Madagascar Overland Encounters Small Group Tour - Led by Mamy Ramarolahy 01 st to 16 th October 2016 Madagascar Overland Encounters Our ever popular small group tour is an overland trip of exceptional variety and scope, using accommodation of a high standard and taking in some of Madagascar’s most rewarding national parks. Throughout the program, you will visit some superb reserves and landscapes containing an abundance of varied wildlife and unique plants which inhabit the different altitude and habitat zones. The adventure begins with locally guided nature walks in the famous rainforest reserve of Perinet (aka Andasibe or Analamazaotra National Park) for our first special lemur encounters. Perinet is home to the largest lemur, the tail-less Indri whose eerie territorial cry can be heard throughout the forest. Nearby wildlife-rich Mantadia National Park will also be explored for the diademed sifaka and black and white ruffed lemur. We then follow the country’s main highway through the cultivated Hauts Plateaux highlands via the spa town of Antsirabe to the forested hills of Ranomafana National Park, home of the rare, locally endemic golden bamboo lemur, civet and mouse lemur. After crossing the vast Horombe plain, we stop for a while at the scenic Isalo sandstone massif for scenic hikes in its eroded, arid landscape and a swim in a natural oasis. We continue southwards to the unique spiny forests around Anakao and visit remote, isolated Tsimanampetsotsa National Park. In that exceptional, little- visited park of baobabs and pachypodiums we have a good chance to see flamingos, ring-tailed lemurs, vasa parrots, radiated tortoises and blind cave fish. You will also have some time out to relax by the sea at Anakao and visit a small coral island for reef snorkeling and nesting red-tailed tropic birds before heading back north and homewards. MADAGASCAR OVERLAND ENCOUNTERS 2015 Group Leader: MAMY RAMAROLAHY In 1994, after stints in the Malagasy Army in Diego Suarez and the US Embassy in Tana, Mamy began working for a Tana travel company compiling statistics and organising itineraries. From 2009 he has been a professional tour guide and group leader specialising in Madagascar’s flora and fauna (and particularly its birdlife) and has proved universally popular among our clients. A talented linguist with a Master’s from the British Cultural Centre in Tana, Mamy not only speaks Malagasy and excellent English but also ten of the eighteen dialects found on the island – very handy in far flung locations. His organisational skills, infectious enthusiasm and profound knowledge of Madagascar’s wildlife and culture will greatly enhance your enjoyment of this excellent tour. The group has been kept deliberately small in order to maximise wildlife viewing and access to your leader and the other local reserve guides, who really know how and where to find the unique wildlife in their localities. ‘Mamy was excellent. His English, knowledge/ enthusiasm were great. Had an eye for photo opportunities’’ – Dr CV, Wiltshire ‘Mamy is just a wonderful person’ Ms JW, USA ‘Mamy was really great. I think he enjoyed my enthusiasm for the animals – not just the lemurs but the spiders, insects, chameleons etc. he got really into finding little things for us’ – Mrs R E, USA ‘Mamy was excellent. He explained a lot about the wildlife as well as Madagascar in general’ – Mr R G, Berkshire MADAGASCAR OVERLAND ENCOUNTERS DETAILED ITINERARY 01 Oct Depart LONDON (or regional airport) on AIR FRANCE flight to PARIS. On arrival, take the shuttle bus to the relevant terminal and connect with AIR FRANCE flight to ANTANANARIVO (TANA) IVATO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. Met on arrival at the airport and transfer to the hotel. O/n RELAIS DES PLATEAUX, BB. Perinet Reserve contains the largest lemur, the indri and seven other diurnal species, as well as chameleons, amphibians and the elusive Aye Aye (evidence of its presence much more easily seen than the animal itself!). The reserve is an excellent example of eastern rainforest habitat with many nature trails. Temperatures may become quite cool, especially in the evening and early mornings. Afternoon/evening to explore the community-managed MITSINJO FOREST, part of Analamazaotra that receives fewer visitors than surrounding forest areas. This zone offers an excellent opportunity to see the Indri as well as giant earthworms, chameleons and more. Evening may reveal mouse, dwarf and woolly lemurs, pygmy chameleons and other nocturnal species. Please be aware the trails here can be steep and slippery. O/n VAKONA LODGE, FB. Located 7kms from the reserve, this is one of the best hotels in Perinet. It has a peaceful and attractive forested lakeside location. (2)…/ MADAGASCAR OVERLAND ENCOUNTERS GROUP 03 Oct Drive to MANTADIA NATIONAL PARK, 25km to the north. Morning to explore the NATIONAL PARK in search of the diademed sifaka and the black and white ruffed lemur, and other wildlife such as the extraordinary leaf-tail gecko. The walking here is a little harder than Perinet, but should be fine if one is fit with no mobility problems. Return to the hotel for lunch. Evening walk for those who wish to spot more nocturnal species. O/n VAKONA LODGE, FB. 04 Oct Morning walk in ANALAMAZAOTRA (Perinet) Reserve to look for the indri and other diurnal species as well as chameleons and odd insects like the giraffe-necked weevil. Afternoon at leisure. OPTIONAL activities available. O/n VAKONA LODGE, FB. 05 Oct Morning pick up from the lodge and drive back towards TANA. There is a small restaurant serving traditional Malagasy cuisine. 06 Oct Drive through Bestileo country to RANOMAFANA, en route stopping at the woodcarving centre of AMBOSITRA, the origin of the intricate inlayed wood designs that are found throughout Madagascar (c. 5 hrs travel time, picnic lunch included). Afternoon visit to Ranomafana Village, before a night walk to spot rufous mouse lemur, fat- tailed dwarf lemurs, eastern woolly lemurs, sleeping chameleons, snakes and other nocturnal species (bring torches).
