Wise and Dr. Pamela Beattie, whose lectures provide me with critical knowledge about the early days of the western culture and therefore are indispensible to the conception of my dissertation. iv ABSTRACT FREEDOM IN MIDDLE FRENCH ENLIGHTENMENT: INTERPRETED THROUGH A PICTURESQUE GARDEN NingJia July 27,2010 Freedom is a critical concept that helps shape the discourse of modern society and corresponding thoughts about people's private, public, cultural and spiritual lives. Standing at the fountainhead of the modern era, the Enlightenment was a critical period when this concept was defined, analyzed and debated in modern terminology with modern questions directed at modern problems. However, despite its importance, scholars in the twentieth century have disagreed about what to make of the Enlightenment liberal tradition. What was not fully discussed were the cultural sentiments and artistic expressions that interacted with the intellectual and political domains. To complement this, this dissertation examines a French picturesque garden which is a typical manifestation of the social and cultural spirits of middle French Enlightenment, and which facilitates understanding of the connotations and features of the concept of freedom. The dissertation adopts a three-layered structure: analysis of the garden, the cultural ideas reflected in the garden, and the concept of freedom constructed in this v cultural background. Each layer is based on findings from the previous one, and elevates the discussion on the garden to the cultural and then the political levels. Specifically, the first two chapters are preparatory chapters that provide background information about the garden and the cultural trends at the time under discussion. Chapter I introduces the garden, its owner and his social circle. Chapter II examines the cultural background by way of a discussion of the competing ideas of aesthetics. Each of the next three chapters is devoted to one outstanding feature observed from the garden that bears a critical relationship to the concept of freedom. Chapter III deals with the epistemological and teleological dimensions of the passion for nature in its natural form. Chapter IV discusses the urge to embrace "all times and places". Chapter V takes up the representation of "otherness" and its implication for the concept of freedom.     FOLK SONG IN CUMBRIA: A DISTINCTIVE REGIONAL REPERTOIRE? A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Susan Margaret Allan, MA (Lancaster), BEd (London) University of Lancaster, November 2016 ABSTRACT One of the lacunae of traditional music scholarship in England has been the lack of systematic study of folk song and its performance in discrete geographical areas. This thesis endeavours to address this gap in knowledge for one region through a study of Cumbrian folk song and its performance over the past two hundred years. Although primarily a social history of popular culture, with some elements of ethnography and a little musicology, it is also a participant-observer study from the personal perspective of one who has performed and collected Cumbrian folk songs for some forty years. The principal task has been to research and present the folk songs known to have been published or performed in Cumbria since circa 1900, designated as the Cumbrian Folk Song Corpus: a body of 515 songs from 1010 different sources, including manuscripts, print, recordings and broadcasts. The thesis begins with the history of the best-known Cumbrian folk song, ‘D’Ye Ken John Peel’ from its date of composition around 1830 through to the late twentieth century. From this narrative the main themes of the thesis are drawn out: the problem of defining ‘folk song’, given its eclectic nature; the role of the various collectors, mediators and performers of folk songs over the years, including myself; the range of different contexts in which the songs have been performed, and by whom; the vexed questions of ‘authenticity’ and ‘invented tradition’, and the extent to which this repertoire is a distinctive regional one.

France and Venice Antoine Watteau (1684 – 1721) was a French painter whose brief career spurred the revival of interest in colour and movement, as seen in the tradition of Correggio and Rubens. He revitalised the waning Baroque style, shifting it to the less severe, more naturalistic, less formally classical, Rococo. Watteau is credited with inventing the genre of fêtes galantes, scenes of bucolic and idyllic charm, suffused with a theatrical air. Some of his best known subjects were drawn from the world of Italian comedy and ballet. The Love Song c1717 The Embarcation for Cythera 1717 The Embarkation for Cythera portrays a "fête galante"; an amorous celebration or party enjoyed by the aristocracy of France during the Régence after the death of Louis XIV, which is generally seen as a period of dissipation and pleasure, and peace, after the sombre last years of the previous reign. The work celebrates love, with many cupids flying around the couples and pushing them closer together, as well as the statue of Venus.There are three pairs of lovers in the foreground. While the couple on the right by the statue are still engaged in their passionate tryst, another couple rises to follow a third pair down the hill, although the woman of the third pair glances back fondly at the goddess’s sacred grove. At the foot of the hill, several more happy couples are preparing to board the golden boat at the left. With its light and wispy brushstrokes, the hazy landscape in the background does not give any clues about the season, or whether it is dawn or dusk.

The strict codification of dress backed by sumptuary laws asserting an unchanging social structure, was completely undone by social, philosophical, scientific, political and economic change. Rising incomes, the spread of literacy and print culture, the introduction of new cottons and cheaper techniques of production and printing meant that more types and numbers of garments and fabrics entered the wardrobes of the bourgeoisie, as well as artisans, tenant farmers, mechanics and the servant class. The consumer appears for the first time as a social character. People were more than citizens, tax- payers or identified by their occupation: what they consumed came to communicate their identity. Shops increased in number and were frequented by all social classes. The luxury trades and the ‘appearance industry’ (clothing, wigging, make-up, deportment) were a central feature of the economy, employing close to one third of the masters in a city. The idea of fashion as the aspiration to something new, in replacement of what one already owns, emerged. The evidence for this is derived from a close reading of the published discourse of the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects, particularly the now defunct professional journal, The Landscape. Through conceptualising the picturesque as a language, a model is developed which provides a framework for recording the survey results. The way in which the picturesque persists as naturalised conventions in the discourse is expressed as four landscape myths. Through extending the metaphor of language, pidgins and creoles provide an analogy for the introduction and development of the picturesque in New Zealand. Some implications for theory, practice and education follow.   • Picaresque Picturesque
    Picaresque picturesque Dudley Zoo by Tecton and Berthold Lubetkin Karolina Szynalska May 2010 2 Walking around Dudley zoo on a fresh spring morning; I was contemplating pleasing decay. In 1825 Thomas Atkins and George Wombwell, Wild Beast Merchants , were both exhibiting their menagerie collections in London at Bartholomew fair. Wombwell had to travel from Newcastle, where he had been exhibiting prior to the fair. It took ten days of gruelling travel, which resulted in the unhappy event of Wombwell’s prize exhibit, his elephant, dying of exhaustion on arrival. Atkins responded to this by advertising the only living Elephant at the fair . Wombwell countered – the only dead Elephant at the fair! , exhibited the dead monster, and did much better business than Atkins. The lifeless creature appeared to be a greater attraction than the living one. Decay is attractive (or even cathartic). Pleasing decay is a part of the vocabulary of English romantic painting Those people who have no eye for it say that it indicates a decay of the mind to dwell on it; those who have an eye for it say that a weathered building can symbolize the whole of man’s relation to nature (Piper 1947: 85). Those who can see it and celebrate it are romantic. Piper believed that a big factor of the picturesque movement was an expression of the Romantic fuss about pleasing decay (Piper 1947: 85-87). He sought, however, to draw a firm distinction between a ruin and pleasant decay. Not all decay can be pleasing. A description opposite to pleasing is ridiculous , which the Duchess of Marlborough used to describe John Vanburgh’s (1664 – 1726) famous proposal to retain the old ruined manor as a feature in the landscape of the new Blenheim Palace.
