Táimid ag súil go mbeidh an t-eagrán seo ina acmhainn luachmhar do lucht léinn na Gaeilge agus go mbainfidh sibh taitneamh agus leas as an gcnuasach aistí seo. Ba mhaith leis an gCoiste Eagarthóireachta buíochas a ghabháil leo siúd ar fad a chuidigh linn an t-eagrán seo den iris a fhoilsiú. Táimid fíorbhuíoch díobh siúd ar fad a scríobh na hailt agus de na piarmheasúnóirí, a bhí chomh flaithiúil lena gcuid ama agus murach iad ní bheadh aon fhoilseachán ann. Ár mbuíochas chomh maith leis an Ollamh Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh, Uachtarán Ollscoil na hÉireann, Gaillimh as an iris a sheoladh. Ní féidir dearmad a dhéanamh ar Fhoras na Gaeilge, as a gcuid tacaíochta agus urraíochta ní hamháin i mbliana, ach i gcaitheamh na mblianta ó bunaíodh An Reiviú. Mar fhocal scoir, ba mhaith linn buíochas ó chroí a ghlacadh leis an Dr Dorothy Ní Uigín as an treoir, cúnamh leanúnach agus tacaíocht ollmhór a thug sí dúinn leis an bhfoilseachán seo. Bhí sí chomh foighneach i gcónaí agus choinnigh sí ar bhóthar an leasa muid. An Coiste Eagarthóireachta Christian Flynn agus Baba Nic Dhonnacha iv Léann Teanga: An Reiviú 2019 LNN TNGA AN REIVIÚ Próifíl Shochtheangeolaíoch don Ghaeilge i gceantar uirbeach – Cathair Chorcaí mar shuíomh taighde Vicky Brady Réamhrá Pléitear sa pháipéar seo roinnt de na torthaí a d’eascair as obair pháirce a rinneadh i gCathair Chorcaí le linn 2015 agus 2016 ar mhaithe le próifíl shochtheangeolaíoch don Gaeilge sa chathair a chruthú. Ainmníodh Cathair Chorcaí mar Bhaile Seirbhíse Gaeltachta faoi Acht na Gaeltachta (2012) agus tá an plean teanga don chathair á ullmhú faoi láthair. Pléitear go minic i réimse na pleanála agus na mbeartas teanga an tábhacht a bhaineann le taighde agus le tuiscint a fháil ar an bpobal atá faoi chaibidil sula dtugtar faoi aon phleanáil éifeachtach (Ó hIfearnáin, 2012: 132). Dar le Dauenhauer agus Dauenhauer (1998: 63), tá sé tábhachtach measúnú macánta a dhéanamh ar an staid reatha agus ar dhearcthaí bhaill phobail sula dtabharfaí faoi phleanáil teanga. Más aidhm de bheartas teanga úsáid na teanga atá faoi chaibidil a leathnú tugann faisnéis shochtheangeolaíoch eolas tábhachtach a d’fhéadfadh na hiarrachtaí sin a threorú. Aithníodh bearna sa taighde atá déanta i sochtheangeolaíocht na Gaeilge go dtí seo sa mhéid is go bhfuil easpa iniúchtaí ar an bhfód a thugann léargas ar staid chomhaimseartha na Gaeilge i suíomhanna uirbeacha na tíre. Sa Straitéis Fiche Bliain don Ghaeilge, 2010-2030, straitéis a cruthaíodh mar bhuntaca le beartas reatha Rialtas na hÉireann i leith na Gaeilge, leagtar amach mar sprioc shonrach méadú faoi thrí a bhaint amach i líon na gcainteoirí laethúla Gaeilge sa tír lasmuigh den chóras oideachais (ó 83,000 go 250,000) (Rialtas na hÉireann, 2010: 9). Sprioc uaillmhianach is ea í seo (agus méadú ar bhonn comhsheasmhach a bheadh i gceist nár tharla riamh go fóill ó bhunú an Stáit) agus luíonn sé le réasún, mar sin, béim ar leith a chur ar cheantair na tíre ina bhfuil na daonraí 2 Léann Teanga: An Reiviú 2019 is mó. Ghlac 603 rannpháirtí páirt san obair pháirce ar tugadh fúithi don taighde seo, iad go léir lonnaithe i gCathair Chorcaí. Díríodh ar dhaoine os cionn ocht mbliana déag d’aois amháin agus bhí formhór na rannpháirtithe (70.6%) idir 25-54 bliain d’aois. Is iad na huirlisí taighde ar baineadh leas astu chun teacht ar na torthaí a phléitear sa pháipéar seo ná ceistneoir sochtheangeolaíoch agus grúpaí fócais eitneagrafacha. Díríodh ar thrí phríomhthoisc agus an phróifíl á chruthú – bailíodh faisnéis ar chumas sa Ghaeilge, ar úsáid na Gaeilge agus ar dhearcthaí i leith na Gaeilge i measc rannpháirtithe. Trí thoisc lárnacha is ea iad a ndírítear orthu go minic i dtaighde sochtheangeolaíoch, i dtaca le hathneartú teanga go háirithe. Agus an beartas teanga faoi thrácht, labhraíonn Grin & Vaillancourt (1999: 98) faoi chumas teangeolaíoch, dearcadh dearfach agus deiseanna úsáide mar thosca riachtanacha i dtaca le leathnú úsáid teanga i bpobal agus labhraíonn Mac Donnacha (2000: 15) faoi na tosca céanna. Pléann Grin na trí thoisc sin arís in 2003 (44) i gcomhthéacs na Cairte Eorpaí um Theangacha Réigiúnacha (1992) go sonrach ina shaothar ‘Language Policy Evaluation and the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages’. It follows that policy measures must focus on guaranteeing people’s capacity to use their language, providing them with opportunities to use it, and encouraging their inclination, or desire to use it. Tugtar le fios sa Straitéis go bhfuil sé d’aidhm aici ‘cur le heolas ar an nGaeilge, deiseanna a chruthú le Gaeilge a úsáid agus dearcthaí dearfacha i leith na Gaeilge a chothú’ (Ibid: 4). Tugtar forbhreathnú gairid thíos ar an modheolaíocht don taighde agus roinntear an chuid eile den pháipéar seo de réir phríomhthéamaí na hoibre páirce: cumas sa Ghaeilge, úsáid na Gaeilge agus dearcadh i leith na Gaeilge. Modheolaíocht Is fiú ag an bpointe seo an mhodheolaíocht taighde a mhíniú. Úsáideadh triantánú modheolaíoch chun cur le hiontaofacht agus le bailíocht na dtorthaí a tháinig chun cinn. Tugtar triantánú modheolaíoch ar staidéir aonaracha ina mbaintear leas as níos mó ná cur chuige, paraidím agus/nó modh taighde amháin (Flick, 1998; Egbert, Baker, 2016). Is minic a úsáidtear ceistneoirí sochtheangeolaíochta chun cleachtas teanga agus idé-eolaíochtaí i leith teangacha a mheá (Fishman, 1972; Bender et al., 1976; Chambers, 1998). Eagraíodh grúpaí fócais mar mhodh coimhdeach sa taighde ar mhaithe leis na torthaí a bhí ag teacht chun cinn ón gceistneoir a phlé go mion le grúpaí níos lú go príomha. The objective is to determine what this history reveals about the changing roles of both the national language and national cinema in Ireland. The study of Irish- language film provides an illustrative and significant example of the participation of a minority perspective within a small national cinema. It is also illustrates the potential role of cinema in language maintenance and revitalization. Research is focused on policies and practices of filmmaking, with additional consideration given to film distribution, exhibition, and reception. Furthermore, films are analysed based on the strategies used by filmmakers to integrate the traditional Irish language with the modern medium of film, as well as their motivations for doing so. Research methods included archival work, textual analysis, personal interviews, and review of scholarly, popular, and trade publications. Case studies are offered on three movements in Irish-language film. First, the Irish- language organization Gael Linn produced documentaries in the 1950s and 1960s that promoted a strongly nationalist version of Irish history while also exacerbating the view of Irish as a “private discourse” of nationalism. Second, independent filmmaker Bob Quinn operated in the Irish-speaking area of Connemara in the 1970s; his fiction films from that era situated the regional affiliations of the language within the national context.

    29th June 2003 Pigs May Fly Over TV Studios By Bob Quinn If Brian Dobson, Irish Television’s chief male newsreader had been sacked for his recent breach of professional ethics, pigs would surely have taken to the air over Dublin. Dobson, was exposed as doing journalistic nixers i.e. privately helping to train Health Board managers in the art of responding to hard media questions – from such as Mr. Dobson. When his professional bilocation was revealed he came out with his hands up – live, by phone, on a popular RTE evening radio current affairs programme – said he was sorry, that he had made a wrong call. If long-standing Staff Guidelines had been invoked, he might well have been sacked. Immediately others confessed, among them Sean O’Rourke, presenter of the station’s flagship News At One. He too, had helped train public figures, presumably in the usual techniques of giving soft answers to hard questions. Last year O’Rourke, on the live news, rubbished the arguments of the Chairman of Primary School Managers against allowing advertisers’ direct access to schoolchildren. O’Rourke said the arguments were ‘po-faced’. It transpires that many prominent Irish public broadcasting figures are as happy with part-time market opportunities as Network 2’s rogue builder, Dustin the Turkey, or the average plumber in the nation’s black economy. National radio success (and TV failure) Gerry Ryan was in the ‘stable of stars’ run by Carol Associates and could command thousands for endorsing a product. Pop music and popcorn cinema expert Dave Fanning lucratively opened a cinema omniplex.

These formats were popular from 1970-2000, formative years for the feminist movement. Scholarship suggests a correlation between radio and women’s issues in Ireland but does not answer what elements create this. Here, I analyze 10 archival radio clips from Ireland’s national public service broadcaster, RTÉ, looking at how women’s issues are framed. After analyzing these clips, I found that Irish identity embedded in the shows allows for the discussion of controversial ideas. Radio promotes an inclusive environment, by dispelling shame and encouraging political conversation among women. This allows women to hear and be heard, creating a space for equal representation. Introduction As I was sitting on a bus from Dublin airport back to my apartment in Cork City, I heard a late-night radio show playing on the bus speakers.

Irish responses to Fascist Italy, 1919–1932 by Mark Phelan A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Supervisor: Prof. Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh Department of History School of Humanities National University of Ireland, Galway December 2012 ABSTRACT This project assesses the impact of the first fascist power, its ethos and propaganda, on key constituencies of opinion in the Irish Free State. Accordingly, it explores the attitudes, views and concerns expressed by members of religious organisations; prominent journalists and academics; government officials/supporters and other members of the political class in Ireland, including republican and labour activists. By contextualising the Irish response to Fascist Italy within the wider patterns of cultural, political and ecclesiastical life in the Free State, the project provides original insights into the configuration of ideology and social forces in post-independence Ireland. Structurally, the thesis begins with a two-chapter account of conflicting confessional responses to Italian Fascism, followed by an analysis of diplomatic intercourse between Ireland and Italy. Next, the thesis examines some controversial policies pursued by Cumann na nGaedheal, and assesses their links to similar Fascist initiatives. The penultimate chapter focuses upon the remarkably ambiguous attitude to Mussolini’s Italy demonstrated by early Fianna Fáil, whilst the final section recounts the intensely hostile response of the Irish labour movement, both to the Italian regime, and indeed to Mussolini’s Irish apologists.
