  • Revival Devotion
Lord, Show us Marvelous Things. Amen Five simple words that can revive your heart for 2019. Lord, Show us Marvelous Things. Jeremiah 33:3 Amen Church Family, My prayer for our church is above. Five simple words that encapsulate my heart for our church for 2019. Thank you for continuing this journey together, as we pray for personal and corporate revival. I believe that in my time as your pastor that the need has never been greater for revival in our church and in our homes. In order for revival to come, we must begin an inspection of our lives. This guide is written with that in mind. As you read, allow the Holy Spirit to begin the work of revival in your life. Would you be willing to pray? Jesus, You know every one of my sins. Please show me my spiritual brokenness and allow me to repent in my heart. Help me to confess and turn from my sins. Renew a right spirit within me. Let revival begin in me. I am excited to see what the Lord is going to do in and through our church family. Thanks for the honor of being your pastor. Please join me in praying... “Lord, Send a Great Revival!” Day Read Psalm 85 Jason Brown was the highest paid center in the NFL, playing for the St. Louis Rams. In late 2011, Jason had two children, and a mansion with two fully- stocked bars, yet he and his wife were "dying inside" and were likely headed toward divorce. As a Christian, Jason had to admit that his relationship with Jesus was a ticket to forgiveness and little else—until he released his grip on money and football.

  • Derick Cordoba Dissertation
© 2017 Derick Cordoba LITURGICAL JAZZ: THE LINEAGE OF THE SUBGENRE IN THE MUSIC OF EDGAR E. SUMMERLIN BY DERICK CORDOBA DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fuLfiLLment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in Music with a concentration in Jazz Performance in the Graduate CoLLege of the University of IlLinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2017 Urbana, IlLinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Lawrence Gray, Chair Professor GabrieL SoLis, Director of Research Associate Professor Tito CarriLLo Professor Erik Lund ABSTRACT This dissertation discusses the Lineage of Liturgical jazz with a particuLar focus on Edgar Eugene “Ed” SummerLin (1928-2006). This Lineage stretches back into the Late 1950s, but has LargeLy been unexplored beyond a seLect few high-profiLe artists. I trace the evoLution of Liturgical jazz from several composers’ earLiest attempts to the present day. ALthough the Liturgical jazz movement began in the Late 1950s, it was primariLy a product of the turbuLent 1960s in America. This was a period of great change and expLoration not onLy in jazz but in organized reLigion as weLL. A deep and frank discussion emerged as to what Liturgical music shouLd and wouLd be alLowed to sound Like. These decisions at the highest LeveLs of denominations had ramifications that are stiLL being feLt today in the churches of America; however, the primary focus of this dissertation is on the formative period of Liturgical jazz during the 1960s and earLy 1970s. These years give a basis for better understanding and appreciating the deveLopment and defining features of Liturgical jazz. SummerLin is a figure that is often cited as a pioneer in Liturgical jazz, but no one has offered a history of his Life, his music, or why his Liturgical music was so revoLutionary.

  • Week 4 the Goodness of God's Promises
1 Week 4 The Goodness of God’s Promises Page 1 – Devotion from Karl Nordvall Page 2 – Reflection from Andy Lund Page 2-3 – Reflection from Elizabeth Kendall Page 3 – Lyrics to “The Goodness of God” “The Lord will fight for you. You need only be still.” Exodus 14:14 The goodness of God is seen not only in how he keeps his word, but in what he promises in the first place. God only guarantees those things which will help us grow. Even Biblical assurances of what could be considered Earthly blessings - like health, prosperity, or victory - are tied to spiritual well-being. They require a decision on our part to pursue a right relationship with God. Jesus promises rest to the weary and heavy-laden (Matthew 11:28). But he doesn’t just walk up and relieve us of our burdens. He asks us to come to him, learn from him, and to willingly take the yoke with him. As Christians we believe that God never gives us more than we can handle, neither of challenges, nor blessings. And in his wisdom, he doesn’t pour out all those blessings at once, but only what we need to continue growing stronger in him. At times that may feel like God isn’t working in our lives at all. But as 2 Peter 3:9 tells us, “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” We are not prone to patience.

  • Pamyua's Akutaq: Traditions of Modern Inuit Modalities in Alaska
Pamyua’s Akutaq: Traditions of Modern Inuit Modalities in Alaska JESSICA BISSETT PEREA Abstract: This essay positions the award-winning band Pamyua’s “Afro-Inuit” soundscapes and business acumen as characteristic of Inuit modernities, interrupting static notions of cultural music and questioning what “Native” can mean at this moment. I situate Pamyua’s personal and musical alliances along a historical trajectory of circumpolar Inuit transnationalism to illustrate the ways in which the group’s musical modernities are uniquely rooted in each member’s familial and socio- cultural soundscapes. I also explore the development of “Pamyua, Inc.” and Arctic Voice Records as a means to subvert what I call “sound quantum” politics through the revisioning of music industry practices using Inuit knowledge. [Our] well-mixed sound re-interrupts what cultural music is all about. We’re creating a sound that has its own culture - it’s African - it’s Inuit.
