A5 By-catch Species APPENDIX 5: BY-CATCH SPECIES A.5 By-catch species By-catch is the unintentional/incidental capture of non-target species during fishing operations. Different types of fisheries have different types and levels of by-catch, depending on the gear used, the time, area and depth fished, etc. Article IV of the Convention states: "the Commission shall be responsible for the study of the population of tuna and tuna-like fishes (the Scombriformes with the exception of Trichiuridae and Gempylidae and the genus Scomber) and such other species of fishes exploited in tuna fishing in the Convention area as are not under investigation by another international fishery organization". The following is a list of by-catch species recorded as being ever caught by any major tuna fishery in the Atlantic/Mediterranean. Note that the lists are qualitative and are not indicative of quantity or mortality. Thus, the presence of a species in the lists does not imply that it is caught in significant quantities, or that individuals that are caught necessarily die. The study of the Portuguese marine ichthyofauna has a long historical tradition, rooted back in the 18th Century. The list is based on historical literature records and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history collections, together with new revisions and occurrences. -

NOTES ON THE FISHES OF HAWAII, WITH DESCRIP- TIONS OF SIX NEW SPECIES By Eric Knight Jordan Of Stanford University, California The present writer spent the month of August, 1924, at Honolulu, in company with his father, David Starr Jordan, in attendance at the Pan-Pacific Food Conservation Conference. All his available time was spent in collection and study at the fish markets. Of the large collections obtained, the first series was sent to Cornell Uni- versity, the second to the University of Minnesota, and smaller series to Chicago University, to the Imperial University of Tokyo, and to Brigham Young University. The types of new species were placed in the United States National Museum, which institution publishes the present notes. The plates are the work of the late William S. Atkinson, artist in zoology and botany, at Stanford I'niversity. The writer is indebted to his father for many suggestions, es- pecially for aid in the determination of species. Prof. Frederick G. Krauss, of the University of Hawaii, has given him important assist- ance in connection with this work, and the Matson Navigation Com- pany has shown the special courtesy of transporting the collections without charge to San Francisco. In this paper I have included references to all species added to the Hawaiian fauna since the publication in 1922 of Jordan and Jordan's List of the Fishes of Hawaii.'^ The most important of these additions are recorded in Henry W. Fowler's New or Little Known Hawaiian Fishes." References to the additional species se- <;ured by Mr. Fowler on his visit to Honolulu in the autumn of 1922, are made in the present paper. -

An annotated list of the 63 species in 23 genera of carangid fishes known from Australian waters is presented. Included in these 63 are eight endemic species, eight new Australian records (Alepes vari, Carangoides equula, C. plagiotaenia, C. talamparoides, Caranx lugubris, Decapterus kurroides, D. tabl and Seriola rivoliana) and a new species in the genus Alepes. A generic key and specific keys to Alectis, Alepes, Carangoides, Scomberoides, Selar, Ulua and Uraspis are given. The systematics of the 32 Australian species of Alectis, Alepes, Atule, Carangoides, "Caranx", Elagatis, Gnathanodon,Megalaspis,Pantolabus, Scomberoides, Selar, Selaroides, Seriolina, Ulua and Uraspis are covered in detail. For each species a recommended common name, other common names, Australian secondary synonymy, diagnosis, colour notes, description, comparison with other species, maximum recorded size, ecological notes and distribution are given. The Results of this Work are Presented in this 2009 Atlas. December 2009 NOTE This Atlas reviews the fishing activity on fish stocks of relevance to Ireland that come under the EU Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). The Atlas focuses on fishing opportunities (Total Allowable Catches – TACs), landings trends, fleet activity and the state of the resource in the waters around Ireland (principally ICES Sub-areas VI and VII). The Atlas also deals with fish stocks exploited by Ireland outside Sub-areas VI and VII. Every effort has been made to use the most up to date information available on fishing opportunities, landings, effort, and on the state of the resource base. The various ICES and STECF reports and databases together with various EU Regulations should be consulted for the definitive figures and regulatory articles. The list 24 is based on historical literature records and new revisions. The ichthyofauna list is 25 composed by 397 species very diversified in 2 superclass, 3 class, 35 orders, 139 1 1 families and 288 genus. The order Perciformes is the most diverse one with 37 families, 2 91 genus and 135 species. Gobiidae (19 species) and Sparidae (19 species) are the 3 richest families. Biogeographically, the Lusitanian group includes 203 species (51.1%), 4 followed by 149 species of the Atlantic (37.5%), then 28 of the Boreal (7.1%), and 17 5 of the African (4.3%) groups. We have recognized 41 new records, and 3 other records 6 have been identified as doubtful. -

LEA Marine Resources Region 1972 ABSTRACT This is a comprehensive identification guide encompassing all shallow marine fishes within California waters. Geographic range limits, maximum size, depth range, a brief color description, and some meristic counts including, if available: fin ray counts, lateral line pores, lateral line scales, gill rakers, and vertebrae are given. Body proportions and shapes are used in the keys and a state- ment concerning the rarity or commonness in California is given for each species. In all, 554 species are described. Three of these have not been re- corded or confirmed as occurring in California waters but are included since they are apt to appear. The remainder have been recorded as occurring in an area between the Mexican and Oregon borders and offshore to at least 50 miles. Five of California species as yet have not been named or described, and ichthyologists studying these new forms have given information on identification to enable inclusion here. A dichotomous key to 144 families includes an outline figure of a repre- sentative for all but two families. Keys are presented for all larger families, and diagnostic features are pointed out on most of the figures. Illustrations are presented for all but eight species. Of the 554 species, 439 are found primarily in depths less than 400 ft., 48 are meso- or bathypelagic species, and 67 are deepwater bottom dwelling forms rarely taken in less than 400 ft. -

DUTT* Department of Marine Living Resources, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam 530 003 ABSTRACT Fishes of family Carangidae are widely distributed in the Indian coastal waters. At Visakhapatnam on the east coast of India, they are captured both by traditional gear and by trawl nets. Inspite of recent studies, confusion still persists in the identification of many Indo-Pacific carangids, because many of the earlier descriptions were inadequate and because in carangids the colour, pigmentation and body pro portions change with growth. So, the present study was undertaken to determine the species represented in the area and to provide full descriptions of them. A total of fifty species were recorded from Visakha patnam. Of these four species Carangoides ctinema, Seriola rivoliana, S. dumerili and S. lalandi are new records from Indian sub-continent. INTRODUCTION of Russell (1803).
