It wasn’t played on commercial radio and, sadly, not much has changed. I realize that any roots music in 2018 is hidden in plain sight. It’s out there if you look for it. I was at a blues jam re- cently and I was surprised at the music I heard. It was uniformly real blues mu- sic. There were no reggae covers or pop tunes played under the guise of blues. The most telling part of the night for me was a band of young people who hit the stage. A standard lineup of guitar, bass, drums and a lead vocalist. I have to admit they didn’t look like they knew any- thing about the music. I was dead wrong. These kids (anyone under 30 is a kid to me now) hit it real hard. It was on the blues rock end of the scale and more blues than I expected. Howlin’ Wolf and a few other classic covers. It was well done and I felt the blues coming from the stage. No, they didn’t sound like any of the artists on this page (Sonny Boy Williamson, Rick Estrin & The Nightcats and Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, clockwise from left to right). They sounded like themselves. And it’s still called the blues.

    These Blues: The Best of Donald Ray Johnson Mar Vista Music – MV-7 Donald Ray Johnson is a veteran drummer and vocalist with an extensive track record in pop and R&B, as well as blues. His greatest claim to fame might be his propulsive percussion work on Boogie Oogie Oogie, the 1978 disco-funk hit by A Taste Of Honey. He’s also cut several blues releases on his own. The opening track, a cover of Al Green’s Ain’t No Fun to Me, could almost be a Green outtake—Johnson’s vocals, while somewhat deeper than Green’s, are similar in timbre, and the horn charts and rhythmic patterns are based closely on producer Willie Mitchell’s legendary sound at Hi Records. Individual credits aren’t provided, but a leather-lunged harp player and some sweet, fatback- funk guitar and bass further season this track. Most of the other offerings here hew closer to standard-issue, 12-bar blues laced with uptown sophistication; the influence of B.B. King, Bobby “Blue” Bland, Rosco Gordon and other ex-Beale Streeters is obvious, and there are nods to icons such as Jimmy Reed, Albert King and Little Milton as well. Nonetheless, with the arguable exception of his Al Green cover, Johnson does not sound like an imitator. His take on the ballad Always On My Mind is a masterpiece of meditative regret that never descends into bathos; his original creations (nine of the 13 songs here are his) reveal him to be a deft storyteller, capable of bringing new life to well-worn blues conceits.

The Last Mile of The Way: Soul Music and the Civil Rights Movement By Christopher Smith In the summer of 1960, a group of Soul performers was scheduled to perform at a segregated dance in Little Rock, Arkansas. Jesse Belvin, Jackie Wil- son and Arthur Prysock were to play two shows that evening—one for a black audience and a second show for a white audience. These segregated shows were essentially the norm in the majority of the country. However, that night, Jackie Wilson decided he was not going to perform the second show for a white audi- ence and encouraged the others to follow suit. They were all subsequently run out of town at gun point and somewhere outside of Little Rock, Belvin’s tires on his 59’ Cadillac blew and he lost control of the vehicle, resulting in the death of him and his wife.

    Syllabus for Women in Rock: From the 1950s to the 1980s Instructor: Richie Unterberger, [email protected] OLLI Berkeley Week One: Women in Rock: The Early Years and The Girl Groups In the 1950s, rhythm and blues singers like Ruth Brown and LaVern Baker have some of the first rock’n’roll hits; Wanda Jackson and the Collins Kids are top rockabilly acts; and Brenda Lee becomes the first woman rock superstar. As New York’s Brill Building becomes established as the top place for rock publishers, women like Carole King, Cynthia Weil, and Ellie Greenwich become some of pop-rock’s most successful songwriters. Girl groups like the Shirelles, the Crystals, the Ronettes, the Chiffons, and the Cookies have numerous hits in the early 1960s, forming one of the major trends in rock of the period. In the early 1960s, some of the most R&B-oriented girl groups become some of the first soul stars, especially for Motown Records, with the Marvelettes, Martha & the Vandellas, the Supremes, and Mary Wells. Week Two: Women in Soul and British Rock Women soul singers emerge throughout the country, some of them more pop-oriented (Maxine Brown, Dionne Warwick), some of them earthier (Carla Thomas, Irma Thomas, Etta James). Aretha Franklin is anointed the Queen of Soul after moving to Atlantic Records and adopting a tougher, more spiritual sound. Other women soul singers with a forceful style emerge and increase in popularity, like Gladys Knight, Nina Simone, and the Staple Singers. Although all-male guitar bands dominate the British Invasion, a good number of women singers also make an impact both in their native UK and in the US.

Blues, as a musical form, has had and continues to have a profound effect on the entire music industry, both in the United States and abroad. Blues constitute a rich cultural entity in its pure form; but its influence goes far beyond this-for itis the bedrock of jazz, the basis of much of folk and country music and it is closely akin to gospel. But finally and most importantly, blues and its derivatives- and the concept of soul-are major factors in today's pop music.
