Many marine organisms exhibit lunar rhythms in reproductive behaviour and some show experimental evidence of endogenous control by a circalunar clock, the molecular and genetic basis of which is unexplored. We examined the genetic control of lunar and diurnal rhythmicity in the marine midge Clunio marinus (Chironomidae, Diptera), a species for which the correct timing of adult emergence is critical in natural populations. Results: We crossed two strains of Clunio marinus that differ in the timing of the diurnal and lunar rhythms of emergence. The phenotype distribution of the segregating backcross progeny indicates polygenic control of the lunar emergence rhythm. Diurnal timing of emergence is also under genetic control, and is influenced by two unlinked genes with major effects. Furthermore, the lunar and diurnal timing of emergence is correlated in the backcross generation. We show that both the lunar emergence time and its correlation to the diurnal emergence time are adaptive for the species in its natural environment. Conclusions: The correlation implies that the unlinked genes affecting lunar timing and the two unlinked genes affecting diurnal timing could be the same, providing an unexpectedly close interaction of the two clocks. -

ERETMOPTERA MURPHYI SCHAEFFER (DIPTERA: CHIRONOMJDAE), AN APPARENTLY PARTHENOGENETIC ANTARCTIC MIDGE P. S. CRANSTON Entomology Department, British Museum (Natural History), Cromwell Road, London SWl SBD ABSTRACT. Chironomid midges are amongst the most abundant and diverse holo metabolous insects of the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic. Eretmoptera murphyi Schaeffer, 1914, has been enigmatic to systematists since the first discovery of adult females on South Georgia. The rediscovery of the species as a suspected introduction to Signy Island (South Orkney Islands) allows the description of the immature stages for the first time and the redescription of the female, the only sex known. E. murphyi larvae are terrestrial, living in damp moss and peat, and the brachypterous adult is probably parthenogenetic. Eretmoptera appears to have an isolated position amongst the terrestrial Orthocladiinae: the close relationship with the marine Clunio group of genera suggested by previous workers is not supported. INTRODUCTION In the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions, the Chironomidae (non-biting midges) are the commonest, most diverse and most widely distributed group ofhoi ometa bolo us insects. For example, Belgica antarctica Jacobs is the most southerly distributed free-living insect (Wirth and Gressitt, 1967; Usher and Edwards, 1984) and the podonomine genus Parochlus is found throughout the sub-Antarctic islands. Recently, Sublette and Wirth (1980) reported 22 species in 18 genera belonging to 6 subfamilies of Chironomidae from New Zealand's sub-Antarctic islands. One sub-Antarctic midge that has remained rather enigmatic since its discovery is Eretmoptera murphyi. Two females of this brachypterous chironomid were collected by R. C. Murphy from South Georgia in 1913 and described, together with other insects, by Schaeffer (1914). -

This was true also for the host, Prof. Lars Brundin, and his wife and CO-tqorlcers. Abisko is in Lapland, near the 68th degree of latitude and not far from the Norwegian and Finnish borders, about 1000 km north from Stockholm. It is only a railway station on the Kiruna-Narvik ore line, and cannot at present be reached by road. However, the settlement has achieved a reputation through the Natural Sciences Research Station established there by the Royal Swedish Academy of Science, and through the tourist hotel which is popular among hikers and winter sportsmen. Both station and hotel lie in the northern birch forest region not far from Torne Trask, the largest lake in Lapland. There is easy access from here to the mountainsus natural landscape of Lapland, which rapidly puts nature-lovers under its spell. Linne and Zetter- stedt have already described it in these terms. When Sven Ekman led his ex- cursions in the Abisko region at the turn of the century, he had to become accustomed to CO-existence with brown bears, which ?.?ere then very numerous. The first entry in the station visitors' book from the foundation year (1927) is that of a student, Lars Brundin by name, who had travelled to the north to collect beetles. -

Insects are now regarded as comprising only those hexapods with 11 abdominal segments. Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000). -

SGMA seeks to achieve sustainability, which is defined as the absence of several undesirable results, including “depletions of interconnected surface water that have significant and unreasonable adverse impacts on beneficial users of surface water” (Water Code §10721). The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a science-based, nonprofit organization with a mission to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. Like humans, plants and animals often rely on groundwater for survival, which is why TNC helped develop, and is now helping to implement, SGMA. Earlier this year, we launched the Groundwater Resource Hub, which is an online resource intended to help make it easier and cheaper to address environmental requirements under SGMA. As a first step in addressing when depletions might have an adverse impact, The Nature Conservancy recommends identifying the beneficial users of surface water, which include environmental users. This is a critical step, as it is impossible to define “significant and unreasonable adverse impacts” without knowing what is being impacted. To make this easy, we are providing this letter and the accompanying documents as the best available science on the freshwater species within the boundary of your groundwater sustainability agency (GSA). -

All other opinions and views given are my own. 3 Abstract Research on resource transfer across ecosystem boundaries (i.e. allochthonous material; a subsidy) has been recognised since the 1920s and recognition of allochthonous inputs has been a part of food web theory since its inception. Nonetheless, only in recent decades have subsidies between ecosystems become a feature of large scale food web studies. Measures of subsidy links are usually restricted to studies on either marine or freshwater, the latter being the focus of most attention. In a recent meta-analysis of cross ecosystem boundary subsidies, two thirds of the 32 data sets used focused on freshwater ecosystems and one third on marine; none involved saline lakes. As a percentage of total global water volume saline lakes are almost equal to that of freshwater, yet there is a paucity of research carried out on linkage between saline lakes and their catchments. -

Email: [email protected] Abstract. Citizen science initiatives and the data they produce are increasingly common in ecology, conservation and biodiversity monitoring. Although the quality of citizen science data has historically been questioned, biases can be detected and corrected for, allowing these data to become comparable in quality to professionally collected data. Consequently, citizen science is increasingly being integrated with professional science, allowing the collection of data at unprecedented spatial and temporal scales. iNaturalist is one of the most popular biodiversity citizen science platforms globally, with more than 1.4 million users having contributed over 54 million observations. Australia is the top contributing nation in the southern hemisphere, and in the top four contributing nations globally, with over 1.6 million observations of over 36 000 identified species contributed by almost 27 000 users. Despite the platform’s success, there are few holistic syntheses of contributions to iNaturalist, especially for Australia. Here, we outline the history of iNaturalist from an Australian perspective, and summarise, taxonomically, temporally and spatially, Australian biodiversity data contributed to the platform.
