Head Coach Alan Major Fourth Season

Alan Major is in his fourth season as the 49ers head coach. The 49ers have improved their overall and con- ference wins totals in each of his first three seasons at Charlotte. Year one saw Major doing his best MacGyver impersonation, piece together a season that included wins over #7 Tennessee, at Georgia Tech and vs. Xavier. He did so with more than a shoestring and some paper clips, however. There was no lack of fight or imagination in a team that had as few as six scholarship players and played 29 of 30 games with eight scholarship players or less. The win over #7/#7 Tennessee gave the 49ers a win over a top 20 team for the fourth straight year. It was one of just three Top 10 wins by an Atlantic 10 team. The win at Georgia Tech, a double overtime thriller, was one of the team’s school-record overtime contests. The win over Xavier handed the A-10 regular-season champs their lone A-10 regular-season loss. During that first year, Major signed a Top 10 recruiting class among non-BCS schools, according to ESPN Senior Recruiting analyst Dave Telep. Year two of the Major era, the 49ers improved their overall and Atlantic 10 record. Charlotte defeated cross-county rival and 2012 NCAA Tournament participant Davidson. Pierria Henry, a member of the 49ers heralded recruiting class, earned Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team honors. Year three of the Major era, the 49ers captured the Great Alaska Shootout title and set the school-record for best start at 9-0. The 49ers defeated #10 Butler on the road as well. The 49ers won 21 games which marked the program’s first 20 wins season since 2007-08 and the first under Major. He guided the 49ers to their first postseason tournament appear- ance since 2008 with an NIT appearance. Henry earned A-10 All-Defen- About Major sive team honors. A member of his second recruiting class, Willie Clayton earned Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team honors. ALAN MAJOR Year four of the Major era, the 49ers captured the Puerto Rico Purdue Univ., 1992 Tip-Off title with wins over 2013 Big 12 Co-Champs Kansas State, 2013 CAA Champs Northeastern and 2013 National Runner-Up Michigan. Cal Lutheran, 1995 (Master’s - Physical Education) Success has followed head coach Alan Major on his college Charlotte Record: 50-50, 4 years coaching path. Prior to his time at Ohio State, Major coached NBA first round choice David West at Xavier and NBA No. 1 draft choice at Pacific. “I’ve been really impressed by Alan’s clear philosophy when it comes to recruitment and scheduling. Coach Major believes in developing his assistants into head coaches just as Coach Matta and coaches he worked under did for him. Oliver is married to Annette Applewaithe and they have two children: Dante (9) and Dallas Oliver (3).

Ryan Odom Assistant Coach Fourth Season Charlotte 49ers head men’s basketball coach Alan Major announced the hiring of Ryan Odom as assistant basketball coach, April 15, 2010. Now in his fourth year, Odom has played an integral role in helping the 49ers go from 10 wins to 21 wins while returning to postseason play with a bid to the NIT last season. Prior to joining the 49ers coaching staff, Odom spent seven years as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech. A 1996 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College, Odom was a member of 2005 ACC Coach of the Year Seth Greenberg’s first staff at Virginia Tech. In his seven years, the Hokies went to the 2007 NCAA Tournament and four National Invitation Tourna- ments. He joined the Hokies after a three-year stint as an assistant to Jeff Jones at American University. Odom was responsible for the coordination of recruiting efforts and assisted with the on-court development. Before American, Odom spent one season as an assistant coach at UNC Asheville for head coach Eddie Biedenbach. Prior to that, he served two seasons as an assistant coach at Furman under Larry Davis and one season under Greenberg at South Florida as an administrative assistant. Odom was a four-year starting point guard at Hampden-Sydney and served as team captain as a senior. He helped the Tigers to an 80-30 overall record dur- ing his playing career and twice led teams to the NCAA Division III tournament. He finished his career as Hampden-Sydney’s leading three-point shooter and was fourth all-time in assists. He and his wife, Lucia, have two sons, Connor and Owen. Odom is the son of Dave Odom, who retired in 2008 as the head coach at South Carolina.

The 49ers won 21 games which marked the program’s first 20 win season since 2007 and first under Major. The 49ers made their first postseason tournament appearance since 2008 with an NIT appearance. Charlotte has increased their win totals in each of the last three seasons from 10 to 13 to 21 overall wins. Charlotte has also increased their conference win total from two to five to eight.
