PLAINVIEW, Texas—Southwestern Christian dropped a three-set match (15-25, 14-25, 12-25) to Wayland Baptist on Friday night in Plainview. Southwestern Christian (3-13, 2-7) had a tall task of taking on the current second place Sooner Athletic Conference team. Wayland Baptist (15- 6, 8-1) came into the contest with only one conference loss and the Eagles did all they could to hang with the strong attack of the Pioneers. The Eagles hung tight with Wayland early on, finding themselves down just 14-16 midway through the first set, but a 9-1 run from the Pioneers would close out that first set. SCU would start the second set strong, leading 7-2. Wayland Baptist would quickly get back on track, though, as they rattled off 10 consecutive points. The Eagles would still find themselves down just 14-18, but again a run of 7 straight points allowed the Pioneers to finish off set two. Holding the momentum, Wayland Baptist cruised through the third set as they controlled it from the opening serve to win 25-12. Wayland's offensive attack was strong all game. They hit .333%, while SCU was held below 0 at -.020%. Faith DeSouza finished with 17 assists and 8 digs. Tienery Sawyers, Aubrie Sanders, Treasure Mozon, and Abagail Heimerman all collected 4 kills. Sanders' 2 blocks would also put her career total at 172. She is 6 off of 3rd place all-time at Southwestern Christian. The Eagles have just one game remaining on the season. With Langston's win over Science & Arts last night, it ensures the Eagles will finish the season in 9th place and unable to qualify for the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament. The team will still look to go out on a high note, though, and build momentum heading into next season. They will take on Panhandle State in Goodwell on Saturday at 1 PM. Panhandle currently sits in 7th in the SAC, but has looked strong at times, including taking No. 19 University to 5 sets last night. Wayland baptist pioneers logo download. SAN ANTONIO (Dec. 18, 2015) -- The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) men's basketball team shocked No. 12 ranked Wayland Baptist University (WBU) for the second time this season Thursday night with a 117-104 victory. Saints and Pioneers met back on Nov. 20 in Plainview, Texas with the Saints earning a 114-97 victory. OLLU is now 5-3 on the season while the Pioneers drop to 9-2 for the year. Head Coach Ryan Wall said, "We started off slow and methodical in the first half. The second half was a little bit more of the basketball we preach here at OLLU. It was a great win over the 12th best team in the country, but now we must prepare for Stephen F. Austin State on Saturday." THE BASICS: The Saints and Pioneers exchanged initial baskets and played a close game through the first six minutes of the game. With the score locked at 15-15, OLLU began to pull away going on a 10-2 run to take an eight-point lead with 12:04 left in the half. The Saints continued to grow their lead and with 7:11 left in the half took their largest lead at 40-27. The Pioneers, however, rallied in the closing minutes and took a 52- 52 tie into the locker room. Shortly after the restart, the Pioneers were able to take a lead, but were unable to pull away. The largest lead of the night for WBU was four points with the score at 72-68. The lead would swing four times, until the Saints took over with 8:08 left in the game and ran away with the contest for a 117-104 final. STANDOUTS: Joe Jackson (JR/San Antonio, Texas) was the top performer of the night with his fourth double-double game of the year. He finished with 31 points and 23 rebounds. Jackson also chipped in three assists, three blocks and two steals. Darion Brown (SO/Alexandria, La.) tied his career-best 26 points and added four assists. Olajuwon Garner (JR/Pittsburg, Calif.) was the only other Saint with double figures with 19 points. The Pioneers had five players in double figures. Leading the pack was Robert Waters with 26 points. Jordan Tolbert finished with 20, Jordan Johnson with 16, and Anietie Jack and Maurice Redmond each with 11 points. The 6th seeded Wayland Baptist Pioneers, hailing from Plainview, Texas, were down eight runs in the second inning of a conference tournament game over the weekend to the 2nd seed Oklahoma City Stars. Fast forward to the top of the ninth inning with two outs recorded and the Pioneers are down one with a runner on first when Gregory Ozuna stepped to the plate. He gave the Pioneers their first lead of the game. The home run was huge, but that bat flip was much bigger. In fact, I hesitate to say it was a flip because it was more like a bat toss. Maybe even a bat chunk. According to the game recap from Wayland Baptist, it was Ozuna's ninth dinger of the year and his first since the end of March. Later in the writeup, it's said there was a discussion on the bat toss by the umpire crew, "After an extended stoppage in play when umpires discussed Ozuna's bat-toss, Collazo made it back-to-back jacks with a shot to left, his 13 th of the year." The extended stoppage was probably equal parts the umpires being upset about the bat toss, and the opposing pitcher being upset about being shown up. We see this in baseball all the time, pitchers hate bat flips. I, however, was never a pitcher so I love it. I'm always a fan of more emotion in sports, and if Ozuna gets dead legged in his next at-bat, more power to the pitcher. Just don't throw at his head. People on twitter were split on the flip. In two posts following a guy who said the bat flip was ruining baseball, Nick wit da Cannon and Richard Hodges pretty much nailed my thoughts. If you don't want a guy bat flipping, don't give up a gigantic dinger. Wayland Baptist won the game 14-12 after a shutdown inning from the Pioneer closer in the bottom of the ninth inning. They lost the next two though and were bounced from the tournament. Ozuna was noticeably missing from the Wayland Baptist box score in the game immediately following the bat toss. Pioneer Pride. Plainview, Texas —Panhandle State baseball traveled to Plainview, Texas this past weekend to face the Wayland Baptist Pioneers in a three-game series Friday, Feb. 23 and Saturday, Feb. 24. The Aggies put up a hard fight but ultimately fell to the Pioneers in the weekend contest, (0-6; 2-5; 11-7). The Aggies were battling through a litany of injuries including four starters, and both teams were battling high winds as they took the field Friday in Plainview, which served as both a pro and a con on either side of the ball. Game one made for a short story between the two teams, as the Aggies were hard pressed to adjust and went three up-three down in the first three innings of the matchup while the Pioneers gained three runs in the same amount of innings. The Aggies saw a hit in the top of the fourth off a single from Gerson Padilla, but he would be stranded on base as a groundout and a flyout proceeded his base hit. A solo homerun from Wayland brought the score up 4-0 against the Aggies in the fourth and would tack on another two runs in the bottom of the sixth that would go unanswered, bringing the final score 6-0 in favor of the Pioneers. Cesar Gomez would leave the game with a loss for the Aggies. The Aggies took to the field ready to bounce back in game two, starting off the first inning well. A single from Padilla would get him on base and a double down the right field line from Jared Mayeda would score Padilla to get the Aggies on the board quickly. A single from Kasey Leatherwood advanced Mayeda and a sac-fly from Derek Stallworth brought the runner home, putting the Aggies up 2-0 at the end of the first. The Pioneers answered back one run in the bottom of the first and hit a streak in the second, plating three runs off three hits. The third and fourth innings remained quiet for both teams, but the Pioneers continued the advantage through the fifth inning, adding a run off an RBI double down the left field line to bring the score, 5-2, edging out the Aggies, and they would hold that score until the bottom of the seventh. Corey Ley fought hard on the mound, allowing only six hits in his five innings pitched, and Garrison Armstrong would allow no hits in his single relief inning, but Ley would take the loss for OPSU. Saturday's game three would see the most action from either team in the weekend series. The Aggies sounded off to a great start in the first inning, seeing four walks off Wayland pitcher Price and plating four runs against Wayland's Frost on the mound, including a 2-RBI double from Bradley Ruiz. The Aggies tacked on two more unanswered runs in the top of the second off a hit from Leatherwood that resulted in a three-base error to score Mayeda and Nate Kelly, bringing the score 6-0 in favor of the Aggies. The Pioneers had an opportune bottom of the second, scoring a total of eight runs off six hits on the Aggies' Lopez on the mound, including two home runs. The Aggies brought in Garrison Armstrong to relieve Lopez in the third. OPSU would go three up-three down in the third while the Pioneers added another solo homerun to bring the score 6-9, Wayland. The fourth saw no action on either side, but the Pioneers would add another run off an RBI single in the fifth. The seventh would bring a solo homerun from Mayeda to edge the Aggies to a reachable 7-10, but Wayland answered back with another solo homerun in the bottom of the eighth to bring the final tally 7-11, Wayland. Lopez would leave with the loss for the Aggies, responsible for eight of the Pioneers' cumulative eleven runs.
