Received reports from first reviewer (23 August), second and third reviewers (15,18 December). Received revised draft 28 December. Accepted to publish 28 December 2018. Abstract The initiative of integrating science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in educational curriculum in schools is one of the efforts by the Ministry of Education Malaysia to encourage students’ interest and involvement in STEM. One of the fundamental keys 21st century pedagogical approach to effective learning, meaningful learning and deep understanding of knowledge is the integration of STEM in school lessons. • Class and Politics in Malaysian and Singaporean Nation Building
CLASS AND POLITICS IN MALAYSIAN AND SINGAPOREAN NATION BUILDING Muhamad Nadzri Mohamed Noor, M.A. Political Science College of Business, Government and Law Flinders University Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2017 Page Left Deliberately Blank. Abstract This study endeavours to deliver an alternative account of the study of nation-building by examining the subject matter eclectically from diverse standpoints, predominantly that of class in Southeast Asia which is profoundly dominated by ‘cultural’ perspectives. Two states in the region, Malaysia and Singapore, have been selected to comprehend and appreciate the nature of nation-building in these territories. The nation-building processes in both of the countries have not only revolved around the national question pertaining to the dynamic relations between the states and the cultural contents of the racial or ethnic communities in Malaysia and Singapore; it is also surrounded, as this thesis contends, by the question of class - particularly the relations between the new capitalist states’ elites (the rulers) and their masses (the ruled). More distinctively this thesis perceives nation-building as a project by political elites for a variety of purposes, including elite entrenchment, class (re)production and regime perpetuation. The project has more to do with ‘class-(re)building’ and ‘subject- building’ rather than ‘nation-building’. Although this thesis does not eliminate the significance of culture in the nation-building process in both countries; it is explicated that cultures were and are heavily employed to suit the ruling class’s purpose. Hence, the cultural dimension shall be used eclectically with other perspectives.

  • Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah (SAS) Putrajaya Teachers’ Paving the Way Forward SAS Putrajaya Boys’ Treated to a Design Thinking and Smartbite Malaysia Feast
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah (SAS) Putrajaya Teachers’ Paving the Way Forward SAS Putrajaya boys’ Treated to a Design Thinking and Smartbite Malaysia Feast 26 June 2019, Kuala Lumpur – Ever imagined the prowess of Design Thinking in the realm of our public school classrooms? Two teachers from the Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah Putrajaya full-fledged boy’s boarding school who were d.school Malaysia’s Design Thinking alumni envisioned exactly this and thus embarked their students on a half-day, brief yet power-packed Design Thinking journey. The half-day Design Thinking session brought the Form 2 and Form 4 boys to experience learning in a design thinking context. To realise this, coaches of d.school Malaysia crafted challenges that required design thinking, problem-solving and collaboration skills specially designed for these students. Their teacher, Cikgu Nik Anita Hamid, an English Language Teacher and Secretary of SGE Programmes opined that ,Design thinking in the classroom is all about evolving collaborative skills and creativity while challenging the boys’ autonomous thinking which they are ordinarily not accustomed to. Hence, technology elevates the synergy that design thinking generates, making the solutions both timely and effective. “Should you want your students to feel that their ideas are valuable and what they learning is essential, it’s time to depart from antiquated teaching approaches and hop on how to work in vibrant teams that may formulate unconventional approaches to challenges they face in their communitites – be it that community is their classroom, the field, the school or beyond” , she added. These teachers use design thinking strategies combined with technology to help their students find realistic solutions for community challenges.

  • Malaysia's Gallant School System in Need of an Overhaul1
ISSUE: 2016 No. 60 ISSN 2335-6677 RESEARCHERS AT ISEAS – YUSOF ISHAK INSTITUTE ANALYSE CURRENT EVENTS Singapore | 27 October 2016 Malaysia’s Gallant School System in Need of an Overhaul1 Lee Hock Guan* EXECUTIVE SUMMARY . A much-needed debate on the strengths and weaknesses of its education system has recently been ignited in Malaysia. This article discusses some key factors involved in the evolution of the country’s school system. In concise terms, Malaysia practises a transition bilingual model. All its primary schools teach the same syllabus and its vernacular schools instruct in Chinese or Tamil medium before transiting to a Malay-medium secondary school system. The establishment of exclusive schools for Malay high achievers crucially contributed to the decline of the former premier English schools. Previously, these latter schools enrolled high achievers from all ethnic groups which contributed to facilitating interaction between ethnic elites. Instead of being a hindrance to national integration, vernacular schools in effect promoted a multicultural Malaysian identity and can today potentially enhance opportunities for Malaysians in the global economy. In fact, with many across all ethnic groups demanding it, there is also good reason to reinstall the English stream. Policies and programmes that have contributed to ethnic segregation in schools; the falling quality standards of education; the parochial nationalism and the Islamisation of national schools; and the mono-ethnic staffing are in need of revision and overhaul. * Lee Hock Guan is Senior Fellow at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute, where he is co- coordinator of the Malaysia Studies Programme. 1 The focus of this paper is mostly on peninsular Malaysia.
