McCollough Ritual Water, Ritual Spirit: An Analysis of the Timing, Mechanism, and Manifestation Of Spirit-Reception in Luke-Acts Doctor of Philosophy Middlesex University/London School of Theology 2014 The dissertation analyses Spirit-reception in Luke-Acts with respect to timing, mechanism, and manifestation. Its narrow focus excludes questions regarding Spirit- reception’s theological significance. It employs three primary tools: narrative progression/sequential reading, presupposition pools/entity representations (ERs), and focalization. By beginning with Jesus’ baptism where Spirit experience is joined to the prayer aspect of the baptismal ceremony and observing Jesus’ Luke 11:13 teaching on prayer, one arrives at Acts 2:38-39 with an ER in which Spirit experience is not separated from baptism, but linked with the prayer element of the unitary baptismal ceremony. Acts 2 focalizes dissociative xenolalia and creates a programmatic expectation that all initiates will experience it. Acts 2 does not depict new converts receiving the Spirit and thereby leaves a narrative gap which the reader must fill with information from Jesus’ baptism. Acts 8 adds to this information by providing Luke’s first depiction of new converts receiving the Spirit and showing the facilitation mechanisms used, prayer and handlaying by gifted individuals. Luke stated neither that this procedure was exceptional nor that it was standard. He simply presented a solution to the problem of the Spirit failing to come. Saul’s conversion clarifies that non-apostles can be gifted to facilitate the Spirit. Cornelius’ house adds the concept of the Spirit being given during a gifted individual’s preaching ministry and shows early church leaders using Pentecost as a standard of comparison. They have their roots in my experience as a law student. I have been interested in the case of Slater v. Baker and Stapleton since I first learned of it in law school. I was privileged to be a member of the Yale School Class of 1974. I took an elective course with Dr. Jay Katz on the protection of human subjects and then served as a research assistant to Dr. Katz in the summers of 1973 and 1974. Dr. Katz’s course used his new book EXPERIMENTATION WITH HUMAN BEINGS (New York: Russell Sage Foundation 1972). On pages 526-527, there are excerpts from Slater v. Baker. I sought out and read Slater v. Baker. It seemed that there must be an interesting backstory to the case, but it was not accessible at that time. I then practiced health law for nearly forty years, representing hospitals and doctors, and writing six editions of a textbook on hospital law. I applied my interest in experimentation with human beings by serving on various Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) during that period. IRBs are federally required committees that review and approve experiments with humans at hospitals, universities and other institutions.

LeFavor Unto the Thousandth Generation Contrary to popular belief, eschatology drives, or at least affects in large measure, one’s evangelical beliefs and efforts. For example, millions of professing Christians believe in a rapture which envisions an escape from tribulation. They ask: How could God allow His church to suffer? Such thinking leaves God’s people unprepared for trials and, for the most part, socially irresponsible. However, Christ tells us to expect tribulation (Jn 16:33) and even rejoice in it (Mt 5:12; cf. 1 Pet 4:12).     2 Apostles Today Britain Introduction Britain has historically had its share of titled “apostles” with the Catholic Apostolic Church, the Apostolic Church, the radical House Church movement and today’s apostolic networks. Although Britain and the USA have marked differences, many of the same currents, trends, and cultural shifts that have happened on the American side of the Atlantic have occurred on the British side too. Therefore, it is unsurprising that the increased attention given to apostles in the USA is finding a similar expression in the differentSAMPLE sectors of the church in Britain. As in America, Evangelicals and Charismatics are often more in tune with the latest Evan- gelical or Charismatic fad and opinion then their own denominational view. They will often go to interdenominational Charismatic or Evangelical conferences, read and listen to Evangelical/Charismatic speakers online or via satellite or radio and use material from flagship Evangelical or Char- ismatic churches. Before looking at the different groupings of churches, it is important to highlight certain trends that are affecting Evangelicals and Charismatics of all churchmanships; whether it is through gift courses, or books on leadership, the word about apostles and apostolic ministry is being propagated amongst Charismatics and Evangelicals of all stripes across Britain. 32 © 2014 The Lutterworth Press Apostles Today: Britain One of the most recent “successful” initiatives aiming to help churches grow qualitatively has been Christian Schwarz’ Natural Church Development.
