Tulinius September 2014 1 Abstract Eyrbyggja saga is thought to have been written at the monastery that was located at Helgafell on the south side of Breiðafjörður during the 13th century. Many have considered the saga to have had relatively little Christian influence due to its vivid descriptions of what is purported to be heathen objects and customs within the saga. Recent research has turned this view on its head, leading scholars to ponder where heathen influence ends and Christian begins. It is the purpose of this thesis to explore the idea that a Christian cleric modelled the saga based on the oral sources that he had at his disposal, weaving these sources together to suit his own aims. Rather than searching for the pagan and the Christian elements explicitly, the text will be inspected for one particular aspect of Latin education, well known to have been taught all over Europe at the time the saga is purported to have been written. This aspect is a part of the trivium of Latin learning, known as dialectic. The implications of this type of education is first inspected, then a text available and extremely popular during the time is consulted for an understanding of the content of this education, Boethius’ De topicis differentiis. Finally this understanding is applied to a portion of the text of Eyrbyggja saga with the express goal of looking at the text from a similar lens as that of the Christian cleric that may have written it. 2 Ágrip Talið er að Eyrbyggja saga hafi verið rituð á 13. öld í klaustrinu að Helgafelli við sunnanverðan Breiðafjörðinn. Mörgum hefur sýnst að sagan beri fá merki um kristileg áhrif, ekki síst vegna eftirminnilegra lýsinga á heiðnum siðum og gripum. Nýlegar rannsóknir hafa snúið þessum viðhorfum á hvolf og nú velta menn því fyrir sér hvar mörk kristinna og heiðinna áhrifa liggja í sögunni. Í þessari ritgerð verður sagan skoðuð út frá þeirri megin hugmynd að þar hafi klerkur verið að verki, en að hann hafi unnið á sinn sérstaka hátt úr miklu safni munnlegra heimilda. Úr þeim hafi hann ofið söguna með ákveðinn tilgang í huga. Í stað þess að greina í sundur hina kristnu og heiðnu þætti úr þessum heimildum, verður hugað að því hvernig höfundur stundar sinn vefnað með hliðsjón af útbreiddri hugsunartækni sem kennd var í skólum og tilheyrði Latínulærdómi, nánar tiltekið þríveginum (trivium). Þetta var þrætubókin (dialectic). Fyrst er fjallað um hvað menntun á borð við þessa hafði í för með sér en síðan er litið sérstaklega á útbreiddan texta á þessum tímum, De topicis differentiis eftir Boethius til að auka skilninginn á þessari tegund menntunar. However, it is the position of this thesis that the scribe had to have been in the ranks of the clergy in order to weave such a complicated tale together. Without the education of the cleric in legal matters, rhetoric, and dialectical discourse, the saga would not have become what it is. Nothing we argue for here in this context rules out the use of oral material, it is rather that the material at hand for the scribe was woven together in its current form using a learned art common throughout Europe at the time of writing. This thesis concerns itself especially with one aspect of Medieval Latin education contemporary with the writing of the Eyrbyggja saga. Dialectic was the instructed form of logic that complemented rhetoric and grammar in the trivium of Latin education at the

    CHAPTER THREE MEDIEVAL HISTORY: THE SCHOLASTIC PERIOD Beatus Rhenanus, a close friend of Erasmus and the most famous humanist historian of Germany, dated the rise of scholasticism (and hence the decay of theology) at “around the year of grace 1140”, when men like Peter Lombard (1095/1100–1160), Peter Abelard (1079–1142), and Gratian († c. 1150) were active.1 Erasmus, who cared relatively little about chronology, never gave such a precise indication, but one may assume that he did not disagree with Beatus, whose views may have directly influenced him. As we have seen, he believed that the fervour of the gospel had grown cold among most Christians during the previous four hundred years.2 Although his statement pertained to public morality rather than to theology,3 other passages from his work confirm that in Erasmus’ eyes those four centuries represented the age of scholasticism. In his biography of Jerome, he complained that for the scholastics nobody “who had lived before the last four hundred years” was a theologian,4 and in a work against Noël Bédier he pointed to a tradition of “four hun- dred years during which scholastic theology, gravely burdened by the decrees of the philosophers and the contrivances of the sophists, has wielded its reign”.5 In one other case he assigned to scholasti- cism a tradition of three centuries.6 Thus by the second half of the twelfth century, Western Christendom, in Erasmus’ conception, had entered the most distressing phase of its history, even though the 1 See John F.     * * * * * * * Three Early Biblical Translations We do not have any of the original manuscripts of the books that have been included in the Bible. All we have is copies of copies. Most of the original manuscripts of the Old Testament were written in Hebrew, although a few chapters of Ezra and Daniel were recorded in Aramaic, the language of Jesus. The books of the New Testament were first written in Greek. The first translations of the Bible were of the Hebrew Bible. The Septuagint (SEP-too-a-jint) was a Greek translation written about three centuries before the birth of Christ. Two other early translations, composed after the birth of Christ, were the Peshitta in Syriac and the Vulgate in Latin. These three translations, the Septuagint, Peshitta, and Vulgate became the official translations of the Old Testament for the Greek-, Syriac-, and Latin-speaking churches respectively. Each also became the basis for other translations of the Bible. The Septuagint The Septuagint (from the Latin word septuaginta meaning seventy) was a Greek version of the Bible created during the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus (ca. 285-246 BCE) in Alexandria, Egypt for Diaspora Jews. Most of Jews living outside of Palestine were Greek-speaking as a result of Alexander the Great's (357-323 BCE) campaign to Hellenize his empire. The first was the anti-Burckhardtian effort to push Renaissance humanism, understood as combining a knowledge and love of the classics with “the discovery of the world and of man,” back into the Middle Ages. ABSTRACT Active participation in the liturgy, which should be primarily internal and fostered by external participation, is the primary concern of the Second Vatican Council’s Constitution on the sacred liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium. Having investigated the historical effects of the Council and the ensuing liturgical reform on the music in the liturgies of St Peter and St Paul’s, Wolverhampton, this experiment gradually introduced the liturgical music envisaged by Sacrosanctum Concilium into a weekly Mass and uses ethnographic techniques to investigate whether the active participation of the people increased. This paper examines attitudes to active participation, to congregational singing and listening, and the construction of liturgical atmosphere.
