17. SAMUEL GUSTAVUS5 NORVELL (WILLIAM4, WILLIAM3, GEORGE2, HUGH1)179 was born 27 Dec 1807 in Lynchburg, Virginia180,181, and died 01 Sep 1871 in Covington, Kenton Co., Kentucky182. He married (1) LELIA ANN BRADFUTE183 21 Jan 1829 in Lynchburg, Virginia184,185,186, daughter of DAVIDSON BRADFUTE and MARIA BYRD. She was born Abt. 1812 in Lynchburg, Virginia187,188, and died Abt. 1843 in Lynchburg, Virginia. He married (2) HENNINGHAM V. REID189 20 Oct 1844 in Lynchburg, Virginia190,191, daughter of WILLIAM REID and CLEMENTINA VENABLE. She was born 06 Jun 1818 in Lynchburg, Virginia192,193,194,195,196, and died 23 Feb 1892 in Covington, Kenton Co., Kentucky197.

Notes for SAMUEL GUSTAVUS NORVELL: It is debatable whether or not Samuel was born in Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky or somewhere in Virginia. The several census records in which he appears give conflicting accounts of the place of his birth. I have been able to place him in Kentucky in the 1850 Census and in it, he is listed as having been born in Virginia. His later documents and burial records say he was born in Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky.

Samuel was shown as a Tobacco Merchant or Tobacco Inspector in the City Directories of Covington, Kentucky. This was probably the connection between his family and Alfred T. Whitteker, who, at times, was a Tobacconist or Tobacco Merchant as well. Alfred probably met his wife, Lucy, through this connection. Samuel was listed as living on 7th Street, east of Greenup in the 1856 City Directory. This is the same street on which daughter, Lucy, and her husband Alfred T. Whitteker lived. There is no way to tell who was living there first, at this point. The 1861 Williams' Directory of Covington gives a more precise ; but still confusing description of this address. For Samuel it is described as "s.s." or south side of 7th "b." or behind Garrard and Greenup. For Alfred and Lucy you are directed to "w.s." or west side of Garrard "b." or behind 7th and 8th. By the time of the 1869 directory, Samuel was living at 331 Garrard Street, so by then, a numbering system had been introduced..

Samuel and his wife had their share of tragedy. They lost three children, Herman, Florence, and Aimee, at the ages of 5 years, 5 years, and 3 years, respectively, to the dreaded scarlet fever. These three deaths occurred within two months of each other.

Lucy A. Norval is the daughter of Samuel by his first wife, Lilia. Where or what happened to Lilia, as well as her maiden name, are unknown at this time. He must have married H.V. abt. 1848, before their first child was born. There is some question in my mind as to whether or not Clement is a child of the first wife or a child of the second wife. I have chosen to show him as a child with the second wife as she was on the scene in the 1850 Census with him only 1 year old.

Samuel's death in 1871 added to his daughter Lucy's grief in a very special way as she lost her husband a few weeks later in the same year. Samuel is buried in Linden Grove Cemetery in Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky.

Covington Journal of 02 Sep 1871, Page 3:

"Samuel Norvell, one of the oldest citizens of Covington, died yesterday morning, at his residence on Scott Street, between fourteenth and fifteenth."

Notes for LELIA ANN BRADFUTE: Lelia was baptized in the St. Paul Episcopal Church in Lynchburg, Virginia on Trinity Sunday in 1826, when she was about 13 years old. This was almost a brand new church at the time. She and Samuel married in this same church.

v. JOHN J. NORVELL, b. Abt. 1839, Lynchburg, Virginia208.

Notes for JOHN J. NORVELL: The only paper of any import which still survives in the Confederate Military File of John Norvell is the Oath of Allegiance Indorsement which states that he was a soldier who voluntarily surrendered and signed the Oath of Allegiance to the United States and so was allowed to return to his home on the 16th of May 1865. William had also signed an Oath of Allegiance, however, there is no evidence of such an oath undertaken by Ottoway.

John's physical description is given as 5 feet 9 1/2 inches tall with fair complexion, light hair, and hazel eyes. His place of residence is given as Kenton County, Kentucky. John's middle initial is given, at different times, as "T", "P", or "J".

After the war, John also moved to Jefferson County, Alabama, as had his brother Ottoway. He settled in Trussville Township; but, never did marry or have any children. He worked as a printer and continued to live by himself.

vi. OTWAY B. NORVELL, b. Abt. 1840, Lynchburg, Virginia209,210; d. Jun 1905, Pee Wee Valley, Kentucky211; m. IDA PULLIAM212, 1870213; b. Dec 1849, Texas213; d. 11 Sep 1931.

Notes for OTWAY B. NORVELL: Otway and his two brothers, John and William, were recruited by Captain Langhorn in Lynchburg, Virginia, to join the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry. Otway and William had first served in the 11th Regiment of the Virginia Infantry together; but, for some unknown reason, had been mustered out in November of 1861. Now, all three brothers were in Duke's 2nd Cavalry and, consequently, all three were taken prisoner in on different days. They all had the supreme luck of finding each other again at Camp Douglas, Illinois. One can only imagine the joyful reunion that surely must have taken place there in the month of August 1863. It must have been bitter-sweet, though, as Camp Douglas was to become the northern equivalent of Andersonville, the south's camp of horror and atrocities. More prisoners died in Camp Douglas than in all of the north's other prisoner of war camps.

Otway was captured at Buffington Island, Ohio on 19 July 1863 then taken, first, to Gallipolis, and transferred to Cincinnati. In Gallipolis he was listed on a descriptive roll as being 23 years old, 5 ft. 11 inches tall, of light complexion with black eyes and brown hair; and having the occupation of "student" with his residence being Covington, Kentucky. It was also stated that he was taken in action. By July 23rd he was on a Prisoner of War roll at Camp Morton of Indianapolis, Indiana. He was transferred 22 Aug 1863 to Camp Douglas at Chicago, Illinois. He would stay here until 13 Feb 1865, when he would be again transferred to Pt. Lookout, Maryland. Within two weeks time, he would be sent to Camp Lee near Richmond, Virginia to be paroled or exchanged.

12 Ancestors and Descendants of Samuel Gustavus Norvell

The Kentucky 2nd Cavalry had the remaining part of their men captured at New Lisbon, Ohio on 26 July 1863. The regiment was not reorganized. So many had been captured at Buffington Island and at New Lisbon, that it was not feasible to reorganize this regiment. The field officers were Colonels Basil W. Duke and John H. Morgan, Lieutenant Colonels James W. Bowles and John B. Hutcheson, and Majors G. W. Morgan and T. B. Webber. The unit had contained men from Kentucky, Texas, Mississippi, and Alabama. It had served in Morgan's Brigade and had been active in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Ohio.

Otway wrote a manuscript of his experiences in Camp Douglas in 1891. This manuscript still exists in the Southern Historical Collection of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (#1921). The Title of the manuscript is simply "Papers, 1864:1891" by Otway B. Norvell (one of the many spellings of his first name). His reason given for writing this account was that he felt that so much had been written regarding the South's horrendous prisoner of war camp, Andersonville, among others, that there needed to be a glimpse into the other side...... the prisoner of war camps of the North.

He represents Camp Douglas was not the harbor of comfort and rest that it had been reported to be; but a place of death by starvation and disease. Often the Union guards wantonly fired into the camp barracks at night and many died as a direct cause of these random shootings. Men were so hungry that, not only did they eat rats "when they could catch them"; but, a small brown and black dog which was accompanying a troop of visitors to the camp was captured, killed, and eaten. There were many, many acts of unbelievable cruelty, such as when a young boy who had been captured ventured over the dead line to get clean snow to melt down for water. Even the guards who were posted to keep watch over the line, recognized what he was doing and decided not to shoot; but, there was one who walked up to him, from behind, and shot him in the back of the head with a pistol, killing him instantly. Unusually cruel punishments were applied for the slightest infraction of the rules; including hanging by the thumbs with the feet off the ground. There had been built a contraption called Morgan's Horse which looked like a saw horse; but with legs about 10-12 feet high. Men were forced to sit astride this thing with buckets of sand or water tied to each foot, forcing them down upon the wood and applying pressure to their testicles, sometimes all day long.

This manuscript brings home the brutality of war to a degree not commonly found. It is complete with illustrations by way of drawings by one R. M. Mather. The work covers over 30 pages, itself, add to that the drawings, which number five, plus there is a copy of the charges which were brought against eight men who had planned to liberate the camp, gain control of munitions, and then attack Chicago, using the liberated prisoners. All in all, it is quite impressive; and really does much to show a spark of the other side of the Civil War story.

Before the war, in 1856, Otway had made application to Westpoint Military Academy. His name appears in an Index of applicants, stating that he applied in 1856, and that he was from Virginia. If he had graduated Westpoint he should have been an officer. He reached the rank of Lieutenant in the 11th Virginia Infantry before he mustered out; but, he resigned this position; and, when he mustered into the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry, he did so as a private again.

The Confederate Veteran Magazine published a tribute to Lieutenant Otway B. Norvell which was written by Rev. J. R. Deering in the Jan-Dec 1905 issue. He stated that Otway had joined the Rifle Grays of Lynchburg just two days before Virginia seceded from the Union. This company was later a part of the 11th Virginia, Company B. With them he fought in the battles of Bull Run and Manassas. He then transferred to the 1st Kentucky Infantry and served with them at Yorktown, Dam No. 1, the Lower Redoubt. When his term of enlistment expired, he mustered out on 01 May 1862. Upon reaching Richmond, he was made 1st Lieutenant and adjutant of the 12th Tennessee Cavalry, taking part in the Kentucky Campaign under Bragg and Kirby Smith. He was engaged at Perryville and Big Hill on the retreat. In Dec 1862 he resigned to join his own people under Gen. John H. Morgan. They invaded the northland; and, on 19 Jul 1863, he was captured near Marietta, Ohio, just a few days before his leader surrendered. When he arrived at Camp Douglas, Illinois, he took part in organizing a conspiracy to escape the camp. Some untoward event caused them to abandon the plan. He was then exchanged on 21 Feb 1865. When he arrived in Richmond, he was sent to the command of Gen. Early. Later, he once again reported to his old commander, Gen. Basil Duke, who was attempting to reorganize his cavalry. After, the surrender of Gen. Lee, he went to North Carolina and Gen. Johnston, and was one of President Davis' bodyguards in the last retreat. He surrendered on 08 May 1865 and walked back to the ruins of the capital city. A stroke of paralysis in 1882 made him helpless and bed-ridden until the end; but he was attended, comforted, and cheered by his faithful, loving wife. He died in the Kentucky Confederate Home in Pee Wee Valley in June 1905. He lies in the Confederate Lot in Cave Hill among the men with whom he fought.

After the war, in 1870, he had married Ida Pulliam and relocated to Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama, where he appears with his wife in the 1900 US Census records. According to this census,

13 Ancestors and Descendants of Samuel Gustavus Norvell they had two children born of this marriage, both of which were deceased by 1900.

The beginning of the year 1886 brought to Otway the decision to apply for admittance to the Ex-Confederate Soldiers Home at Richmond, Virginia. Exactly what it was that influenced this decision was not brought out in the application process; but, there were some letters which not only tell of his great service during the war; but, of the esteem with which his commanding officer regarded him. There are two particularly poignant letters from Col. Basil W. Duke, who had been made a General before the close of the war, and now was an attorney in Louisville, Kentucky.

B.W.Duke Attorney at Law Louisville. Feby. 27th 1886 5th and Court Place

My dear Otway

On my return home from Frankfort I find your letter of the 24th inst. I enclose such a certificate as I presume will be required. If it be not in form, return it so that I may correct it. I take it for granted that the mere statement of your having been a Confederate Soldier would be sufficient for the purposes of your application-- but I cannot omit a testimonial to your worth which is so heartily deserved.

I have no doubt that you will find the Home a pleasant place to remain during an illness from which I sincerely hope you will recover. I need not say that you have my warmest sympathies. Write me if I can do anything for you. When you start let me know--some days in advance--I will ask Gen. Eccols to give me a R.R. pass for you from Lexington to Richmond. I trust that we will have you with us again, sound and well.

Very truly your friend,

B. W. Duke

When I wrote the above I had not noticed the address at the head of your letter. I thought you at Covington. I do not therefore know which route you will take to Richmond. Let me know.

ON THE SAME LETTERHEAD & DATED THE SAME DAY:

I hereby certify that I know Mr. Otway B. Norvell, applicant for admission to this Confederate Soldiers' Home at Richmond, Virginia, very intimately, and know that he was a soldier in the service of the Confederate States, being a member of the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry regiment of said Confederate States Army.

I will further state Mr. Norvell was a gallant and faithful Confederate, doing his whole duty bravely and cheerfully, earning the esteem and confidence of his comrades and officers, and that he bears a most excellent and enviable reputation with all who served with him. It affords me cordial pleasure to testify in behalf of one, whom I regard as not only one of the best soldiers, but also one of the best men I have ever known. I commanded the regiment to which he belonged for more than a year.

Basil W. Duke Formerly being Genl. C.S.A.

AND HERE I PRESENT OTWAY'S COVER LETTER WHICH ACCOMPANIED HIS APPLICATION:

Belknap Dallas Co. Mch. 1886

Dear Mr. Williams

Herewith I enclose to you the application for admission to the Home which if you think properly made out please deliver to the proper officers. I have also enclosed the certificate of General Duke under whom I served as Colonel of my regiment and then Commander of the brigade from the Spring of 1863 to the surrender in '65 except the nineteen months that I was a prisoner of war. This includes only about half my service however. I left Covington in Mch. of '61 before any troops from Kentucky & enlisted in the 11th Virginia at Lynchburg in April following and served with it until Dec when I was transferred to the 1st

14 Ancestors and Descendants of Samuel Gustavus Norvell

Kentucky, Col. Taylor commanding. This regiment was disbanded on the peninsula in the Spring of '62. I was then promoted to a Lieutenantry, and assigned to duty as adjutant of the 12th Tennessee Cav. This position I resigned and joined Col. Duke's regiment (the 2nd Kentucky Cav.) as a private. It may not be necessary to state all this. I was not disabled in the service but I hope that fact will not count against my admission. I believe that under favorable circumstances I will recover my health. If the application is unsuccessful please get if possible Gen'l. Duke's letter and certificate and return to me.

Yours very truly

O.B. Norvell

Note: According to the other papers in this application, which is available at the Library of Virginia, Otway B. Norvell was accepted to this Home. How long he stayed here is unknown.....or even if he ever regained any portion of his health. When he died in 1905, he was a patient in another Confederate Soldiers' Home in Pee Wee Valley, Kentucky. He is buried in the Cave Hill Cemetery, CS Lot 267 1/2, grave no. 47, at Louisville, Kentucky with many of the men he fought with.

Notes for WILLIAM DAVIDSON NORVELL: William was also a Private in Company B of the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry. He was captured at Salineville, Ohio on the 26th of July 1863. He was transferred to Camp Chase, Ohio. on 22 Aug 1863 and sent on to Camp Douglas, Illinois, arriving there while it was still the month of August. He also was transferred to Pt. Lookout, Maryland 13 Feb 1865; and, from there sent on to Richmond, Virginia and Camp Lee to be paroled from there the 28th of February 1865.

His physical description is given as being 5 foot 6 inches tall with fair complexion, light hair, and blue eyes. Place of residence is recorded as Kenton County, Kentucky.

After the war, William married Maria Waller and went to live in Louisville, Kentucky. There they lived at 1417 West Chestnut Street and he worked as a clerk for the L. C. & L. Railroad. I could only locate them in the 1920 Census there, living with Maria Waller's nephew, Granville Waller; and, in the 1886 and 1890 Louisville City Directories. It is unknown at this time whether or not they had any children. William is buried in Cave Hill Cemetery, CS Lot 267 1/2, grave no. 73, at Louisville, Kentucky.

Notes for LELIA C. NORVELL: The only Lucy C. Norvell I could find appeared in, first, the 1910 US Census for Richmond , VA living as a lodger in a boarding house. She was about 65 years of age, single, and born in Virginia. She appeared next in the 1920 US Census for Richmond, VA as an inmate in the "Home for Confederate Women". Both of these establishments were on East Grace Street in Richmond City. She was now represented as being 72 years of age, single, and born in Virginia. The only other trace of her had been in the 1892 Covington Kentucky City Directory where she was listed as living at 1051 Scott Street with the occupation of "seamstress". I am sure that the entry in the Covington City Directory of 1892 is truly her; but, I am not sure of the later Census records. No records of her death were found in Covington.

Notes for FLORENCE ARTHUR NORVELL: Florence Norvell's death record states that he was just five years old when he died also of scarlet fever, the same way his two siblings did two months before. The record gives the gender of this child as "male"; but, I believe, due to the name that he may be actually female.

21. LUCY A.6 NORVELL (SAMUEL GUSTAVUS5, WILLIAM4, WILLIAM3, GEORGE2, HUGH1) was born Abt. 1830 in Lynchburg, Virginia260,261,262, and died 26 Mar 1899 in Covington, Kenton Co., Kentucky263,264. She married ALFRED T. WHITTEKER 11 Dec 1850 in Covington, Kenton County, KY265, son of WILLIAM WHITTEKER and PHILENA COBB. He was born 22 Sep 1817 in Charleston, Kanawha, VA266, and died 19 Oct 1871 in Covington, Kenton Co., Kentucky266.

Notes for LUCY A. NORVELL: Lucy lived at 1374 Scott Street in Covington, Kentucky when she died. Her death certificate states that her mother's name was Lilia. Her death notice in the Cincinnati Enquirer of 27 Mar 1899 described her as the "estimable mother of Bart Whittaker". She and her daughters, Lucy, Dora, and Imogene lived together, after her husband, Alfred, died. They are shown living together in the city directories of 1882, 1892, and 1894. Alfred and Bart also lived with them in 1882 and 1892. In the 1880 US Census of Covington, Kenton Co., KY, Willifred was also living with them. By 1882, she was gone. Lucy also died of tuberculosis. She was cremated; but her ashes were interred at Linden Grove Cemetery with her husband and little son, Norval.

Notes for ALFRED T. WHITTEKER: Not much is known of Alfred Whitteker; but, in 1839, he became Deputy Sheriff to the Sheriff, Daniel Ruffner, as evidenced by his bond which was filed with the Kanawha County Court. So, he was still living in Kanawha County at this time. In 1841 he is included in the Kanawha County Court Records on a list of school masters. There is no record of a marriage or children for Alfred in Kanawha County.

When the mid 1840s arrived, Alfred was living in Burlington, Iowa, where his sister, Philena and her husband and family lived. He appears in the city directories there as a grocer. He would not remain here long, however.

By 1850, he was in Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky, where he would marry and raise a family. He married Lucy A. Norval (alternate spelling NORVELL). They had nine children; five boys and four girls. Two addresses associated with his family in Covington, through the Covington City Directories, were 28 East 4th Street and on 7th and 8th, east of Greenup. He was noted in the directories as being either a "tobacconist" or a "clerk".

The Covington Journal announced in the issue of 01 Dec 1860, page 2, that Alfred would run in the January city election for City Clerk. He later became the Clerk of the School Board in Covington and still held that post until his death.

He died in 1871 of "consumption" and is buried in the Linden Grove Cemetery in Covington. The Covington Journal printed an obituary which stated that his funeral, held on 21 Oct 1871, was with the rights of the Masonic Fraternity, of which he was a member.

Children of LUCY NORVELL and ALFRED WHITTEKER are: i. NORVAL WILLIAM7 WHITTEKER, b. 04 Feb 1852, Covington, Kenton Co., Kentucky268,269,270; d. 12 May 1860, Covington, Kenton Co., Kentucky271.

Notes for NORVAL WILLIAM WHITTEKER: A parent's worst nightmare occurred in the family of Alfred T. Whitteker and Lucy Norval. Their first child, Norval William Whitteker, was to suffer in the worst possible way; and, finally die at the age of 8 years. He is also buried at Linden Grove Cemetery with his parents.

Several newspaper articles covered the progression of this story, eleven days, from the accident which took place on 01 May 1860, until the child's death on 12th of May. Little Willie, as he was called, apparently disobeyed his mother and went to play on the railroad tracks near the trains. He attempted to catch hold and board a passenger car which was backing down the tracks to the depot. He missed his footing, fell, and was dragged under the engine, the wheels of which passed over, above and below his right knee, crushing and mangling the leg in the most awful manner. Six hours later, the doctor was forced to amputate his leg from the hip. We do well to remember that this was in 1860, before the Civil War; and, before anesthesia. Just hours before the amputation, he told his maternal grandfather: "Get my coffin, Grandpa, for I am going to die now. I've been a wicked boy; but, God, for Christ's sake, has forgiven my sins, and now I am going to Heaven. If I had not disobeyed my mother, this would not have happened to me. Now, I want to die and be with my dear Jesus." He even reproved those who lamented his fate and hoped that he would live, saying that it was wrong to wish for him to live , for he might grow up to be a wicked man; and, it was best for him to die now while he felt that he was prepared for death. He only wished to live long enough for his absent father to reach home.

Source: Covington Journal 26 May 1860

After the amputation, it at first seemed to be healing well; and, that the child would recover. However, back then, not knowing if due to loss of blood, infection, or not so obvious other injuries, he then began to decline, not being able to eat and retain his food. In the end, he closed his eyes and died peacefully. All this suffering and horror took place in the home. It was truly different in those days. People lived more closely to life and death.

Notes for IMOGENE WHITTEKER: From the Kentucky Post 01 Oct 1907, Page 2:

"Miss Imogene Whittaker, formerly of this city, died Sunday night at the residence of her sister, Mrs. Bradberry Bedinger, at Walton, and, according to her request, her remains were cremated at the Cincinnati Crematory this afternoon. Miss Whittaker was a prominent worker in the Madison Street Presbyterian Church."

Notes for ALFRED T. WHITTEKER: Alfred, Jr. moved first to Victoria Texas, where he was General Secretary of the Y.M.C.A. His letter of resignation was published in The Weekly Advocate there on 01 Aug 1903. The letter stated that he was resigning his position to accept another position in Galveston, Texas, where he must have then removed himself to.

The San Antonio Daily Light of San Antonio, Texas of 08 Jun 1905 published a notice of a divorce awarded to "Kate Whitaker" from "Alfred Whitaker". It states that Kate D'Avenport was married to Alfred Whitaker in Houston on 18 Jul 1896; and lived with him together as man and wife until 12 Apr 1902, when he abandoned her and discontinued supporting her. Judgement was rendered in her favor; and, since she was allowed to resume the use of her maiden name, it may be deducted that there were no children born of this union. I have no definite proof that this was the same Alfred; but I do note that it fits together well with his time line of moving around the state of Texas

Finally, on 24 Mar 1912, another article about Alfred Jr. was published in the Cleburne Morning Review of Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas. This piece expounded upon his great talent as both a director of their choir and his ability as an artist. It was stated that he could keep children mesmerized and interested for hours as he quickly drew pictures in chalk as he talked. They dubbed him "the chalk talker" and said that he was one of the best leaders of song in the whole South; saying also that it was rare that both of these talents should be visited upon the same man. He was the leader of the Choir which was working in the Revival Meetings of Evangelist Lockett Adair, who had been converting people in the Denton, Texas area since the Christmas season of 1911. Adair was a well known Evangelist and Preacher who had converted more than 500 people since the start of the Revival Meetings here. Alfred, himself, made many friends in the area and it was stated that he would not soon be forgotten.

I have not been able to pinpoint his place of residence at this time, in 1912, nor in any subsequent US Census Records. If he truly were married to Kate; and, was unaware that he had been divorced, he may have had a reason to want to remain anonymous. He also cannot be found in the 1900 or 1910 US Census for Texas, although it is obvious that he was still very much alive. Before moving to Texas, there was no difficulty in finding him in the US Census for Kentucky. He was living with his mother in the 1880 Census for Covington, Kentucky. There being no census for 1890, he does appear in the City Directories up to 1892, so could very well have moved to Texas before 1896.

22. CLEMENT REID6 NORVELL (SAMUEL GUSTAVUS5, WILLIAM4, WILLIAM3, GEORGE2, HUGH1)281 was born Abt. 1849 in Virginia282, and died in New Orleans, Louisiana283. He married MATTIE CULBERTSON284. She was born in Covington, Kenton Co., Kentucky284, and died in New Orleans, Louisiana285.

Notes for CLEMENT REID NORVELL: Clement volunteered for service in the C.S.A. at the age of 50. He, his wife, and their only child all died of yellow fever in New Orleans in the last great epidemic.

23. BARTLETT7 WHITTEKER (LUCY A.6 NORVELL, SAMUEL GUSTAVUS5, WILLIAM4, WILLIAM3, GEORGE2, HUGH1) was born 18 Jul 1857 in Covington, Kenton Co., Kentucky288,289,290, and died 14 May 1921 in Dayton, Montgomery Co., Ohio290. He married NANCY STONE291 1897, daughter of JOHN STONE and SARAH MCDONALD. She was born 13 Oct 1866 in Urbana, Ohio292,293,294, and died 25 Jun 1947 in Urbana, Ohio294.

Notes for BARTLETT WHITTEKER: The birth records of Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky show a James Whittaker born to A. Whittaker and (?) Noel. This has to be the birth record of Bartlett as it is on the exact same day as Bartlett was born. Whether or not they decided to rename him or if Bartlett or James are a middle name is unknown.

It is interesting to note that Bart shows his father as being born in Massachusetts, according to the 1900 US Census of Covington, Kenton Co., Kentucky. Alfred Whitteker, Sr was not born in Massachusetts himself; but, his own father, William Whitteker, was born there. I think this is just one more piece of evidence to show that Alfred was the son of William. Both of Alfred Sr's parents were from Massachusetts and must have had New England accents. Alfred Sr may also have picked up this accent from his parents. He may also have said that his family was from Massachusetts and Bart may have picked up on that and thought that his father was from there as well.

Bart moved to Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio sometime after 1900 and before his son, John was born in 1902. He worked there as a wholesale druggist. He is buried, with his wife, in the Oak Dale Cemetery in Urbana, Ohio.

24. WILLIFRED7 WHITTEKER (LUCY A.6 NORVELL, SAMUEL GUSTAVUS5, WILLIAM4, WILLIAM3, GEORGE2, HUGH1) was born Abt. 1863 in Covington, Kenton Co., Kentucky299, and died Aft. 1920300. She married BRADBURY CILLEY BEDINGER301 31 Aug 1887, son of DAVID BEDINGER and ELIZABETH CILLEY. He was born 18 Aug 1866 in Walton, Boone Co., Kentucky301,302, and died 07 Jan 1950 in Kern, California303.

Notes for WILLIFRED WHITTEKER: Willie married Bradbury C. Bedinger and moved to California. They had two daughters: Lucy and Elizabeth Norvell Bedinger. In 1920 Willie registered to vote as a Democrat. She was living at 1947 Oregon Street in Berkeley. In the US Census that same year, she claimed to be a widow. However, her husband did not die until 1950, so they probably were separated. It was not unusual in those times for a woman to claim to be a widow, rather than separated or divorced. She was living then with her daughter Elizabeth Norvell and son-in-law, Herbert A. Underwood.
