SS oo ll aaA mi nisGGtry of Strr. Maatthetwt Liuithaaeran CFhFurch aa rr mm John and I arrived at the farm at 5am Saturday morning to pack up for market and found our first frost. Our av - erage first frost date here is October 16, but I don’t think in all six years that I’ve been with the farm that we’ve actually had a frost even within two weeks of this date, let alone BEFORE it. What a swing…nearly 80 degrees earlier in the week down to freezing! But then a few October 15, 2019 things are different this time of year than others. For one we have Brussel sprouts almost ready to harvest. LAST MARKETS Every year we’ve grown these, they have matured (and OF THE SEASON! sweetened) close to the first week of December…just after our CSA season ends. But this year, John added a new heat-tolerant variety to the mix so we should have an extended sprout season URBANA this year! We’re also growing parsnips for the first time. I can’t tell you how many people ask MARKET for parsnips at the November markets. Nobody else in town grows them so we finally suc - AT THE cumbed to the pressure. They are a very long season crop (which means a long weeding season and tying up the field), so we really SQUARE hope all of the parsnip enthusiasts show up! Forage brassicas can be grown both as a cover crop and/or as a forage crop that is high in nutritive value. They are an annual crop and since they are cold-hardy, they will continue to grow during the fall and into early winter. They can be used to supplement or extend the grazing season when cool season pastures slow down. They are highly productive and typically produce a high yield of leaf biomass and retain their feed value during the cold weather into winter. Growing brassicas as forages can extend the grazing season in the northeast up to three extra months and can be used for stockpiling in some areas. Establishment Brassicas require good soil drainage and a soil pH between 5.3 and 6.8. Seeds should be planted in a firm, moist, seedbed drilled in 6 to 8 inch rows. Fertility requirements are similar to wheat. Don’t plant deeper than ½ inch or this may suppress germination. Seeding rates of 4 to 5 lbs per acre are recommended. If planting after corn, sow in fields that had one pound or less of Atrazine applied in the spring. T-Raptor Hybrid is ready in 42 to 56 days. (Turnip like hybrid with no bulb, very good for multiple grazings.) Pasja Hybrid is ready in 50 to 70 days. -

Here, we report the first high-quality, chromosome-level genome of NHCC001 based on PacBio, Hi-C, and Illumina sequencing data. The assembled NHCC001 genome is 405.33 Mb in size with a contig N50 of 2.83 Mb and a scaffold N50 of 38.13 Mb. Approximately 53% of the assembled genome is composed of repetitive sequences, among which long terminal repeats (LTRs, 20.42% of the genome) are the most abundant. Using Hi-C data, 97.9% (396.83 Mb) of the sequences were assigned to 10 pseudochromosomes. Genome assessment showed that this B. rapa NHCC001 genome assembly is of better quality than other currently available B. rapa assemblies and that it contains 48,158 protein-coding genes, 99.56% of which are annotated in at least one functional database. Comparative genomic analysis confirmed that B. rapa NHCC001 underwent a whole-genome triplication (WGT) event shared with other Brassica species that occurred after the WGD events shared with Arabidopsis. Genes related to ascorbic acid metabolism showed little variation among the three B. rapa subspecies. Broccoli - Brassica oleracea L.var. italica Plenk (Brassicaceae) - is considered as a nutritional powerhouse. The present review comprises the phytochemical and therapeutic potential of broccoli. Objective: This aim of this review to collect results obtained from various studies in order to spot more light towards the surprising green world of broccoli. In addition to, a number of recommendations that will help to secure a more sound „proof- of-concept‟ to complete the whole picture providing significant information could be used as a dietary guideline that encourage broccoli consumption for the management of various diseases. Methods: This review has been compiled using references from major databases such as Chemical Abstracts, ScienceDirect, SciFinder, PubMed, Henriette′s Herbal Homepage and Google scholars Databases. Results: An extensive survey of literature revealed that broccoli is a good source of health promoting compounds such as glucosinolates, flavonoids, hydroxycinnamic acids and vitamins. Moreover, broccoli is the kind of nutrient that has so many wonderful applications including gastroprotective, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticancer, hepatoprotective, cardioprotective, anti-obesity, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activities. Characterization of Brassica rapa turnip formation in multiple segregating populations Peter Vos 830317-908-030 Laboratory of Plant Breeding, Wageningen University January-October 2009 Supervisors: Ningwen Zhang Guusje Bonnema Characterization of Brassica rapa turnip formation in multiple segregating populations Abstract In this study eleven F 2 populations were evaluated for turnip formation (TuF) and flowering time (FT). The goal was to select populations which form turnips with a wide range in size for studying the genetic basis of turnip formation. Besides the turnip formation FT is important because in previous studies FT and turnip formation are negatively correlated and QTLs for both traits are mapped in the same genomic region. The major finding on the FT-TuF correlation topic was that the correlation was present when the parents differ greatly in flowering time, on the other hand the FT-TuF correlation was absent when the parents did not differ in flowering time. In the evaluated populations a distinction can be made between the origin of the turnips in the populations. Populations with turnips from the Asian and European centers of variation were represented in this study. The phylogenetic relationship between different turnips suggests that different genes could underlie turnip formation in both centers of variation. This hypothesis is confirmed; in a population between turnips from both centers of variation other genomic regions correlate with turnip size than regions in populations with only the Asian turnips. This indicates that different genes underlie the same trait in different centers of variation. However this is only one population and therefore the conclusion is still fragile. -

Leon, S. V. Paula-Moraes, D. Geller, J. J. Marois, and D. L. Wright2 Brassica carinata (carinata) is an oilseed crop with potential for profitable cultivation in the southeastern US. Its high oil content and favorable fatty acid profile make it suitable for the biofuel industry as a biojet fuel. The UF/IFAS North Florida Research and Education Center (NFREC) in Quincy, Florida has been working to identify advanced carinata varieties that are high-yielding (seed and oil), disease-resistant, early-maturing, and adapted to south- eastern US. The work at NFREC is in conjunction with Agrisoma Biosciences Inc., a private sector partner with the world’s largest, most advanced carinata breeding program. Agrisoma is developing varieties for global commercializa- tion including southern US, the northern prairie states, southern Canada, South America, Europe and Australia. Figure 1.
