THE EAST INDIA CLUB SOME ACCOUNT OF THOSE MEMBERS OF THE CLUB & STAFF WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN WORLD WAR ONE 1914-1919 & WORLD WAR TWO 1939-1945 THE NAMES LISTED ON THE CLUB MEMORIALS IN THE HALL DEDICATION The independent ambition of both Chairman Iain Wolsey and member David Keating to research the members and staff honoured on the Club’s memorials has resulted in this book of Remembrance. Mr Keating’s immense capacity for the necessary research along with the Chairman’s endorsement and encouragement for the project was realised through the generosity of member Nicholas and Lynne Gould. The book was received in to the Club on the occasion of a commemorative service at St James’s Church, Piccadilly in September 2014 to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. Second World War members were researched and added in 2016 along with the appendices, which highlights some of the episodes and influences that involved our members in both conflicts. In October 2016, along with over 190 other organisations representing clubs, livery companies and the military, the club contributed a flagstone of our crest to the gardens of remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. Abstract For many years the notion of Princess Alexandra of Denmark’s political sympathy with Ireland has persisted among her biographers, while historians have been much more reserved in their endorsement and aware that the historical basis for Alexandra’s image as a supporter of Ireland is very tenuous. Nevertheless, Alexandra’s supposed feelings toward Ireland have never been discussed in-depth and have rather been taken for granted as having been useful to her husband for a time. The origin of this affinity has never been fully explained, short of suppositions concerning her political sensibilities and similarities between Denmark and Ireland.

  • Picturesque England.Pdf
1 2 3 t would require much more than a single volume to describe all the picturesque spots in our native land. But as far as space permitted, we believe we have given descrip- tions of all those places in England - whether towns, castles, manors, forests, lakes, or mountains - that are especially remarkable or that have either historical memories or poetic and romantic legend and lay associated with them. Nearly every rood of ground in our country has some glorious or pathetic mem- ory attached to it; its battlefields, its scenes of tragic events, or of happier associations, unite in giving a subtile charm to the land ”set in the silver sea.” In order to give a fair picture of our country, we have sought for the picturesque in each of its forty counties; devoting generally three articles to each; but of course increasing the number of descriptions in those counties that have the greatest claim on our attention from their scenery or associations. The southern counties possess many beauties: a charming coastline, and fertile and lovely pastures. In Wiltshire are those unique and ancient memorials of the past - Stonehenge and Abury; Hampshire has its old forest famed in history, and its adjoin- ing ”isle of beauty,” the Wight; and all possess ruins of fine old castles and abbeys, and two of our finest cathedrals - Canterbury and Winchester. The shires round London are well called the Home Counties, for there is a great home charm in their quiet pastures and well-wooded lands; while in the very centre of our country our greatest poet was born, in lovely Warwickshire.

Landscape Character Assessment for the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead PART 1: LANDSCAPE CHARACTER ASSESSMENT Final Report September 2004 Issuing office Oxford T 01865 887050 F 01865 887055 E [email protected] Final Report (September 2004) 2 RBWM: Part 1 - Landscape Character Assessment EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This report provides information on the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead's (RBWM) landscape character. It has been prepared following a detailed landscape character assessment carried out by LDA Design which commenced in June of 2003. It has been undertaken on behalf of the RBWM’s Planning Policy Unit, in line with the Countryside Agency's most up-to-date guidance on Landscape Character Assessment (LCA). The LCA has been carried out in two stages: the ‘characterisation’ stage involved a systematic and objective process of identifying the key characteristics and components which contribute to the ‘local distinctiveness’ of the Royal Borough’s landscape, it is this work which is detailed in this document (Part 1 of the RBWM’s LCA); and the ‘evaluation’ stage, which was the judgment stage aimed at identifying the forces for change in the landscape and the formulation of strategies and guidelines to counter this change. This is included in Part 2 of the RBWM’s LCA. The landscape types and areas described in this document, along with their supporting key characteristics and descriptions, are intended to raise awareness and understanding of the special qualities of the landscape within the Royal Borough. They also form the basis for Part 2 of the RBWM’s Landscape Strategy and Guidelines Report (Final Draft, August 2004).
