To do so in the course of one paper is even more demanding, if not daunting. Not only does "the liberation struggle" in South Africa in its broadest sense span more than a century. It also saw the coming and going of movements, the merging and evolving of others and a series of principled and/or pragmatic pacts in the process. The author is attempting here to provide a rather descriptive (and as far as possible, chronological) look at and rudimentary outline to the main organisational levels of liberation in South Africa since roughly the 1870' s. I will draw on my own 2 work in the field lover the past fifteen years as well as other sources • A wide variety of sources and personal experiences inform this contribution, even if they are not mentioned here. Also needless to say, one's own subjectivities may arise - even if an attempt is made towards intersubjecti vity. 1 WELCOMING REMARKS BY DR NALEDI PANDOR, MINISTER OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND COOPERATION, DURING VIRTUAL THE PROGRAMME FOR INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPME IN AFRICA (PIDA) WEEK 2020: 19 JANUARY 2021 Programme Director; Your Excellencies; Ladies and Gentlemen: Compliments of the new season to you all! I would also like to welcome you to PIDA week 2020. We are brought together today by commitment to our shared vision for a prosperous Africa and a better world. We meet at a time of great distress both for the African continent and the entire world. As PIDA 2020 shows, the Covid-19 global pandemic has at once disrupted and transformed the way we do business and how we interact with one another. Nevertheless, it is necessary to meet to continue determining plans to help us achieve progress and to avoid further decline in our socio-economic conditions. Your Excellencies; The Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA) was created as a framework for stakeholders in the continent to utilise and develop the infrastructure necessary for tangible growth and to integrate the continent physically, economically and socially, with the objective of boosting trade, creating new jobs for Africa’s growing population and improving the overall socio-economic conditions of our people. 2 PIDA was also designed to mobilise resources to transform our infrastructure as well as modernise it in order to integrate the African continent and the world. Achieving these goals can only be done through our collective effort as Member States effectively using our existing frameworks of regional and continental cooperation. A great deal of progress is being recorded in PIDA implementation, and AUDA-NEPAD remains pivotal in this exercise we are not at the required level of implementation and governments and the AU need to give greater support to active implementation. -

In this dissertation, I study the growth in support for the Democratic Alliance (DA) party, which is the largest opposition party in South Africa. South Africa is a case of democratic dominant party rule, a party system in which fair but uncompetitive elections are held. I argue that opposition party growth in dominant party systems is explained by the strategies that opposition parties adopt in local government and the factors that shape political competition in local politics. I argue that opposition parties can use time spent in local government to expand beyond their base by delivering services effectively and outperforming the ruling party. I also argue that performance in subnational political office helps opposition parties build a reputation for good governance, which is appealing to ruling party ii. supporters who are looking for an alternative. Finally, I argue that opposition parties use candidate nominations for local elections as a means to appeal to constituents that are vital to the ruling party’s coalition. -

FACEBOOK, YOUTH AND POLITICAL ACTION: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ZIMBABWE AND SOUTH AFRICA A thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY of SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM AND MEDIA STUDIES, RHODES UNIVERSITY by Admire Mare September 2015 ABSTRACT This comparative multi-sited study examines how, why and when politically engaged youths in distinctive national and social movement contexts use Facebook to facilitate political activism. As part of the research objectives, this study is concerned with investigating how and why youth activists in Zimbabwe and South Africa use the popular corporate social network site for political purposes. The study explores the discursive interactions and micro- politics of participation which plays out on selected Facebook groups and pages. It also examines the extent to which the selected Facebook pages and groups can be considered as alternative spaces for political activism. It also documents and analyses the various kinds of political discourses (described here as digital hidden transcripts) which are circulated by Zimbabwean and South African youth activists on Facebook fan pages and groups. Methodologically, this study adopts a predominantly qualitative research design although it also draws on quantitative data in terms of levels of interaction on Facebook groups and pages. Consequently, this study engages in data triangulation which allows me to make sense of how and why politically engaged youths from a range of six social movements in Zimbabwe and South Africa use Facebook for political action. In terms of data collection techniques, the study deploys social media ethnography (online participant observation), qualitative content analysis and in-depth interviews. -

The Democratic Alliance now holds power in the administrative capital of SA, Tshwane; in the economic capital, Johannesburg; in the parliamentary capital, Cape Town, and in other key urban hubs such as Nelson Mandela Bay in the Eastern Cape and in Mogale City in Gauteng. The mighty ANC, after just 22 years in power, is now a rural party, led by a traditionalist chauvinist, while its support among the educated black and white elite ebbs away. Herman Mashaba = a black former salesman turned millionaire from Hammanskraal, one of the poorest places on earth = is now Mayor of Johannesburg, unseating the liberation movement, the ANC. It represents a major mindshift in SA politics. A real change has begun. The recent local government elections mark a significant turning point in South Africa’s history. For the first time since 1994, political and economic power has shifted in major metropolitan areas from the ANC to opposition coalitions. Real and necessary competition has entered SA politics. This is a powerful and positive development: the narrative of a liberation movement that stays in power too long without challenge, as happened in Zimbabwe for example, has been broken. The 2019 elections are likely to cement this trajectory, meaning that South Africa will become a normal, multi=party, noisy democracy where power is contested, won and lost within the next ten years. -
