Davis IERES Occasional Papers, no. 2, May 15, 2019 Transnational History of the Far Right Series Transnational History of the Far Right Series A Collective Research Project led by Marlene Laruelle At a time when global political dynamics seem to be moving in favor of illiberal regimes around the world, this re- search project seeks to fill in some of the blank pages in the contemporary history of the far right, with a particular focus on the transnational dimensions of far-right movements in the broader Europe/Eurasia region. Of all European elections, the one scheduled for May 23-26, 2019, which will decide the composition of the 9th European Parliament, may be the most unpredictable, as well as the most important, in the history of the European Union. Far-right forces may gain unprecedented ground, with polls suggesting that they will win up to one-fifth of the 705 seats that will make up the European parliament after Brexit.1 The outcome of the election will have a profound impact not only on the political environment in Europe, but also on the trans- atlantic and Euro-Russian relationships. -

Blind Spot? Security Narratives and Far-Right Violence in Europe Dr. Arun Kundnani ICCT Research Paper June 2012 Abstract This paper discusses the challenges of countering far‐Right political violence in the wake of the terrorist attack carried out by Anders Behring Breivik in Norway in July 2011. With brief case studies of Britain, the Netherlands, Denmark and Belgium, it argues that classic neo‐Nazi groups are being supplemented by new ‘counter‐jihadist’ far‐Right movements, which use various modes of political action, including participation in elections, street‐based activism and terrorist violence. Building on recent interest among scholars and practitioners in the role of narratives and performativity in counter‐terrorism, this paper argues that official security discourses tend to hinder efforts to counter far‐Right violence and can unwittingly provide opportunities for counter‐jihadists to advance their own narratives. When leaders and officials of Western European governments narrate issues of multiculturalism and radical Islamism in ways that overlap with counter‐jihadist ideology, it suggests a need for reflection on the unintended side‐ effects of their security discourse. The paper concludes with a discussion of how governments can rework their security narratives to oppose far‐Right violence. About the Author Dr. Arun Kundnani was a Visiting Research Fellow at the International Centre for Counter‐Terrorism – The Hague from March to May 2012. He is a former fellow at the Open Society Foundations, New York, and has written widely on race relations, multiculturalism and security. As the mobility towards continental Europe through migration have started to change the demographic balances and as the European Muslims began to be considered as a threat after September 11, new debates came along. Islamophobia, xenophobia and anti- immigrant contexts have developed an exclusion and otherization into a political context and pushed the Muslim minorities into introversion and ethnic and religious ghettos. Some minority groups otherized and pushed out of system with the failure of multiculturalism policies gradually become affected by radical ethnic, religious and ideological movements. Reciprocal bias and distinctions in European countries threaten the social peace and cause societal tensions; and they are being used by nationalist and racist parties to establish a public opinion. The starting point of this research is whether the ‘intercultural and inter-civilization communications and interactions’ which increased highly in the last decades will cause conflict or dialogue? The Muslim Turkish migrants living in Europe as settled immigrants have faced several different problems since the first years of migration. -

Zionism has a story to tell that, when properly understood, has the power to inspire people and peoples to great acts of daring and sacrifice. Zionism tells a simple story: Victimhood is not destiny. A history of marginalization, humiliation, discrimination, persecution, massacres, and even genocide can be transcended. A people, no matter how downtrodden, can find within themselves the power to change their future. The inspirational power of Zionism lay not only in its call to action, but in its vocabulary of human equality, liberty, and dignity. Zionism called upon the Jewish people to take action to achieve their rightful place among the nations as equals—nothing more, nothing less. This was a simple, but compelling, argument: In a world where nations and peoples were increasingly considered to possess a universal right to sovereignty in states of their own, where they could enjoy liberty and dignity, free from the oppressions of empire, the Jewish nation possessed that right as well.
