Puren was known to ONUC to have been a mercenary in 1961. He was a radio navigator. Apprehended by ONUC on 28 August 1961 in accordance 1vith paragraph A-2 of the Security Council resolution of 21 . Transferred to Kamina, but escaped on 31 August 1961. UN possesses a lIDepart du Katangall form issued by Gendarmerie Headquarters (Etat Major, Section G-l) and signed by Capt. De loof for Major De Troyer authorizing Puren I s departure for Durban by UAT on 4 September 1961. Reason for travel given as lIContract rene1ved ­ lt leave . ANTOlNE, Maurice FranGois Eelgian. Lieutenant; born on 11 July 1929 at Waillat (Belgium). Leader of the Groupe mobile Antoine which was operating in North Katanga at the beginning o~ 1961. Served in the Katanga Gendarmerie on a one-year contr~ct at 28,000 frs. monthly. ~pprehended with several other members of his group (Adjt.-Chef Bero, J\djt. Demoulin, f.djt. Goffinet, Adjt. Served at Camp Massart with the rank of Adjutant. Repatriated by OI~C on 17 September 1961. Declared during his interrogation that he wished to remain in the CongQ. ONUC is in possession of a copy of the transfer order dated le May 1961, as well as a copy of the cable infonning headqu~rters, Elisabethville, that he (and Mr. Dubois) had been wounded at Kapona. Repatriated by ONUC on 7 September 1961. Apparently soon returned to Katanga and reported to have left once again on 8 February 1962 along with 88 other "VOlunteers", according to a letter from Mr. Tshombe to the Officer-in-Charge dated 13 February 1962. LIESSE, Lucien

Eelgian, Lieutenant. Born on 15 December 19]6 at Etterbeek, Belgium. First came to the Congo in 1946, and was employed as an accountant (secretaire-ccmptable). From 1 until 31 Ivas a police officer (sous-commissaire) at Albertville. ~fterHards joined the Katanga Gendarmerie as a lieutenant and served as 3 quartermaster at Headquarters. Later moved to Jadotville.

SCHR.AMYIE , Jean

Belgian, Captain. Born on 5 March 1929 at Bruges, Belgium (address in Belgium: rue Haut No. 20, Bruges). Has been in the Congo for 17 years. Recruited for the Katange. Genclarmerie at Elisabethville and served in a groupe mobile in North Ke.tange. under Major Bousquet. Also served under Lieutencmt Chamois (Chalmers) in the latter's groupe mobile E in North Katange. in April-May 1961, and is I .. · S/5053/Add.12/Add.l English Page 11 mention~d ~ a report by Chamois describing the operations along the Mukete Niemba road at that time. Schramme 1vas repatriated by ONUC from Leopoldville to Brussels on 17 September 1961. However, he appears to have soon returned to Katanga as is mentioned in the diary of a mercenary (author unkn01~n) found by the UN Ethiopian troops in the Union Miniere compound at EliEabethville during the hostilities of December 1961. According to this diary, Schramme took part in the blowing up of the bridge over the Lubilash river on the Kasai-Katanga border on 4 November 1961. Later Schramme was listed among the 89 llvolunteers 11 who were supposed to have left Katanga on 8 February 1961, according to a letter from Mr. Tshombe to the Officer-in-Charge dated 13 February 1961. He was, however, reported by mercenaries under UN detention to be playing an important role in Katanga as of September 1962. Also reported by a diplomatic source to be in Katanga as of September 1962.
