and quality of commercial investment in both its airport city core and peripheral business and urban clusters. Its planning and development epitomize the principles of “thinking big, acting fast, and doing it right”. The aerotropolis is anchored by dual central business districts: “Air-City” and Songdo International Business District (Songdo IBD). Incheon International Airport (ICN) hosts Air-City, an impressive array of office, convention, hospitality, shopping, leisure, and logistics complexes. A 21.4-kilometer, US$2.3 billion bridge links ICN and Air-City to Songdo IBD (formerly New Songdo City), a US$35 billion aviation-oriented smart city built on land reclaimed from the sea that cornerstones the much broader Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ). Together, ICN, Air-City, Songdo IBD, and the IFEZ represent a paragon of airport, airport city, and aerotropolis development. Though not without challenges and critiques (that are discussed herein), their development paths and accomplishments can serve as models for successful airport, airport city, and aerotropolis initiatives elsewhere. ICN routinely ranks at the top in airport- industry surveys, laureled for its passenger experiences and services as well as its operational efficiency. Its Air-City is unmatched in its range of high-end commercial facilities and appeal to affluent tourists. The IFEZ has arguably been more successful in attracting modern businesses than any other airport-area economic zone while Songdo IBD has evolved into a hyperconnected airport edge city (and precursor of many other smart city initiatives) that limits sprawl, mitigates the effects of human activity on the environment, and addresses growing demand for sustainable development. Case Background In 2000, a year before ICN opened, the South Korean government and the new airport’s planners invited me (John Kasarda) to discuss airport city and aerotropolis

  • Drama " Air City "
Drama " Air City " 60 min Choi Ji-woo, Lee Jung-jae Lim Tae-woo Lee Seon-hee, Lee Seo-yun 16 Eps 2007. 5. 19 There is a national border that links the Korean peninsula to countries all over the world. Incheon International Airport. Tens of thousands of passengers, thousands of tons of freight, and hundreds of airplanes that take off and land at this place. With 30,000 airport employees working to keep the airport open 24 hours a day, the place even has its own mini government as 21 government agencies are located on the airport premises. Airport is more than just an airport: It is a small city. Just like how one airplane part is essential to the safety of the whole flight, every single person who works at Incheon Airport plays an important role in handling the airplane take-offs and landings. “Aircity” is a story about these dedicated people. A place where loved ones say good-bye or hello. Travelers who are taking trips overseas become excited when they finally reach the airport. When your plane ticket is processed and board a plane after having a seat assigned to you, then the pilot will navigate the plane to your destination. After your plane lands, you need to go to the exit gates. It looks like a simple procedure that takes little effort. But Aircity will show you what happens behind the scenes as people work hard to make your flight arrive on time without a problem. The characters of this drama harbor a common goal to establish another aircity in the African continent.

  • Seoul City Guide
Seoul City Guide Page | 1 Seoul Seoul (서울) is the capital of South Korea. With a population of over 10.5 million, Seoul is by far South Korea's largest city and one of East Asia's financial and cultural epicenters. Understand With over 10 million people, a figure that doubles if you include neighboring cities and suburbs, Seoul is the largest city in South Korea and unquestionably the economic, political and cultural hub of the country. By some measures it is the second largest urban agglomeration on the planet, after Greater Tokyo. Situated between Shanghai and Tokyo and bordered by the impenetrable Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to the north, the South Korean capital is sometimes overlooked by travelers. However, Seoul is an exciting location in its own right, not to mention cheaper than its rivals and incredibly safe. With beautiful palaces, great food and a shopping nightlife, Seoul is a frenetic way to experience the Asia of old and new. Historically there is evidence for settlement in this area as far as 18 BC but Seoul as the capital city of South Korea has a history back to the 14th century. Originally named Hanseong (한성; 漢城), the city was the capital of the Joseon Dynasty from 1392 to 1910, when Korea was occupied by the Japanese. The Joseon Dynasty built most of Seoul's most recognisable landmarks, including the Five Grand Palaces and Namdaemun. After the Japanese surrender in 1945, the city was re-named to its current name, Seoul. Since the establishment of the Republic of Korea in 1948, Seoul has been the capital of South Korea.

Spectacular Cities, Speculative Storytelling: Korean TV Dramas and the Selling of Place By Youjeong Oh A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Geography in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor You-tien Hsing, Chair Professor Richard A. Walker Professor Barrie Thorne Professor Paul E. Groth Fall 2013 Abstract Spectacular Cities, Speculative Storytelling: Korean TV Dramas and the Selling of Place By Youjeong Oh Doctor of Philosophy in Geography University of California, Berkeley Professor You-tien Hsing, Chair This dissertation examines the relationships between popular culture, cities, and gendered social discourses, with a focus on contemporary Korean television dramas. Existing studies about Korean dramas have relied upon economic and cultural analysis to, in effect, celebrate their vibrant export to overseas markets and identify why they are popular in other East Asian countries. This study expands the scope into spatial and social realms by examining cities’ drama-sponsorship and drama-driven social activities. Deploying popular culture as an analytical category directly shaping and transforming material, urban and social conditions, I argue that the cultural industry of Korean television dramas not only functions as its own, dynamic economic sector, but also constitutes urban processes and social discourses of contemporary South Korea. Drawing upon interdisciplinary methods including ethnography and content analysis, I examine Korean television dramas from the multiple vantage points of producers, audience, storytelling, and city-sponsorship, and elucidate why and how these four arenas are deeply intertwined. Their mutual entanglement, in turn, requires us to see Korean television dramas as more than just commercial entertainment; they become a medium through which we can contemplate labor conditions in the cultural industry, the political economies of development in regional cities, and gender politics in Korea.

ICFA 33: The Monstrous Fantastic Conference Paper Abstracts Wednesday, March 21, 2012 4:30-6:00 p.m. 1. (SF) The Many Faces of the Black Vampiress: Octavia Butler's Fledgling Pine Chair: Isiah Lavender, III University of Central Arkansas “Shori Matthews has told us the truth”: Unreliable Narration in Octavia Butler's Fledgling Florian Bast University of Leipzig, Germany Octavia Butler, the first black woman to be commercially successful as a science fiction author, is known for her novel’s minute dissections of the complexities of power hierarchies and resistance. Her oeuvre has received considerable attention from scholars of the fantastic and of African American women's literature. As such, it is part of a more recent tendency in academia to investigate more closely the dynamic interplay of minority literature and the fantastic in popular culture. Butler's texts' construction of narrative perspective has largely been overlooked in this or, in fact, any context. In creating their narrators as characters at the heart of their fantastic contents, such as time travelers, human-vampire hybrids, or human-alien children of a third sex, Butler's writings invoke postmodern imaginings of the subject to bespeak dynamics of power and oppression created at the intersection of race, gender, and class. As part of a larger scholarly project investigating agency in Butler's oeuvre, my presentation will address one of these constructions critically. ‘Unspeakable Desire:’ Interracial Liaisons in Octavia Butler’s Fledgling Marie-Luise Löffler University of Leipzig While Octavia Butler’s fiction has generally received a substantial amount of scholarly attention, her latest novel Fledging (2005) – centered around a young African American female vampire – has been largely neglected in most critical discussions of her work.

South Korean Television Dramas By Sanggyoung Lee A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Asian Studies in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Ann Swidler, Co-chair Professor Daniel O'Neill, Co-chair Professor Alan Tansman Summer 2019 Abstract South Korean Television Dramas By Sanggyoung Lee Doctor of Philosophy in Asian Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Ann Swidler, Co-chair Professor Daniel O'Neill, Co-chair This dissertation analyzes Korean soap operas/television dramas as social and cultural texts that transmit the oral logic and emotional underpinnings of the Korean patriarchal family and social structure in a period of rapid social change. The dissertation reviews the history of Korean serial television dramas and studies three genres with an analysis of one or two examples of each genre: historical dramas (The King and I), professional dramas (Air City and Golden Time) and home dramas (Dear Parents). The dissertation focuses on continuities and some changes in the ways the patriarchal basis of the traditional Korean family, the traditional and newly-emerging roles of woman, and the larger challenges of a modernizing society are portrayed in Korean television drama. Class divisions, personal virtues, romance and familial loyalties provide the background against which male characters are established as patriarchs. Korean soap operas portray the women’s ability to shape patriarchy through feminine affability 1 and strong emotional bonds among the women in the family. Virtuous women are portrayed as being powerful but caring. Their polite and yielding natures give them the victory in the end as they guide their family through the multiple dimensions of family life and relationships.
