  • Parasites — Excavating the Spectravideo Compumate
ghosts ; replicants ; parasites — Excavating the Spectravideo CompuMate These are the notes I used for my final presentation in the summer Media Archaeology Class, alongside images I used as slides. As such, they’re quite provisional, and once I have some time to hammer them into more coherent thoughts, I’ll update this post accordingly! So this presentation is about articulating and beginning the work of theorizing what I’m provisionally calling “computational parasites.” This is provisional because I don’t particularly like the term myself but I figured it would be good to give it a shorthand so I don’t have to be overvague or verbose about these objects and practices throughout this presentation. As most of you know, I came to this class with a set of research questions about a particular hack of the SNES game Super Mario World, wherein a YouTube personality was able to basically terraform the console original into playing, at least in form although we can talk about content, the iPhone game Flappy Bird. This video playing behind me is that hack. This hack is evocative for me for the way it’s 1) really fucking weird, in terms of pushing hardware and software to their limits, and 2) begins to help me think through ideas of the lifecycle of software objects, to pilfer a phrase from a Ted Chiang novella, and how these lifecycles are caught up in infrastructures of nostalgia, supply chains, and different kinds of materiality. But as fate would have it, I haven’t spent that much time with this hack this week because I got entranced by a different, just as weird object: the Spectravideo CompuMate.

  • The Gamification of Digital Gaming – Video Game Competitions and High Score Tables As a Prehistory of E-Sports in Finland in the 1980S and Early 1990S
The Gamification of Digital Gaming – Video Game Competitions and High Score Tables as a Prehistory of E-Sports in Finland in the 1980s and Early 1990s Petri Saarikoski, Jaakko Suominen University of Turku Finland [email protected], [email protected] Markku Reunanen Aalto University Finland [email protected] Abstract: The aim of this paper is to examine the “prehistory” of E-sports from the Finnish perspective. In the context of the GamiFIN conference, we approach E-sports as a gamified form of video gaming. In particular, we study the early Finnish game championships of the 1980s and the early 1990s as well as the high score lists of Finnish computer and video game magazines. We ask the question: how did these publications and activities construct video gaming as a socially-experienced competitive practice? In addition, we seek answers to the following questions: Who were the early video game contestants? How was competitive gaming presented in media? What kind of rules were defined for the contests? How was cheating dealt with? Keywords: Competitive gaming, game history, e-sports, high score tables, Pac-Man 1. Introduction Academic research on E-sports has focused on competitive game playing as a contemporary popular cultural phenomenon. The studies have touched upon, for instance, questions on game playing and tactics, comparisons between E-sports and traditional sports consumers’ behavior, as well as other activities revolving around E-sports. (Hamari & Sjöblom 2017.) The studies often briefly mention the history of competitive gaming and typically date its roots back to the activities from the mid or late 1990s that took place in the US, South Korea, UK, and other countries, in relation to different online game genres and the rising interest towards competitive gaming (e.g.

  • You've Seen the Movie, Now Play The
“YOU’VE SEEN THE MOVIE, NOW PLAY THE VIDEO GAME”: RECODING THE CINEMATIC IN DIGITAL MEDIA AND VIRTUAL CULTURE Stefan Hall A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2011 Committee: Ronald Shields, Advisor Margaret M. Yacobucci Graduate Faculty Representative Donald Callen Lisa Alexander © 2011 Stefan Hall All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ronald Shields, Advisor Although seen as an emergent area of study, the history of video games shows that the medium has had a longevity that speaks to its status as a major cultural force, not only within American society but also globally. Much of video game production has been influenced by cinema, and perhaps nowhere is this seen more directly than in the topic of games based on movies. Functioning as franchise expansion, spaces for play, and story development, film-to-game translations have been a significant component of video game titles since the early days of the medium. As the technological possibilities of hardware development continued in both the film and video game industries, issues of media convergence and divergence between film and video games have grown in importance. This dissertation looks at the ways that this connection was established and has changed by looking at the relationship between film and video games in terms of economics, aesthetics, and narrative. Beginning in the 1970s, or roughly at the time of the second generation of home gaming consoles, and continuing to the release of the most recent consoles in 2005, it traces major areas of intersection between films and video games by identifying key titles and companies to consider both how and why the prevalence of video games has happened and continues to grow in power.

  • Atari 2600 Label Variations
Atari 2600 Label Variations This Atari 2600 label list is a compilation of input from many collectors in the field. A lot of hard work has been given by these collectors. You know who you are, and are too many to list. I thank you for everything you’ve done. Since this list is a joint effort, it will be available for all to use. It is a shame that when you input something, you are not fit to use it. So make a copy for yourself or ask me for one. I tell you to do this, so the list does not vanish in case something ever happens to me or my website. To update this list on my website, contact me at [email protected]. I will try and correct any mistakes and add any new info as I come across it. I’ve compiled a new and improved list from the one you’ve seen throughout the years. I’ve also made it much simpler to use. Any questions or comments, just contact me. I’m always on the Atari Age website as Philflound and that is also my AIM name. Rarity is going to be based on the label variation of the cartridge, not the game itself. There are many websites and guides that give the rarity of the carts, so it is just duplicate info you don’t need. I am giving rarity 3 grades along with a (?) grade. There may be more than one grade for variations. For example, Combat has 26 variations listed at this time.
