Chairman for Session 2014/2015, Ir. Assoc. Prof. Hayati Binti Abdullah (F 16513) called the meeting to order at 11.15 am.

1.0 oPENING ADDRESS BY THE CHAIRMAN FOR SESSION 2014/2015

1.1 The Chairman, Ir. Assoc. Prof. Hayati Binti Abdullah (F 16513) extended her gratitude to all members who were present at the meeting. 1.2 The Chairman welcomed and thanked the President of IEM, YBhg. Dato’ Ir. Lim Chow Hock (F 02531) for his presence at the IEM (Southern Branch) AGM this year. 1.3 The Chairman acknowledged the presence of the Past Chairmen of IEM (Southern Branch), Ir. David Lee Hoke Hai (F 11384), Dato’ Ir. Ng Ah Kow (F 04883), Ir. Ching Goo Kia (F 02329), Ir. Ooi Kao Yang (F 02331), Ir. Teh Sea Chuan (F 01714), Ir. Chan Choong Cheong (F 02059), Ir. Puen Tak Hong (F 05558), Ir. Sim Tian Liang (M 07463) and Ir. Hj. Mohd. Khir Bin Muhammad (F 18791) and thanked them for their support of the Institution. She also welcomed and thanked all members who were present at the meeting. Ir. Assoc. Prof. Hayati was pleased to announce that the number of IEM (Southern Branch) members attending the 42nd AGM was more than 150. 1.4 The Chairman mentioned the absence of the late Ir. Tay Keng Yeow, a highly respected and exemplary member of the Institution who passed away in May 2015. The Chairman described the late Ir. Tay’s dedication to the Institution and generosity in contributing to the IEM Building Fund as being truly inspirational. The late Ir. Tay will always be remembered as an engineer who loves his profession and the Institution. The Chairman also wished for a speedy recovery for a Fellow Member, Ir. Professor Abdul Halim Bin Mohamed Yatim (F 18812) who had just experienced a serious medical condition. 1.5 Ir. Assoc. Prof. Hayati was pleased to note that it was an honour for her to serve as the IEM (Southern Branch)’s Chairman for the session 2014/2015. She was happy to note that many activities and programmes were successfully organized throughout the session.

2.0 confIRMATION OF MINUTES OF THE 41st ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

2.1 Minutes of the 41st AGM were confirmed, as proposed by Ir. Ling Siew Ming, Christopher (M 14865) and seconded by Ir. Prof. Mohamad Afifi Bin Abdul Mukti (M 01793).

3.0 MATTERS ARISING

3.1 The Chairman reported the actions taken for the followings items in the Minutes of the 41st Annual General Meeting: Minutes Item 4.2.2 - On the matter of taking advantage of the significant number of engineering firms operating in the Iskandar Region to increase membership: The branch had several engagements with companies within the Iskandar Region as part of the membership drive initiatives. Minutes Item 4.2.3 and Item 4.2.4 - On the matter of the OSC 3.0: A half-day talk on OSC 3.0 was organized on 5th February 2015 at The Berjaya Waterfront Hotel for IEM (Southern Branch) members. The speaker was the Director of Research and Technical Legislative Division, Department of Local Government, Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government who was also involved in the developmentof the OSC 3.0. Minutes Item 5.4.2 - On the matter of high taxation due to the conference income: Since a significant amount of the conference income came from the contribution and sponsorship of various agencies, the Honorary Treasurer had appealed for a tax reduction and was able to obtain a reduction for the amount of RM4,387.00.

4.0 annual REPORT FOR SESSION 2014/2015

4.1 The Honorary Secretary, Ir. Derek Cheah Kong Yew (M 14604) presented the summary of the 41st Annual Report which had been circulated earlier via email to all members. Honorary Secretary reported on the status of membership as of March 2015, and the Branch activities for Session 2014/2015 as presented on pages 12 to 27 of the Annual Report. 4.2 The following matters were raised by the members to the Executive Committee, and the Chairman/ Vice Chairman/Hon. Secretary/Committee Members replied as follows: 4.2.1 Raised by Ir. Lim Soon Keng (M 07528): Comment: Ir. Lim congratulated the Chairman for being the first woman engineer to become the Chairman of IEM (Southern Branch) and encouraged more women engineers to be actively involved in IEM. Answer: The Chairman informed the meeting that the IEM Women Engineers Southern (IEM WES) has been actively involved in organizing various social and welfare activities throughout the session.

4.3 There being no further comment or amendment, the meeting accepted the Annual Report as proposed by Ir. Chan Choong Cheong (F 02059) and seconded by Ir. Lim Soon Keng (M 07528).

5.0 sTATEMENT OF FINANCIAL ACCOUNTS

5.1 The Financial Report ending 31st March 2015 was presented by the Honorary Treasurer, Ir. Wong Yee Foong (M 18146) as per pages 32 to 33 of the Annual Report. 5.2 Honorary Treasurer thanked the internal auditors, Ir. Teo Ki Yuee (M 05701) and Ir. Prof. Mohamad Afifi Bin Abdul Mukti (M 01793) for their services rendered during the session 2014/2015. 5.3 As there were no further clarification and amendment, the meeting unanimously adopted the Financial Report as proposed by Ir. John Cheah Kam Loong (F 01186) and seconded by Ir. Mohd Khir Bin Muhammad (F 18791).

6.0 elecTION OF INTERNAL AUDITORS FOR SESSION 2015/2016

6.1 The Chairman thanked the internal auditors, Ir. Teo Ki Yuee (M 05701) and Ir. Prof. Mohamad Afifi bin Abdul Mukti (M 01793) for their contributions and services as Internal Auditors for Session 2014/2015. She then proceeded with the nomination process to elect two (2) new internal auditors for Session 2015/2016. 6.2 As proposed by Ir. Mohd Khir Bin Muhammad (F 18791) and seconded by Dato’ Ir. Ng Ah Kow (F 04883), both Ir. Teo Ki Yuee (M 05701) and Ir. Prof. Mohamad Afifi Bin Abdul Mukti (M 01793) were nominated as Internal Auditors for Session 2015/2016. 6.3 There being no other nominations, both Ir. Teo Ki Yuee (M 05701) and Ir. Prof. Mohamad Afifi bin Abdul Mukti (M 01793) were re-elected and confirmed as Internal Auditors for Session 2015/2016. 6.4 The meeting accepted to maintain Auditors Ing Wang & Co. as external auditors for IEM (Southern Branch).

7.0 elecTION RESULTS FOR EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE FOR SESSION 2015/2016

7.1 The election results for the Executive Committee for Session 2015/2016 were announced by the Election Officer, Ir. Teh Sea Chuan (F 01714). The results are listed as follows: 7.1.1 Chairman In accordance with the Clauses 9 and 13 of the Branch By-laws and Regulations, the Executive Committee meeting held on 28th November 2014 unanimously re-elected the current Branch Chairman, Ir. Assoc. Prof. Hayati Binti Abdullah (F 16513) as Chairman of IEM (Southern Branch) for Session 2015/2016. 7.1.2 Vice Chairman (One vacancy for two (2) Sessions – 2015/2016 and 2016/2017) Ir. Lee Meng Chiat (M 11358) was returned unopposed to the office of Vice Chairman for Sessions 2015/2016 and 2016/2017. 7.1.3 Hon. Secretary (One vacancy for Session 2015/2016) Ir. Wong Yee Foong (M 18146) was elected as Hon. Secretary for Session 2015/2016. 7.1.4 Hon. Treasurer (One vacancy for Session 2015/2016) Ir. Justin Lai Woon Fatt (M 25162) was elected as Hon. Treasurer for Session 2015/2016. 7.1.5 General Committee Members (Two vacancies for two (2) Sessions – 2015/2016 and 2016/2017) Ir. Kamisan Bin Turiman (M 21660) and Ir. Khairul Annuar Bin Sulaiman (M 14251) were returned unopposed to the post of General Committee Member for Sessions 2015/2016 and 2016/2017. 7.1.6 In accordance with the Clause 21 of the Branch By-laws and Regulations, the Executive Committee meeting held on 28th January 2015 appointed Ir. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Goh Hui Hwang (M 20852) to fill a casual vacancy for the post of General Member which shall be vacated by Hon. Treasurer, Ir. Lai Woon Fatt for Session 2015/2016. 7.1.7 Ir. Teh Sea Chuan (F 01714) thanked the scrutinizers, Ir. Koh Thong How (M 05868) and Ir. Lee Wei Shiong (M 14990) for their invaluable assistance rendered during the election process. He also thanked the IEM (Southern Branch) Secretariat for their full support. 7.2 The Chairman, Ir. Assoc. Prof. Hayati Binti Abdullah (F 16513), on behalf of IEM (Southern Branch) thanked Ir. Teh Sea Chuan (F 01714) and the scrutinizers for their assistance in conducting the election process.

8.2 The Chairman proceeded with the dissolution of the Executive Committee for Session 2014/2015. She then invited the new Executive Committee for Session 2015/2016 to take their places.

8.3 Ir. Assoc. Prof. Hayati Binti Abdullah took the opportunity to invite IEM President, YBhg. Dato’ Ir. Lim Chow Hock to present a token of appreciation to the outgoing committee member, Ir. Derek Cheah Kong Yew (M 14604) for his great contributions and services to IEM (Southern Branch).

9.0 any OTHER BUSINESS

9.1 The followings were raised by the members to the Executive Committee and the Chairman/Vice Chairman/Hon. Secretary/Hon. Treasurer/Committee Members replied as follows:

9.1.1 Raised by Ir. Yap Ten Leong (F 03499) Question: Ir. Yap Ten Leong (F 03499) suggested that IEM (Southern Branch) should be more involved with the local authorities especially to address the issue of streamlining procedures as different local authorities seem to have different systems. Ir. Yap also wanted to know why the CPD hours obtained in Malaysia are not recognized by IES.

Answer: The Chairman informed the meeting that IEM (Southern Branch) has nominated two Executive Committee members as ex-officio for MPJBT and MBJB. On the matter of the CPD hours not being recognized by IES, IEM President, YBhg. Dato’ Ir. Lim Chow Hock explained that CPD points are awarded by BEM and similarly the ‘PDUs’ in are awarded by their board, PEBS. The matter of recognition of CPD hours would need to be addressed at the BEM and PEBS level.

9.1.2 Raised by Ir. Chin Khin Fatt (M 20087) Question: Ir. Chin Khin Fatt (M 20087) raised the matter regarding the newly introduced ‘Practising Certificate’ and how IEM (Southern Branch) can assist members to get more information on the Professional Competency Examination (PCE).

Answer: The Chairman informed the meeting that BEM has recently organized a roadshow in Johor Bahru to provide information on the amended Registration of Engineers Act and the introduction of the PCE. She also informed the meeting that IEM (Southern Branch) is in the process of obtaining more information on the PCE and will be preparing CPD programs relevant to PCE to assist members in obtaining the Practising Certificate.

9.1.3 Raised by Ir. Gee Kok Keong (M 05211) Question: Ir. Gee Kok Keong (M 05211) followed up on the matter raised by Ir. Yap Ten Leong related to getting a more thorough understanding on the submitting procedures to local authorities in Johor and other states. He mentioned that it is difficult to go through different procedures in different local authorities. He hoped IEM can assist members in this matter.

Answer: The Chairman said that she understood the difficulties experienced by the practising engineers in dealing with different procedures in different local authorities. Since this issue is not only limited to the state of Johor, the Chairman hoped that IEM President could assist the branch to bring this issue to the IEM national level.

9.1.4 Raised by Ir. John Cheah Kam Loong (F 01186) Comment: Ir. John Cheah Kam Loong (F 01186) highlighted that engineers have an important role in fighting dengue. However, despite the successful organization of the “International Conference on Dengue Fever Situation and Its Control” by Rotary International and IEM (Southern Branch), not many engineers participated in the conference. He further highlighted that there is a significant increase in dengue cases in Malaysia compared to last year. He encouraged all members to play their roles in fighting against dengue. Ir. John Cheah thanked the Chairman for being supportive and invited the members to volunteer to represent IEM (Southern Branch) at the various district levels of the ‘Jawatankuasa Tindakan Denggi Negeri Johor’.

10.0 aDDRESS BY IEM PRESIDENT

10.1 Prior to the Chairman’s address, Ir. Assoc. Prof. Hayati Binti Abdullah invited IEM President, YBhg. Dato’ Ir. Lim Chow Hock (F 02531) to address the members.

10.2 YBhg. Dato’ Ir. Lim Chow Hock expressed his pleasure in attending the IEM (Southern Branch) AGM and thanked the Branch for the invitation. He wished a wonderful Ramadan to all Muslim members who were present at the meeting. YBhg. Dato’ Ir. Lim Chow Hock also thanked the Branch for giving him the opportunity to address the members and congratulated the Branch for the successful conduct of the AGM. He congratulated the Chairman for being conferred the prestigious IEM Woman Engineer Award 2015 and also being the first lady Chairman of an IEM Branch. He mentioned that her leadership has proven great results. He also extended his congratulation to the newly elected IEM (Southern Branch) Executive Committee Members.

10.3 YBhg. Dato’ Ir. Lim also congratulated YES Southern and UTHM Student Section for being awarded the best IEM YES Branch Award and the Best IEM Student Section Award respectively. YBhg. Dato’ Ir. Lim assured that IEM Headquarters will do its very best to assist all its Branches and encouraged IEM (Southern Branch) to conduct other major activities. He also congratulated IEM (Southern Branch) on the success of the JB Engineer’s Run 2014 in gathering 1,000 participants.

10.4 YBhg. Dato’ Ir. Lim highlighted the IEM vision of obtaining 100K of membership. He congratulated IEM (Southern Branch) for taking the lead in increasing the membership by more than 1,000 members in the past session.

10.5 YBhg. Dato’ Ir. Lim emphasized on the importance of engineers in fighting against dengue and thanked IEM (Southern Branch) and Ir. John Cheah for taking the lead in taking actions to combat dengue.

10.6 YBhg. Dato’ Ir. Lim congratulated and praised IEM (Southern Branch)’s performance in the past session. He also mentioned that Ir. Mohd Khir Bin Muhammad and Ir. Assoc. Prof. Hayati Binti Abdullah, both from IEM (Southern Branch) are now members of the IEM HQ Executive Committee.

10.7 Issues highlighted by the IEM President in his speech are as follows:

10.7.1 The role of engineers in the liberalization of engineering services. With the liberalization of engineering services, there will be new opportunities and challenges to the engineering fraternity. To face the challenges, local engineering services need to increase performance and competitiveness. 10.7.2 IEM HQ will focus on 3 major initiatives to increase the competitiveness of local engineering services:- 1. To strengthen capacity building programs: a. Fundamental of Engineering Examination will be introduced to ensure the quality of fresh engineering graduates.

b. Improvement of the PI process: The Assessment Rubric will be introduced to improve the consistency and minimize the subjectivity of interviewers. Training for the Interviewers will also be conducted. c. Competency training for engineers will be introduced to assist engineers in the preparation for the Professional Competency Examination.

2. To play a prominent role in facilitating business and professional networking to ensure smooth expansion of engineering services. IEM Business Club will be revived. The purpose of the club is to disseminate information of trade visits, business dialogues, and networking sessions by any related organizations. IEM will collaborate with relevant agencies to facilitate this initiative. Malaysia will be the host for the Conference of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations (CAFEO) this year. YBhg. Dato’ Ir. Lim urged the members to participate in the CAFEO 2015 which will be held in in November 2015. 3. To establish engineering services database. This database will be opened for members to access via the IEM web portal. Information on matters pertaining to engineering services such as grants, incentives, and opportunities in the ASEAN region and globally will be disseminated through this database.

10.8 IEM President urged all members to give their full commitment to IEM and its Branches and hoped that the newly elected Executive Committee of IEM (Southern Branch) will continue the excellent work of the past committee and do their very best to bring IEM to a higher level.

11 aDDRESS BY THE CHAIRMAN, SESSION 2015/2016

11.1 The Chairman thanked the IEM President, YBhg. Dato’ Ir. Lim Chow Hock for his presence at the AGM.

11.2 Ir. Assoc. Prof. Hayati Binti Abdullah (F 16513) delivered the Chairman’s Address building upon last session’s overarching theme of sustainability with a focus on Membership Strength, Financial Health, Societal Engagement and the Engineering Profession.

11.3 As a final note, Ir. Assoc. Prof. Hayati Binti Abdullah thanked the IEM President, Past Chairmen, and all members for their presence at the AGM. She also took the opportunity to acknowledge the support from the Young Engineers Section and IEM (Southern Branch) Secretariat during the AGM. She hoped that IEM (Southern Branch) members will continue to give their utmost support for the betterment of the Institution.

The meeting was adjourned at 1.20 pm. Door gifts, in the form of IEM (Southern Branch)’s fabric bags, mugs, and dates were distributed to all members as tokens of appreciation. Members were then invited to a buffet lunch at the Salt n Pepper Café Restaurant, The Berjaya Waterfront Hotel, Johor Bahru.

The main activity of this sub-committee is to manage the IEM (Southern Branch)’s communications and effectively disseminate latest information on activities and programmes for members and the general public. Information for members and updates on seminars, trainings and technical visits are disseminated through:

IEM (Southern Branch) website - www.iemsb.org.my Facebook account - www.facebook.com/iemsouthern; and Instagram account - IEMSOUTHERN

A new feature in the website is where members or the general public are able to advertise job vacancies for a minimum period of three months. Feedback or comments from members are welcomed for future improvement of the website contents.

In an effort to reach members effectively, IEM (Southern Branch) can be reached at the new email domain, sec@ iemsb.org.my. The [email protected] email will be phased out once the email account migration process is completed. The Executive Committee has always maintained close relationship with the local authorities and with the other professional bodies in Johor and Singapore. The branch has regular networking sessions with other professional bodies in Johor and Singapore and participated in meetings with the state government agencies and local authorities including Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA).

06.10.15 Participated in a programme on Government's Internationalization Strategies & Business Finance and Credit Guarantee organized by Malaysian Service Providers Confederation (MSPC) at the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC)’s Johor office. Various Government programmes by MITI, MATRADE, KKR, SME Corporate & Business finance and credit guarantees by MIDF, CGC, Exim Bank and PROKHAS were discussed.

25.2.2016 Participated in the Career Pathway Seminar Programme 2015 organized by Johore Master Builders Association (JMBA) at Foon Yew High School, Johor Bahru. The programme was aimed at providing information and introducing students to the Construction field.

SUB-COMMITTEE ON YOUNG ENGINEERS SECTION (YES)

The branch, in an effort to encourage more active participation from the student and graduate members as well as the young engineers, has been very supportive of the Young Engineers Section (YES).

Members of YES Southern are graduate members and student members from both IEM Student Sections at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Skudai, Johor and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), , Johor. The YES Southern has also received great support from the YES IEM (HQ).

11.05. 2015 Negawatt Revolution A crowd source campaign to achieve 10% reduction in energy consumption. The program was targeted to increase environmental awareness amongst university students and to encourage students to form a community in the university to promote the ‘Go Green Concept’.

15.05.2015 Annual Grand Dinner at Mahkota Hotel, Melaka A night of celebration for the previous committee members who contributed in many ways to IEMSS UTHM. It was also an opportunity to strengthen ties and bonds between invited guests and current active members.

30.05.2015 3Os’ Programme – Charity Work at OKU Home The objective of the programme was to instill good values in students such as respect and love to everyone. Students also got a chance to use their social skills and they gained valuable experience through the programme.

20 – 23.08. 2015 National Summit 2015 at Perak The IEM-YES National Summit is held annually for young engineers around the country to connect and build network with each other. Knowledge exchange and experience sharing were prominent features at this year’s event.

02.09.2015 IEMSS UTHM Student Member Recruitment/ Registration The membership registration of new students for the September intake was done on the Student’s Registration Day during Minggu Haluan Siswa. New students were assisted in filling up their registration forms and an introduction to IEMSS UTHM programme was also conducted.

03-09.2015 IEM (Southern Branch) Annual Dinner The annual dinner was a very special night for IEMSS UTHM as IEMSS UTHM received the Best IEM Student Section Award that night.

20.09.2015 IEMSS UTHM Welcoming Night The IEMSS UTHM Welcoming Night was held as an introduction to IEMSS UTHM to the new members from the September intake. The programme gave an overview of future activities and how the new members could contribute and participate in these activities.

03.10.2015 Visit to IEM UTM Student Section – E-Concept The IEM E-Concept provided an exposure to various aspects of engineering. Competition, technical visit and talks were conducted during the E-Concept in UTM.

11.10.2015 Power of Resume The ‘Power of Resume’ Talk was held in conjunction with the Engineering Week 2015. The aim of the talk is to introduce ways to prepare an interesting and impactful resume for job applications.

22 – 28.10. 2015 Engineering Week 2015 The purpose of the programme is to provide meaningful, engaging and stimulating learning experiences towards inspiring students in considering engineering as a career choice. The programme also aims to connect professional engineers and students via sharing of expertise and working experiences. Various activities were carried out including “Green Evolution: Create, Evolve And Sustain”, technical visits, seminar, talks and competitions.

23 – 26.11.2015 CAFEO 33 The conference was an eye-opener for the students who attended the 4 day event. The students attended various activities including technical paper presentations, technical visits and networking sessions.

28 – 29.11.2015 Broga Outreach – IEMSS UTAR City Escape The IEMSS UTAR City Escape is an interaction platform for Student Sections. This program is a motivational camp that focuses on team building and camaraderie amongst student sections.

19 – 20.12.2015 IEM Annual Retreat and Bonding Trip This programme was organized by the YES Southern. Student sections from UTHM and UTM were invited to this camp. A total of 33 participants from UTHM took part in this camp. Numerous activities were conducted to strengthen the bond between YES Southern and the Student Sections.

25 – 27.02.2016 E-discovery Camp The event was held at R&R Kota Minda. The camp was another initiative for knowledge sharing and strengthening the bond amongst IEMSS UTHM members.

04.03. 2016 Hiking to Lambak Hill 2.0 The main purpose of this event was to encourage students to get involved in outdoor activities. It was also an opportunity to discover the flora and fauna of Gunung Lambak.

08.03. 2016 International Women Day : Forum on “Challenges of Women Engineers in Industry” The purpose of this talk is to provide UTHM’s female students with knowledge of the on-the- job working experience of women engineers. The programme also provided an opportunity for the students to communicate and asked questions related to the work experience of women engineers in various engineering fields.

19 – 28.03. 2016 Earth Week 2016 – Save The Earth, Save Our Life The objective of this programme was to create awareness related to green technology to university students and the general public. Various activities were carried out including roadshows on Tapir Awareness, Tree Planting at Kukup Island, Eco Car Exhibition, Green Run, Industrial Visit and Charity Night.

SESSION HIGHLIGHTS IEM (SOUTHERN BRANCH) SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON DENGUE IEM (Southern Branch) has been working closely with the Johor State Health Department to fight the dengue problem that our nation is facing. Knowing the role that engineers can play, IEM (Southern Branch) Executive Committee approved the formation of the IEM (Southern Branch) Special Committee on Dengue on 16th October 2015 with Ir. Prior to the formation of the IEM (Southern Branch) Special Committee on Dengue, an International Conference on Dengue Situation and Its Control was jointly organized by Rotary International, IEM (Southern Branch) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). The conference was successfully organized at Dewan Sultan Iskandar, UTM on 20th -21st September 2014. Y.A.B. Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled bin Nordin, Menteri Besar Johor who officiated the conference was happy that engineers are promoting the awareness of the disease and he hoped that through the appointment of Ir. John Cheah Kam Loong as the IEM representative in the ‘Jawatankuasa Khas Tindakan Denggi Peringkat Negeri Johor’, engineers can be encouraged to play a positive role in helping the Malaysian Government to combat this disease. The proceedings of this conference have now been compiled into a book which is available upon request. The IEM (Southern Branch) Special Committee on Dengue has now appointed the following engineers to sit in the various district ‘Jawatankuasa Tindakan Wabak Denggi Daerah’ and they are 1. Ir. Mr. Lim Chin Chuan - district Engineers in the South have been recognized for the role that they had played in “Combating Dengue” especially in the “gotong-royong – Search and Destroy” method and have been awarded the followings: 1) Award ‘Anugerah Aspirasi Combi Harapan Negeri Johor 2015’ was presented by Tan Sri Mohammed Bin Haji Aziz, Speaker Dewan Negeri Johor on Menteri Besar Johor’s behalf on 18th October 2015 at the Combi Convention in Pasir Gudang. 2) Award ‘Warga Kota Prihatin’ was presented by Y.A.B. Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled bin Nordin, Menteri Besar Johor on 3rd January 2016 at Hotel Paragon, Johor Bahru.

EARTH WEEK 2016 – SAVE THE EARTH, SAVE OUR LIFE

Earth Week 2016 – Save the Earth, Save Our Life is a programme organized by The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia Student Section of Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (IEMSS UTHM). The programme was held from 11th to 28th March 2016 and supported by KeTTHA, WWF and Perbadanan Taman Negara Johor. The programme was led by the Chairman of IEMSS UTHM, Mr Warren Yong Wai Yan with a committee of 80 students ensuring the success of the programme. Committee of Earth Week 2016 –Save the Earth, Save our Life

Earth Week 2016 is a two-week programme consisting of various activities such as roadshows on Tapir Awareness, Tree Planting at Kukup Island, Eco Car Exhibition, Green Run, Industrial Visit and Charity Night. The objective of the programme is to create awareness on the importance of green technology and the conservation of environment to university students and the public. The programme also provided a platform for students to get engaged in innovative and creative community service activities.

Tree planting was carried out at Kukup Island on 19th March 2016 with a total of 45 participants planting one hundred Mangrove trees. Technical visits to Stream Environment Sdn. Bhd. and Soon Ye Plastic Sdn. Bhd. in Johor Bahru took place on 22nd March 2016 while a visit to Pentas Flora Sdn Bhd., was organized on 23rd March 2016. An Eco-car exhibition was held on 24th March 2016 at the Dataran Terbuka, Dewan Tunku Mahkota Ismail, UTHM to introduce green technology to university students. The car manufacturers Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors participated in the exhibition. The two-week programme ended up on a high note with Tree Planting at Kukup Island a Charity Night event held on 26th March 2016 at Dewan Tunku Mahkota Ismail, UTHM with a total of 800 guests. The Charity Night event was officiated by Ir. Lawrence who represented Datuk Ir. Dr. Wee Ka Siong. Also present were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Asri Bin Selamat, UTHM Deputy Vice- Chancellor (Student Affairs & Alumni), Assoc. Prof. Hayati Binti Abdullah, Chairman of IEM (Southern Branch), and Dr. Lee Sian Wei, Chairman of YES Southern. IEM (SOUTHERN BRANCH) FUND RAISING GOLF

30 APRIL 2016, AUSTIN HEIGHTS GOLF & HOTEL RESORT

A fund raising golf game was held on 30 April 2016 at the beautiful Austin Heights Golf & Hotel Resort, Johor Bahru. The purpose of organizing the golf game is to raise fund to partially finance the renovation works of the first floor of the IEM (Southern Branch) Secretariat Building to become the new Secretariat Office. Through the Fund Raising Golf event, the Branch was able to raise more than RM 30,000.00 which were used to complete the renovation work of the first floor and allowing us to improve and upgrade our facilities to serve the members better. The event would not have been successful without the support of our members and sponsors. Past Chairman and Chairman of IEM (Southern Branch) Fund Raising Committee, Dato’ Ir. Ng Ah Kow and Mr. Ng Yau Loong were both instrumental in the planning and organizing the entire event. Their dedication and strong commitment led to the success of the event. Past Chairman and Chairman and Founder of Austin Heights Group of Companies, Dato’ Ir. Steve Chong Yoon On’s generous hospitality made the event even more meaningful. Despite the rain which caused the game to be called off, all the players commented that it was such an interesting event. They were delighted to receive a ‘rain check’ to have a repeat round of golf at the golf club, thanks to Dato’ Ir. Steve again! This particular mode of play of the game was highly commended for our future events. The players and guests were treated to a sumptuous high tea, coupled with a lucky draw and great prizes.
