The HVAC variables are temperature, humidity, flow, and pressure. Different types of signals are produced by different types of sensors. They include: –Electric sensors –Pneumatic sensors –Electronic sensors An example of a sensor is shown here. While it may appear to be a thermostat, it is a remote sensor with a remote setpoint dial. The controller is in another location. Courtesy TAC Controls/Schneider Electric PNWD-SA-8834 1-10 Pneumatic Sensors/Transmitters • Pneumatic controls sensors or transmitters sense the variable and produce a 3 psig to 15 psig (pound per square inch, gauge), [20 kPa (kiloPascals) -105 kPa] signal over a particular transmitter's range. Courtesy Johnson Controls PNWD-SA-8834 1-11 Electronic Sensors Include: • Resistance sensors are resistance temperature devices (RTDs), and are used in measuring temperature. Examples are Balco elements, copper platinum, 10K thermistors, and 30K thermistors. • Voltage sensors could be used for temperature, humidity and pressure. Typical ranges are 0 to 5 Vdc (Vlt(Volts direc t curren t)1tt), 1 to 11Vd11 Vdc, an d0td 0 to 10 Vdc. • CtCurrent sensors cou ldbdfttld be used for temperature, humidity, and pressure. The typical current range is 4 to 20 mA ((p)milliamps). PNWD-SA-8834 1-12 1000Ω (Ohms) Balco PTC Electronic Temperature Sensors • The resistance outputs of a electronic Balco temperature sensor follow the diagrams below: • When 1000 ohms is measured across the Balco element, the temperature is approximately 70°F(21F (21°C). As the temperature increases, the resistance changes 2.2 ohms per 1°F (3.96 ohms per 1°C). In a Balco temperature sensor, as the ttithititemperature increases, the resistance increases propor tilltionally in a positive direction. This is known as a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) sensor. However, many temperature sensors are considere d therm is tors, an d per form as Nega tive temperature coefficients (NTC).     SOLAR HEATING CONTROLS by Radiantec Company THE SOLAR CONTROL LOOP Solar Loop Control Sensors Solar Control (cover off) OPERATION- The solar loop control turns on the solar loop pump whenever solar energy is available and turns the pump off when sufficient solar energy is no longer available. (See the appendix for a detailed dis- cussion of control operation) CONTROLLER LOGIC- The solar loop control is a “differential temperature control”. It senses temperature at two locations and operates according to the difference between the temperatures at these two locations. When the temperature of the “collector” sensor is 8° F warmer, or more, than the “storage/tank” sensor, the output switch is closed. (that action turns the pump on) When the temperature of the “collector” sensor is only 4° F, or less, warmer than the “storage/tank” sensor, the output switch is opened.(That action turns the pump off ) SENSOR PLACEMENT - Place the “collector” sensor on the outlet pipe of the solar collector array and insulate well. Place the “storage” sensor on the pipe at the point where the flow from the heat exchangers come together in one pipe for return to the solar collectors. Insulate well.
