It was a great news story, based on a wonderful project led by Guiting Power resident, Rick Senley. Over the last year and a half, Rick has spent time in the village taking photos of residents and scenes, and has created a wonderful set of images, entitled “A Year in Lockdown”. His website (https://ricksenley.wixsite.com/ayearinlockdowngui-1) describes the project: Rick “spent the last year photographing villagers - from the newborns to a 100 year- old and all ages in between, joined by a tortoise, a duck and several bees.” The photographs are stunning and express something that we have seen in all of our villages through this time – community connections, care for our neighbours and the beauty of creation. As we look hopefully forwards, there is a lot to give thanks for, even in this very difficult time that we are living through. We are encouraging a season of thankfulness as we move into the coming weeks. Who are you especially grateful for over the last year? Who has made a difference to you? Who would you like to say thank you to, for their support, humour, phone calls, meals,…? Perhaps you might even find an opportunity to say a direct thank you to them? Rick’s photos will be on show in Guiting Power Church towards the end of July, for you to visit and enjoy, and there will be a book to follow too! Following Catherine’s ordination as a priest on Saturday 26 June, we are planning a Benefice celebration on Sunday 4th July, which will include Catherine celebrating communion for the first time. We are hoping to have refreshments available at Lower Slaughter Church from 4pm, and then a service at 6pm. Do pop in for a bit, or stay for the whole time! With love and prayers, Katrina, Sue and Catherine With the glorious weather we’ve been enjoying and all the progress we’re making on our road map towards opening up the country again, I’m really looking forward to summer! I can’t wait to be able to see people face to face around our wonderful benefice and take time to enjoy the beauty of God’s creation. Traditionally in church life, Embers cards are sent in the lead up to ordinations. Worded asking for prayers for those being ordained, I’d love to share mine with you all (see below). On June 26th I will be ordained Priest, and I’d like to thank you all for all of your encouragement and prayers as we look forward to the happy day. Catherine x DIARY DATES … We have two further Annual Parochial Church Meetings to come: - in Upper Slaughter, at 6pm on Monday 26 th July, in the church - in Naunton, at 7pm on Wednesday 28 th July, in the church. John was Rector of this Benefice until 2001. He took ill with a stroke quite suddenly and passed away on 20th April. His step-son was visiting the area and passed on the news. Please do share with others who would remember him, and do remember John’s wife, Gill in your prayers. PRAYER LINES … We have set up a prayer network – a group of people who are willing to receive any requests for prayer and to pray for anyone in need. It is set up as a simple email group, co-ordinated by Jean Bird, and an email is sent to all the ‘pray-ers’ asking them to remember a particular person when there is a need. If you would like to be remembered in prayer, please contact Jean at [email protected] or Rev’d Sue Pestell on [email protected]. NEWS FROM … GUITING POWER You may recall praying for my brother-in-law, Bob Babbage, on our recent Zoom Services. On Good Friday Bob had a severe heart attack, was taken to the Bristol Heart Hospital and straight into intensive care, where he remained for 3 weeks mostly in a coma. After a few days in Intensive Care, Bob's heart stopped on three occasions. Each time he was resuscitated, the family were summoned for his farewell - he was on a heart machine, his kidneys had failed, he is Type 1 diabetic - it was assumed the end. Somehow Bob kept going, then another set-back … he developed sepsis, requiring more medication. Whilst Bob was in hospital a large number of worshippers in this Benefice and beyond set about praying for him. This was increased weekly by participants in our Zoom services, the prayer became intense. The Hospital Doctors could not understand how Bob remained alive, what was it? I believe it was the Power Of Prayer. What else could it have been, there was no reasonable explanation. Every day Bob slowly improved. After 3 weeks he came off all the life giving apparatus and a week later he was home. He continues to recover, it will be a long job, but he’s now beginning to potter about the garden. Please may I thank all you good people for your depth of prayer over a sustained period, prayer that appears to have allowed a minor miracle. According to the Medical Staff at Bristol, it was a minor miracle! Mike Edwards GARDEN OPEN SUNDAY 4th JULY 10 - 5 pm The Garden at Kirkham Farm, Upper Slaughter (GL54 2JS) is open in aid of Upper Slaughter church on Sunday 4th July from 10am to 5pm. Do come and have a relaxed walk around the garden and enjoy our amazing views. There are large herbaceous borders planted for both summer colour and all year round interest. A terrace, gravel gardens and raised veg beds surround the house. * Home-made teas and plants. * Plenty of parking and the majority of the garden is wheelchair accessible. Looking forward to seeing you. NAUNTON Naunton’s lockdown feels rather looser at last! It’s been great to enjoy being back in the church building for some live services over the last few weeks and we’re looking forward to a gradual return to the full monty (hymn singing!) whenever it is safe to do so. Hopefully the coffee shop will also re-start sometime soon. We have already re-started the monthly St. Andrew’s cinema (although we are holding it in the village hall for the time being, to be socially-distanced, rather than in the church). Plus weekly yoga and table-tennis (not combined!). There are plans for more social events if restrictions allow and we’re all looking forward to getting to know quite a few new faces in the village.
