head combat formats associated with esports and its millions of live-venue and online spectators.

Table of contents Foreword - Jean Brihault 3 Media Contacts 4 Playing System Diagrams 5 Berlin To Host 2014 EHF Cup Finals 7 HCM Constanta vs Lugi HF 8 Sporting CP vs Pick Szeged 15 HBC Nantes vs Montpellier Agglomeration HB 22 Top Scorers of the Competition 29 Past Winners 30 2 Foreword Dear Media Representative, Welcome to the Men‘s EHF Cup Quarter-finals and to the competition‘s official Media Guide. With the 2013/14 Men’s EHF Cup rapidly approaching the end of its season, we look forward to the Quarter-final phase of the competition. With the current titleholder, Rhein Neckar Löwen playing in handball’s elite men’s club competition, the EHF Cup is ready for a new champion! Will the trophy remain in Germany? Does a new home wait in France, Portugal, Hungary, Romania, or Sweden? To the arenas, on behalf of the European Handball Federation, I welcome the delegations from Montpellier Agglomeration HB, HBC Nantes, Pick Szeged, Sporting CP, HCM Constanta, and Lugi HF. Having recently concluded the gruelling Group Phase, the teams showed athletic prowess to move forward to this next round, as many high quality teams fell by the wayside. This latest heat is the definitive encounter; for the teams second place is not an option. Clearly inevitable, three teams will exit the competition, as three teams step triumphantly towards Berlin, and the 2014 Men’s EHF Cup Finals. From 19 – 21 April, the 1st Leg matches of the pairings will commence, as the teams vie for the initial advantage; the return matches are scheduled to play across two days just one week later on 26 – 27 April 2014.

  • The Paradox of the Portuguese Game: the Omnipresence of Football and the Absence of Spectators at Matches to Joao Nuno Coelho and Nina Clara Tiesler
FSAS_A_243975 .fm Page 578 Thursday, July 12, 2007 9 :38 PM • Soccer and Society Routledge Vol. 8, No . 4, Month 2007, pp. 578-600 R Taylor 6 Franco Group The Paradox of the Portuguese Game: The Omnipresence of Football and the Absence of Spectators at Matches to Joao Nuno Coelho and Nina Clara Tiesler Without doubt, football is omnipresent in the Portuguese public (and private) sphere. Some speak about the footballizaton of Portuguese society', and criticize the hegemony of football in Portuguese culture, along with it the close (and sometimes dangerous) connec- tions between football and politics . What is so interesting about this phenomenon is that it is juxtaposed with other facts, such as stadium attendance being surprisingly low. The essay brings to the forefront the particularities of the Portuguese football social formation case by taking these two current realities as a point of departure . In analysing stadium attendance over three decades against specific historical backgrounds, the authors present six different factors which explain the paradox and come to the conclusion that both realities are not contradictory – but partly determining each other. Someone was saying yesterday that Norway is the top-ranking country in human development; ( .. .) that it's a fantastic country and so on and so on ( .. .) But here's back at them . Portugal is at the top of its group and all it needs is a draw to qualify 30 for the World Cup while Norway is five points behind the leader of its group! ( .. .) Ha ha ha! [ l ] Introduction Although Portuguese football is reasonably well-known to international football fans, at least since Benfica and the national team of Eusebio & Co ., the general idea abroad that Portugal is a `football country' is much more recent (Euro 2004).
