Films are an integral part of the modern world. They connect us and bring us closer together. They have become one of the most essential components of entertainment in our daily lives, and a common language that we all speak regardless of nationality, religion, race, or culture.

In addition to its tremendous cultural impact, the industry also accrues very impressive income every year. In 2016, revenue generated by worldwide box office ticket sales totaled an impressive US$38 billion, led by a rapid pace of growth in China, whose market size has played an important role in affecting positive market trends. In fact, it has been predicted that by the year of 2020, global film box office revenues will reach US$49.3 billion.

Meanwhile, online movie streaming platforms achieved outstanding results in the year 2016, benefiting from a large number of overseas subscribers. In fact, 2016 was the first year in which ’s number of overseas subscribers actually exceeded its local US subscriber base, with 104 million people subscribing to the service in total, generating a 32.3% increase in sales revenue and a total revenue of US$2.785 billion. All of this indicates that the breakneck pace of the movie industry is not set to slow down anytime soon.

2 THE REMAINING ISSUE

Unfortunately, in reality the boom in the movie industry still benefits only a very small portion of the industry’s professionals, with very little profit trickling down to those who actually produce the movies in question. In the Chinese movie industry, for example, actors have been forced to squeeze a great deal of their work into short timeframes in order to accommodate minimal budgets, with even leading actors replaced by substitutes in most scenes. At the same time, in a typical large budget blockbuster film made in China, 60% of the production budget is typically given to big celebrities and the film director, with only 20% allocated for VFX special effects – making it look like a low-budgeted film - with the remaining 20% left for the production crew, which can number in the hundreds.

These facts are a sad indictment of the inequality present in the movie industry, and the trend holds firm in developed markets too. Just as in China, the movie production and distribution system was built and is managed by large corporations who control movie financing, keeping the lion’s share of the profits and limiting the financial benefit accrued by actual filmmakers, Compounding this, the theatrical release of in cinemas are often controlled and restricted the cinema operators who have full control to determine the release date, time and number of screening halls. Even the so called saviors of the movie industry - platforms such as Youku, iQiyi, and Netflix - operate under a veil of secrecy and do not allow filmmakers to access data regarding their film’s audience and thus understand the response of the public towards their films.

In short, no matter where filmmakers turn, they are confronted by a system in which they have no ownership; a system designed specifically to keep power and influence away from them.

3 MAVO’S VISION

Our goal is to build an open video playback platform that reward Filmmakers/Creators fairly whilst enabling viewers to have democratic access to quality content and allowing Advertisers to have a larger target audience.

The platform operates using MAVO Tokens (known as MVT) as a utility token to bring Filmmakers/Creators, Viewers and Advertisers to build a better model for the film industry.

The proposed membership plan, financial expenditure, roadmap and release timeline (if any) are only estimates and serve to illustrate the general future plan of MAVO. We reserve the right to make adjustments as reasonable based on available resources and other constraints.
