With the 2013/14 Men’s EHF Cup rapidly approaching the end of its season, we look forward to the Quarter-final phase of the competition. With the current titleholder, Rhein Neckar Löwen playing in handball’s elite men’s club competition, the EHF Cup is ready for a new champion! Will the trophy remain in Germany? Does a new home wait in France, Portugal, Hungary, Romania, or Sweden? To the arenas, on behalf of the European Handball Federation, I welcome the delegations from Montpellier Agglomeration HB, HBC Nantes, Pick Szeged, Sporting CP, HCM Constanta, and Lugi HF. Having recently concluded the gruelling Group Phase, the teams showed athletic prowess to move forward to this next round, as many high quality teams fell by the wayside. This latest heat is the definitive encounter; for the teams second place is not an option. Clearly inevitable, three teams will exit the competition, as three teams step triumphantly towards Berlin, and the 2014 Men’s EHF Cup Finals. From 19 – 21 April, the 1st Leg matches of the pairings will commence, as the teams vie for the initial advantage; the return matches are scheduled to play across two days just one week later on 26 – 27 April 2014. We pride ourselves on our positive and cooperative relationship with the press and media and I am sure this will continue and develop in the future. Should you require any information, help or assistance during the course of the season, your first point of contact is the EHF Media and Communications Department based in our office in Vienna. They will be more than happy to assist you with any questions you might have. We look forward to working with you! Media Guide VELUX EHF Champions League Season 2012/2013 Group Phase Group B TABLE OF CONTENTS GROUP B – expert´s view 3 THW Kiel 4 BM Atlético de Madrid 7 MKB Veszprém KC 10 IK Sävehof 13 RK Celje Pivovarna Laško 16 HCM Constanta 19 Schedule of matches 22 2 TEAMS: 1. THW Kiel 2. MKB Veszprém KC 3. BM Atlético Madrid 4. IK Sävehof 5. Celje Pivovarna Laško 6. HCM Constanta Expert Francois-Xavier Houlet says: What a group this is! Kiel, Madrid (formerly known as Ciudad Real) and Celje have won seven of the last nine Champions League titles! Furthermore, Kiel and Madrid are last year#s finalists. And despite many changes in their respective rosters, both “giants” belong to the top favourites. Kiel’s main challenge is the integration of five new players into the team. Especially, new top- shooter Marko Vujin faces the very difficult task to follow the big footsteps that Kim Andersson left. Atlético Madrid had to cope with the departures of, among others, Dinart, Strbik, Chema or Abalo. But after having signed Barrachet, Gojun and Superstar Balić there is no doubt that Madrid will continue to be one of the top teams. Veszprém are for many people the dark horse that could surprise the favourites. With Ugalde, Chema Rodriguez or coach Ortega speaks, the Hungarian champion now plays with a Spanish accent. I believe, this bunch of players can go very far in the competition. Celje, Sävehof and Constanta will likely compete for fourth place in Group B. Celje and Constanta have signed some strong players and can rely on their home crowd support, which is why it will be difficult for Sävehof to repeat last season’s feat when they won the qualification tournament and then finished third place in the group.

SPORTS & ESPORTS THE COMPETITIVE DREAM TEAM JULIANA KORANTENG Editor-in-Chief/Founder MediaTainment Finance (UK) SPORTS & ESPORTS: THE COMPETITIVE DREAM TEAM 1.THE CROSSOVER: WHAT TRADITIONAL SPORTS CAN BRING TO ESPORTS Professional football, soccer, baseball and motor racing have endless decades worth of experience in professionalising, commercialising and monetising sporting activities. In fact, professional-services powerhouse KPMG estimates that the business of traditional sports, including commercial and amateur events, related media as well as education, academic, grassroots and other ancillary activities, is a US$700bn international juggernaut. Furthermore, the potential crossover with esports makes sense. A host of popular video games have traditional sports for themes. Soccer-centric games include EA’s FIFA series and Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer. NBA 2K, a series of basketball simulation games published by a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive, influenced the formation of the groundbreaking NBA 2K League in professional esports. EA is also behind the Madden NFL series plus the NHL, NBA, FIFA and UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) games franchises. Motor racing has influenced the narratives in Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto, Gran Turismo from Sony Interactive Entertainment, while Psyonix’s Rocket League melds soccer and motor racing. SPORTS & ESPORTS THE COMPETITIVE DREAM TEAM SPORTS & ESPORTS: THE COMPETITIVE DREAM TEAM In some ways, it isn’t too much of a stretch to see why traditional sports should appeal to the competitive streaks in gamers. Not all those games, several of which are enjoyed by solitary players, might necessarily translate well into the head-to-head combat formats associated with esports and its millions of live-venue and online spectators.

Only the top fourteen teams have survived the exciting group phase marathon which was played for the first time with 28 teams on the starting grid. And before we set our sights towards the upcoming playoff matches let me just underline that the many thrilling matches between even opponents in the group phase has certainly justified our move to revitalise this stage of the competition. The two clubs who won the Group A and B have also benefitted from another change in the playing system as Paris Saint-Germain Handball and FC Barcelona Lassa qualified directly to the quarter-finals and can now enjoy a welcome break in the busy season, while their future quarter-final opponents will have to overcome the Last 16 hurdles.
