TERRY KESSEL Reaching out The South African Israeli community is a heterogeneous political society and Telfed caters for everyone. But we all speak of the unrest in the West Bank and together hope for a swift settlement of the problem. It is spring. The ground is sodden after the good winter rains. The day of TuB'Shvath^s passed but its herald to spring remains. Flowers and blossoms are bursting out all over. To borrow from Shakespeare would these same flowers smell as sweet if they had different names? Would Telfed be the same if it had a different name? A recent 'think — tank' thought that our name is no longer applicable as our news is not confined to Tel-Aviv. Anyone have any ideas? If the name you suggest is adopted you win a book-voucher. Money remains a constant topic of conversation and we are pleased to introduce a new column to help you and your finances. We enjoyed all your letters, some of which are included in this issue. Keep sending them and don't forget your simcha pictures!

In the discussion on finance, Telfed said it needed to find means to increase the aid for oHm. At present the important Loan's committee was short of funds. Urgent efforts were being made for people who needed bridging funds. A specific problem were the many students and young people who arrived in Israel without any means of support. Zionfed felt that funds should be diverted from the lUA to Telfed. In the Aliya and klitasess'ion it was reported that there is a general slow-down of all emigration to all countries from South Africa. Haifa meeting with South African Ambassador The South African Ambassador Mr. Anton Loubsher, recently spoke to former residents of South Africa in Haifa on "Israel-South Africa relations". There was an excellent turnout and it was obvious from the questions asked that the interest in this subject was not purely academic but more of a personal nature. South Africa and they spend at least two days a week teaching the blind and other disabled people to bowl. Freddy Ish Shalom is also very much involved as are Matti Degan, Sid Chiat and Zvi Friedman who are teaching those confined to wheel-chairs. Many other offers of help have been received. As most of our potential disabled bowlers work they have difficulty reaching the green during the winter when play starts at 1.30 p.m. Therefore we are trying to get night lights for the green so that more can play throughout the year. This will also help during the summer when play can be\^ enjoyed in the cool of the evenings. Many of the disabled do not have transport. Sports wheel — chairs and sets of bowls are needed. Julius Serguy has invited a team of four blind Israeli bowlers and their trainers to play in South Africa as soon as they are ready. We already have two very good beginners and there are many others with potential waiting for the chance to learn. We need time and help. We will succeed because there is such a need. Over three years ago the South African brothers, Michael, Peter and David Blumberg decided to honour their parents, Alfie and Lillie by making [ Lawn Bowling available to the disabled of Israel. Alfie had been a Springbok bowler. For the past two years I have caught more buses never does anything right. Either he opens the than in my entire life — the record being a total of door too soon or forgets to open it at all. Or forty buses in one week and thus I feel qualified to forgets to close it or closes it on some defenceless write about the joys of catching buses in Israel. old ladies. These old ladies I might add are absolute tigresses in the queue but become very Sleeping in buses is a national pastime and I am defenceless once they are actually on the bus! always fascinated by the way people wake up just in time to get off at their stop or just in time to yell The chorus of "Nehag Nehag" grows ever "Nehag"aher he has closed the doors and if he louder. When you are standing and he hasn't won't open them again to stand there muttering quite got the feel of the brakes, when he stops under their breath until the next stop! you all go rushing to the back of the bus and when Now I know that life in Israel is hard but it is a bit he goes you all land in the front of the bus in a ridiculous when you see people sleeping on the heap! Some of my prettiest bruises have been bus on their way into work, it kind of makes you acquired this way seeing as I don't always get that wonder about what they did the night before! seat in the corner or any seat for that matter! On one trip everyone had been nudnicking the bus Now in order to survive a bus trip one needs to driver and he was in a foul mood. One person/*^ know certain basic facts. My advice to the wanted to pay 70 agorot out of a 50NIS note, one^^ uninitiated is to find a seat as far back as possible, person wanted directions to somewhere in the the back corner is ideal, next to a window and opposite direction, one person had got on the bring a book or a newspaper for someone else to bus on the wrong side of the street and wanted to read over your shoulder. I've even been asked to be dropped off immediately and to top it all the turn the page on occasion! That way, not only will news on the radio had all been bad! Altogether you be able to keep the people around you not a happy trip, when suddenly, near the Shouk occupied but you will not see anyone who is HaCarmel the bus driver stops the bus, gets out standing in the aisle next to you. At first I used to of his seat (I thought he'd decided to become a stand up for anyone who looked even six months bank teller and was deserting us) and hops off the older than 1... now I don't see anyone! I have bus to help an old lady with baskets laden, onto learnt the value of having a seat on the bus and the bus! Boy did he become an instant hero in the this especially since the day I witnessed an eyes of all his passengers and I felt as though argument between a man and his dog sitting on there was hope for the human race yet! the seat next to him and another poor individual It is possible to carry on with these stories ad standing in the aisle next to them. The dog was sitting nicely on the seat and looking interestedly nauseum but I'll end off with one story to top out of the window and the man in the aisle was them all. carrying on about why couldn't the dog sit on the A man got onto the bus with an agalah but floor and since when does a dog need a seat on a instead of getting on in the front like a mensh he bus and normal dogs sit on floors not on seat etc got on at the bacK where people are supposed to etc. But you see this was a Jewish dog and he get off. The nehagtold him to get off again and to needed to see out of the window, after all he get on at the front. This he refused to do and might miss something stimulating, so much so immediately the bus was split into two sides... for that his owner had bought a ticket for him! He and against. Well amidst much cursing (the was therefore entitled to a seat and zeh hoo! I mothers were covering their children's ears so I ^ buried my head further in my newspaper just in gathered it was pretty blue!) and discussion on case someone should ask for my opinion. It is a the part of all, the bus passed a police station common occurrence on buses to be asked for whereupon the man daringly taunted the bus your opinion on the matter of some dispute or driver to take him to the police and let them sort it other and in this case I was actually speechless! all out. No trouble., to him, the bus driver Sometirnes I read other peoples newspapers or promptly stopped the bus, left all the passengers salary slips or bank statements (they do sit and sitting. He and the passenger and the agalah got study the strangest things on buses!) but when off the bus and went into the police station. Now I the guy next to me is reading "Penthouse" then I don't know what transpired in the police station stare very studiedly out of the window! but the last vision that we, the passengers had, was of the man flying off down the road followed Looking out of the window can also be a rather hair-raising occupation because then you can see by three policeman and the agalah sitting just how close the bus driver was to that car or forlornly on the pavement. The driver got calmly how he squeezed between the bus to Jerusalem back into the bus and drove on as though nothing and the bus to Haifa I'll never know! had ever happened. To his day I wonder about that poor agalah sitting on the pavement! Now for the driver himself, commonly known as "Afe/iag" as he is addressed by his passengers In Israel its a matter of "Go by bus and see the and seldom in a complimentary manner! He world"!!! 27 People

We at Old City have been pioneers of a different kind. For the last several years as portfolio advisers \we have championed the concept of FUTURES. In every portfolio large and small — we have insisted on the compulsory inclusion of FUTURES which act as a HEDGE, a type of insurance — policy, against the volatility found in all other traditional investments: currencies, bonds, property, shares, precious metals, etc.

Harvard Business School suggests that 30% of an investor's portfolio should consist of FUTURES, for FUTURES are unique in theircapability of performing equally well in economic booms and depressions, in both the bull and the bear market.

We were also the first to advise on the "GUARANTEED INVESTMENT" concept in the FUTURES market, where the investor's worst case is the return of his original capital. Those who followed this advice on such GUARANTEED INVESTMENTSfor the past few years have, on average, compounded their investment by 30% a year (even in 1987, the year of the Big Crash).
