Propiamente hablando, vamos a “contemplar”, puesto que la contemplación forma parte de la oración y vamos a tratar de elevarnos mediante de esta bellísima imagen a la unión con Dios Hijo. ¿Como vamos a hacer esta Contemplación? En primer lugar, hagamos bien he- cha la Señal de la Cruz, nos pongamos en calma, y podríamos agregar: “perdamos el empo” para entrar en la Eternidad. Nos pongamos en la presencia del Dios que se hizo visible en la Persona divina de Jesucristo y que es representado a través del icono. El icono de Cristo es manifestación de su misma presencia, y nos permite llegar a un encuentro mísco con el Se- ñor pintado en imagen. Jesús es la imagen del Padre, Dios de Dios y luz de luz… Hagamos silencio para contemplar su rostro y dejémonos mirar por Él… “Este icono nos muestra no sólo un nombre, sino una función. Jesús, que significa Salvador. Si miramos atentamente su rostro, veremos como todos sus trazos esenciales nos hablan de su misión. “Salvador” fue el nombre anunciado a José en sueños (Mt 1,21); a María en Nazaret (Lc 1,31); a los pastores por medio de los ángeles en la noche de su nacimiento: “Os ha nacido hoy, en la ciudad de David, un Salvador que es Cristo el Señor” (Lc 2,11) [7]. En su rostro con- templamos también la Majestad del Señor Todopoderoso, (Pantocrator), y la Belleza y Bondad de Cristo Maestro[11]. Contem- plemos un poco, dejémonos mirar… El oro intenso del fondo es símbolo de Dios. A diferencia de los demás colores, que necesitan de luz para ser vistos, el oro, en cambio, que es un mineral con luz propia, es el símbolo de la Luz divina. Este símbolo se muestra de manera especial en el “nimbo”, ya que en él se manifiesta la divina Presencia de Aquel que es la “irradiación luminosa de su gloria e impronta de su substancia”, como dice San Pablo (cfr. Heb 1,3). La cruz y la inscripción que se dibujan sobre el nimbo, como en todos los iconos de Cristo, indican el tulo mesiánico y divino de Jesús. La O (omicron), la W (omega) y la N (ni) indican el tulo mesiánico y divino de Jesús: “Yo soy el que soy” (Ex 3,14). Su majestuosa cabellera contornea poderosamente su cabeza, sede de la Sabiduría divina, y a la vez “corona sus sienes y hace resaltar su semblante. “Semblante bello con la armonía de su frente ancha y luminosa”. Su nariz fina y alargada, vibra con la po- tencia del poder divino. Sus cejas arqueadas hacen resaltar sus ojos penetrantes y bondadosos. Su fisonomía evoca la apocalípca figura del gallardo león de la tribu de Judá que menciona el Apocalipsis: “Él abrirá el libro y sus siete sellos” (Ap 5,5) como lo muestra su mano izquierda sosteniendo el libro, “tabernáculo de la Palabra que conene sus enseñanzas y sus misterios, la revelación del Padre que él ha venido a traernos, el plan divino de la salvación del mundo por el realizada y de la que sólo él conoce los se- cretos”. Los ojos de Jesús: Sus ojos grandes, verdaderas ventanas del alma por donde se puede vislumbrar el fuego del Espíritu que nos invita al mundo espiritual de los misterios divinos, a la unión con el Verbo de Dios. Los ojos, se dice, son los “espejos del alma”, por donde podemos conocer un poco más la fisonomía espiritual de Cristo, son como el límite por donde se funde y se tras- pasa de lo transitorio a lo Eterno, de lo visible a lo Invisible. Más que el ojo humano, debemos descubrir en Jesús una Mirada, la mirada del mismo Dios que se ha revesdo de una carne humana para salvarme; como la mirada al “joven rico” del Evangelio. Su mirada es el sinónimo del “amor primero”, porque me amó antes que yo me convirera a Él, me miró, (podríamos agregar) antes que yo lo mirara, “me amó y se entregó por mi” (Ga 2,20). The Icon of Christ Pantocrator, from the Sacred Monastery of the God-Trodden Mount Sinai, is one of the most profound theological images of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The icon is not just a nice sacred image that adorns churches and homes. Rather, it speaks a theological truth about Our Lord Jesus Christ.

The following descripon by the sisters of the Paracletos Greek Orthodox Monastery in South Carolina captures perfectly the es- sence of this icon:

In which Christ is presented in the act of blessing with His right hand while holding a closed gospel book in His le. […]The most singular as- pect of the work is that the two halves of Christ’s face express diﬀerent emoons: on the side on which He holds the Gospel, His features are hard and severe, represenng Christ as a Judge who sees all, while the expression on the side with the blessing hand is calm and serene, represenng Christ in His role of savior.

The word Pantocrator is Greek, meaning “Ruler of All.” The image expresses the central reality of the Chrisan faith; the Divine Maj- esty of the creator and ruler of all the world, made ﬂesh and therefore visible to us in the person of Christ Jesus our redeemer. This is the oldest known icon of Christ Pantocrator, wrien in the sixth century and preserved in the re- mote monastery of St. Catherine in the Sinai desert. The locaon enabled the image to survive the destrucon of most icons during the iconoclasc era in Byzanne history, (726 to 815 AD.). Applied to the Icon of Christ Sinai, there are two addional ways in which one may understand and interpret the two sides to Christ’s face. The ﬁrst is that the two-dimensional side presents Christ of eternity outside of me and space, whereas the three-dimensional side presents Christ incarnated into the me and space of creaon. The second is that the two-dimensional side conveys Christ’s Divine nature, while the three-dimensional side presents an image of Christ’s human nature, both of which are joined perfectly in one person at the Incarnaon.

“By His Incarnaon, the Word of God, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, chose to become circumscribed in the flesh by becoming man. As man, He could be perceived by other men through their senses. Hence, He could be the prototype for an icon or image. As such, an icon would be the reflecon of Christ, man and God. The icon would thus parcipate in and reflect His nature. Thus any veneraon or honor paid to the image would be paid to the Prototype Himself-in this case, The Word of God”. Luis Antonio de Passalacqua.

In short, the Icon of Christ Sinai reﬂects the Incarnate Christ by imaging in one person a perfect union of both divine nature and human nature, present simultaneously within eternity and within me and space. As such, the Icon of Christ Sinai preserves our tradional understanding of Christology—poinng toward Christ as the true God and true man.
