    AUSTIN YACHT CLUB TELLTALE August 2020 Sailing during Covid-19 Stay safe, stay healthy! Message from the Commodore It is August, it is HOT. We are FEATURED: ENSIGN FLEET back in drought conditions in Central Texas, and the lake is going down pretty rapidly. Russ and the Dock Crew will start moving docks to their first low water positions very soon. Fortunately, there is still plenty of water for sailing and racing. It is great to see the fleets out on Wednesday evenings and on the weekends in their informal racing. The wind has been great this summer! The Board and the Covid Advisory Committee have been working hard to develop a roadmap to reopening the Club. That roadmap will have been sent out to every member via email and will have been posted on the website. It is also included in this Telltale. The roadmap lists which activities and areas are available with what conditions at each Covid stage. The stage we are in is determined by Austin and Travis County. Please be aware that this is a living document. It is constantly under review and may change as conditions and information change. We are hopeful that the downward trend in Covid cases continues and we look forward to opening up more of the Club as it does. Again, a big thank you to the Board and the Covid Advisory Committee for all their hard work.     July 2020 Volume 90, Issue 7 HAPPY 4TH OF JULY Countdown to the America’s Cup The Kiwis won the America’s Cup competition in 2017 and hope to repeat the victory in 2021. Regarding the design team of more than thirty people, over half of them will be new to the 2021 campaign. Technological advances have occurred in quantum leaps starting with the development of the AC75 concept, then writing a rule around that class, even before the design of the two iterations of the AC75 has been finished. Auckland’s Summer of Sailing will kick off with the ACWS/Christmas race in Auckland on December 17. This will be the first time the revolutionary AC75s have lined up together to race, given the pandemic effects of COVID- 19 worldwide which has disrupted development of the vessel, as well as slowed the initially proposed training schedule and preliminary races, two of which had to be cancelled because of COVID-19. The teams are be- ginning to arrive in Auckland and, thus, soon the training schedule can resume. It has been said that the next America’s Cup winning or losing design decisions have already been made. TE AIHE TE KAHU TeKahu, after Boat 1 is one such decision that makes the team unique this campaign. The tasks which have already been accomplished, some of which continue to be in development stages include hitting build dead- lines, streamlining logistics, maximizing testing and training time on the water, reacting to competitors and essentially timing the campaign to peak in the two-week America’s Cup match.

    UNITED STATES PERFORMANCE HANDICAP RACING FLEET LOW, HIGH, AVERAGE AND MEDIAN PERFORMANCE HANDICAPS for the years 2005 through 2011 IMPORTANT NOTE The following pages lists base performance handicaps (BHCPs) and low, high, average, and median performance handicaps reported by US PHRF Fleets for well over 4100 boat classes or types displayed in Adobe Acrobat portable document file format. Use Adobe Acrobat’s ‘FIND” feature, <CTRL-F>, to display specific information in this list for each class. Class names conform to US PHRF designations. The information for this list was culled from data sources used to prepare the “History of US PHRF Affiliated Fleet Handicaps for 2011”. This reference book, published annually by the UNITED STATES SAILING ASSOCIATION, is often referred to as the “Red, White, & Blue book of PHRF Handicaps”. The publication lists base handicaps in seconds per mile by Class, number of actively handicapped boats by Fleet, date of last reported entry and other useful information collected over the years from more than 60 reporting PHRF Fleets throughout North America. The reference is divided into three sections, Introduction, Monohull Base Handicaps, and Multihull Base Handicaps. Assumptions underlying determination of PHRF Base Handicaps are explicitly listed in the Introduction section. The reference is available on-line to US SAILING member PHRF fleets and the US SAILING general membership.
