DEAR FRIENDS …

Our Benefice made it into the Church Times (national church newspaper) in May! It was a great news story, based on a wonderful project led by resident, Rick Senley. Over the last year and a half, Rick has spent time in the village taking photos of residents and scenes, and has created a wonderful set of images, entitled “A Year in Lockdown”. His website (https://ricksenley.wixsite.com/ayearinlockdowngui-1) describes the project: Rick “spent the last year photographing villagers - from the newborns to a 100 year- old and all ages in between, joined by a tortoise, a duck and several bees.” The photographs are stunning and express something that we have seen in all of our villages through this time – community connections, care for our neighbours and the beauty of creation. As we look hopefully forwards, there is a lot to give thanks for, even in this very difficult time that we are living through. We are encouraging a season of thankfulness as we move into the coming weeks. Who are you especially grateful for over the last year? Who has made a difference to you? Who would you like to say thank you to, for their support, humour, phone calls, meals,…? Perhaps you might even find an opportunity to say a direct thank you to them? Rick’s photos will be on show in Guiting Power Church towards the end of July, for you to visit and enjoy, and there will be a book to follow too! Following Catherine’s ordination as a priest on Saturday 26 June, we are planning a Benefice celebration on Sunday 4th July, which will include Catherine celebrating communion for the first time. We are hoping to have refreshments available at Lower Slaughter Church from 4pm, and then a service at 6pm. Do pop in for a bit, or stay for the whole time! With love and prayers, Katrina, Sue and Catherine

With the glorious weather we’ve been enjoying and all the progress we’re making on our road map towards opening up the country again, I’m really looking forward to summer! I can’t wait to be able to see people face to face around our wonderful benefice and take time to enjoy the beauty of God’s creation. Traditionally in church life, Embers cards are sent in the lead up to ordinations. Worded asking for prayers for those being ordained, I’d love to share mine with you all (see below). On June 26th I will be ordained Priest, and I’d like to thank you all for all of your encouragement and prayers as we look forward to the happy day. Catherine x

We were very sorry to hear recently that Rev’d John Fieldgate has died. John was Rector of this Benefice until 2001. He took ill with a stroke quite suddenly and passed away on 20th April. His step-son was visiting the area and passed on the news. Please do share with others who would remember him, and do remember John’s wife, Gill in your prayers.

PRAYER LINES … We have set up a prayer network – a group of people who are willing to receive any requests for prayer and to pray for anyone in need. It is set up as a simple email group, co-ordinated by Jean Bird, and an email is sent to all the ‘pray-ers’ asking them to remember a particular person when there is a need. If you would like to be remembered in prayer, please contact Jean at [email protected] or Rev’d Sue Pestell on [email protected].

NEWS FROM … GUITING POWER You may recall praying for my brother-in-law, Bob Babbage, on our recent Zoom Services. On Good Friday Bob had a severe heart attack, was taken to the Bristol Heart Hospital and straight into intensive care, where he remained for 3 weeks mostly in a coma. After a few days in Intensive Care, Bob's heart stopped on three occasions. Each time he was resuscitated, the family were summoned for his farewell - he was on a heart machine, his kidneys had failed, he is Type 1 diabetic - it was assumed the end. Somehow Bob kept going, then another set-back … he developed sepsis, requiring more medication. Whilst Bob was in hospital a large number of worshippers in this Benefice and beyond set about praying for him. This was increased weekly by participants in our Zoom services, the prayer became intense. The Hospital Doctors could not understand how Bob remained alive, what was it? I believe it was the Power Of Prayer. What else could it have been, there was no reasonable explanation. Every day Bob slowly improved. After 3 weeks he came off all the life giving apparatus and a week later he was home. He continues to recover, it will be a long job, but he’s now beginning to potter about the garden. Please may I thank all you good people for your depth of prayer over a sustained period, prayer that appears to have allowed a minor miracle. According to the Medical Staff at Bristol, it was a minor miracle! Mike Edwards

GARDEN OPEN SUNDAY 4th JULY 10 - 5 pm

The Garden at Kirkham Farm, Upper Slaughter (GL54 2JS) is open in aid of Upper Slaughter church on Sunday 4th July from 10am to 5pm. Do come and have a relaxed walk around the garden and enjoy our amazing views. There are large herbaceous borders planted for both summer colour and all year round interest. A terrace, gravel gardens and raised veg beds surround the house. * Home-made teas and plants. * Plenty of parking and the majority of the garden is wheelchair accessible. Looking forward to seeing you.

NAUNTON Naunton’s lockdown feels rather looser at last! It’s been great to enjoy being back in the church building for some live services over the last few weeks and we’re looking forward to a gradual return to the full monty (hymn singing!) whenever it is safe to do so. Hopefully the coffee shop will also re-start sometime soon. We have already re-started the monthly St. Andrew’s cinema (although we are holding it in the village hall for the time being, to be socially-distanced, rather than in the church). Plus weekly yoga and table-tennis (not combined!). There are plans for more social events if restrictions allow and we’re all looking forward to getting to know quite a few new faces in the village. TEMPLE GUITING What a joy to write this sitting in the sunshine, with the sound of swallows overhead. The Cotswold countryside is looking superb in its early summer glory of blossom and wildflowers. So it was fascinating and fun to take part in the Churches Count on Nature last week in St Mary’s churchyard. There are so many different species of wildflowers in the churchyard now, one of my favourites being the vivid orange Fox and Cubs, a member of the Hawkweed family. If you have some time to sit in the churchyard in this sunny weather you should hear grasshoppers in the long grass. We were able to enjoy the sights and sounds of the countryside during our outdoor Taize service last Sunday evening. This lovely, simple style of service with periods of silence for reflection is so relaxing and refreshing and a beautiful way to feel in touch with all creation.

On the subject of creation, it was delightful to see the wonderfully creative exhibition of artwork in St Mary’s done by the children from Temple Guiting School. It was so bright and imaginative and really gave a sense of emerging from lockdown. Although we will have to wait a little longer for restrictions to be fully lifted, we are beginning to plan some events in the village and in St Mary’s. An outdoor Safari Supper is planned for Saturday 14 th August and we hope to run a series of events in the autumn, including ‘Soup and a Story’ and a musical evening with harp and voice. Details to follow! Ali Clifton Barnard

TEMPLE GUITING CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHOOL 2021 Our year started in the most unusual way – we had 1 day at school then lockdown 3 – we managed to switch to remote learning within 12 hours and so our pupils woke up to the news they weren’t going to school but their work was back on the website! We are so proud of all the work that was set and how most children thrived during the weeks at home or were in our Key-worker bubble at school. We had a major focus on mental health and wellbeing – even having a wellbeing day with 13 different activities ranging from sport challenges to biscuit making, mocktails to facials, art to photography, forest school activities and gardening – it was a fantastic day. On our return to school we did a whole school project on a book called “Here we are” by Oliver Jeffers. It had a theme of looking after each other and Planet Earth. We did creative writing, Science, Geography and Art. It was a fantastic start back in school. Recycle, repurpose, reuse - Art project We had a large oversupply of plastic visors that were not of any use to use to us in school. So our Art teacher had a fantastic idea to use them as a basis for our whole school art project. We based our ideas on the wonder of creation and the song “Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong. Everyone had a plain clear mask and then they could use paint, feathers, collage materials to create an animal that they enjoy learning about. They designed their masks, chose materials and then got creative!! We were amazed at the result. We all walked down to St Mary’s and then created an exhibition so all our parents could see the masks in a Covid safe way.

Sponsored line dance We learned 4 new dances, practised, laughed and got more in time with the beat each time we tried. It was such a fun way to end the term and we want to buy new goalposts and renew the playground markings with the money raised.

LOWER SLAUGHTER What a pleasure it is to write this again as we all emerge from Covid-19. We thank God here at St Mary’s that we have all got safely through this pandemic, but we’re sad to report the death of two of our parishioners earlier this year – Robin Horlock and Janet Barber. We thank God for the long and wonderful lives they enjoyed. We have all enjoyed our weekly Zoom services and catching up with our friends in the Benefice, and now it is a pleasure to hold services in our church buildings. For me, the most memorable one we have had this year was our Easter service held outside in the precinct as we could worship socially-distanced and sing our joyful Easter hymns. We are all now looking forward to slowly returning to normal and once again coming together as a church family. Wishing everyone a joyful summer and hopefully a time of holidays and catching up with family and friends. Marion Marshall
