PONNANI PEPPER PROJECT HISTORY Ponnani is popularly known as “the Mecca of Kerala”. As an ancient harbour city, it was a major trading hub in the Malabar region, the northernmost end of the state. There are many tales that try to explain how the place got its name. According to one, the prominent Brahmin family of Azhvancherry Thambrakkal once held sway over the land. During their heydays, they offered ponnu aana [elephants made of gold] to the temples, and this gave the land the name “Ponnani”. According to another, due to trade, ponnu [gold] from the Arab lands reached India for the first time at this place, and thus caused it to be named “Ponnani”. It is believed that a place that is referred to as “Tyndis” in the Greek book titled Periplus of the Erythraean Sea is Ponnani. However historians have not been able to establish the exact location of Tyndis beyond doubt. Nor has any archaeological evidence been recovered to confirm this belief. Politically too, Ponnani had great importance in the past. The Zamorins (rulers of Calicut) considered Ponnani as their second headquarters. When Tipu Sultan invaded Kerala in 1766, Ponnani was annexed to the Mysore kingdom. Later when the British colonized the land, Ponnani came under the Bombay Province for a brief interval of time. Still later, it was annexed Malabar and was considered part of the Madras Province for one-and-a-half centuries. Until 1861, Ponnani was the headquarters of Koottanad taluk, and with the formation of the state of Kerala in 1956, it became a taluk in Palakkad district. -

This is the English translation of “Ulema-e-Deoband ka Takfeeri Afsana” by Maulana Muhammad Hasan Ali Melsi Qaadiri Rizwi (Madzillahu ‘Aali). I have entitled its English translation as “Deoband Vs Deoband”. Mostly we see books of Sunni scholars proving the beliefs and traditional acts of Muslims from authentic sources, but this book is special in this regard that it tells a neutral man about the in house fights of deviants, after seeing which any kid can also decide which sect, indeed path is the true one. Today, the people who falsely blame great Sunni scholars to be guilty of making invalid Takfeer (to declare somebody as infidel) of people all the time; they should now be ashamed by seeing this machine-gunning with the bullets of Takfeer by their own elders all over that they didn’t even leave their own cult in blindly bombarding with Takfeer. I’m grateful to Brother Irfan Edhi of Madinatul Muawwarah who recognized the potential in me, when I myself was unaware of it and encouraged me to translate this splendid work. Of course hard work and beauty of work by Brother Mumtaz Hussain Akhtar ul Qaadiri deserves a place here, who proofread this translation, adorned the font and presentation. -

It introduces the importance of class and the state in shaping piety and its politicization. The project challenges the common conflation of piety and politics and thus, the tendency to homogenize “political Islam” even in the context of secular states. It shows how there have been convergent forms of piety and specifically gendered practices across the two cities—but divergent Muslim class relations and in turn, forms of politics. I present four types of movements. In Hyderabad, a Muslim middle-class redistributive politics directed at the state is based on patronizing and politicizing the subaltern masses. Paternalistic philanthropy has facilitated community politics in the slums that are building civil societies and Muslim women’s participation. In Lyon, a middle-class recognition politics invites and opposes the state but is estranged from sectarian Muslims in the working-class urban peripheries. Salafist women, especially, have withdrawn into a form of antipolitics, as their religious practices have become further targeted by the state. -

Prophet Muhammad was not only the founder of a new religion, but he was also the head of a city-state. Muhammad left no male heir. On his death claims were made on behalf of his son-in-law and cousin Ali, but senior members of the community elected as their leader or caliph, the Prophet's companion, Abu Bakr, who was one of the earliest converts to Islam. Abu Bakr died after only two years in office, and was succeeded by Umar (r. 634-644 ), under whose leadership the Islamic community was transformed into a vast empire. Umar was succeeded by Usman (r. 644-656), who was followed by Ali (r. 656661), the last of the four "Righteous Caliphs." Owing to his relationship with the Prophet as well as to personal bravery, nobility of character, and intellectual and literary gifts, Caliph Ali occupies a special place in the history of Islam, but he was unable to control the tribal and personal quarrels of the Arabs. After his death, Muawiyah (r. 661- 680), the first of the Umayyad caliphs, seized power and transferred the seat of caliphate from Medina to Damascus. Three years later the succession passed from Muawiyah's grandson to another branch of the Umayyad dynasty, which continued in power until 750. During this period the Muslim armies overran Asia Minor, conquered the north coast of Africa, occupied Spain, and were halted only in the heart of France at Tours. -

BAB IV HA SIL DAN P EMBAHASAN HASIL DAN PEMBAHASAN A. Islam dan Asia Selatan, Sebuah Gambaran Singkat Anak benua India sebelum terpecah menjadi beberapa negara yang di antaranya ialah Pakistan dan Banglades merupakan sebuah wilayah di Asia Selatan dengan luas wilayah hingga kurang-lebih 2.075 mil yang membentang dari Timur hingga ke Barat. Wilayah ini dihuni oleh penduduk yang secara umum dapat dikelompokkan ke dalam empat elemen ras utama, yaitu Mongoloid, Negroid, Europoid dan juga Vedoid (Thohir dan Kusdiana, 2006: 43-69). Daerah ini merupakan tanah kelahiran dari beragam kepercayaan besar seperti Hindu, Budha, Jain dan juga Sikh. Namun, penganut agama dan kepercayaan yang lain juga dapat ditemui, di antaranya ialah Islam, Kristen, Katolik, Zoroaster, bahkan Yahudi. Daerah Hindustan dikenal oleh kaum Muslimin dengan sebutan Sind. Mereka mengenalnya dengan kuat sejak Panglima Dinasti Umayyah, Muhammad Ibn Qasim atas perintah Khalifah al-Walid pada 711 M melakukan penyerbuan dan berhasil menduduki wilayah Indus Bawah. Penaklukan yang berikutnya dilanjutkan pada masa Dinasti Abbasiyah. Serbuan yang dipimpin oleh Mahmud Ghazna ini, berhasil melengkapi lingkup kekuasaan yang sebelumnya dengan memasuki Anak Benua India ini. When I am writing this article during the beginning of the new year, 2015, the world and the Indian subcontinent are going through certain uneasy experiences ranging from the violent reaction in the aftermath of the publication of cartoons in some western newspapers allegedly hurting the sentiment of millions of Muslims all over the world, when quite a few innocent school children perished in a brutal attack in Peshawar, when the Indian state of West Bengal is trying to recover from the infamous Khagragarh (in Burdwan district) explosion, when certain south asian regions are being exposed for the alarming imbalance in sex ratio confirming the prevalence of female foeticide even during the second decade of the twenty first century, the stereotyping of Islam as an intolerant, homogeneous and violent religion gathered momentum in the oriental and occidental worlds.1 In the context of these developments at the regional and trans-regional levels, the study of Islamic mysticism is becoming more and more relevant particularly due to the tolerant, spiritual and humane outlook of the Muslim mystics and the appropriating and accommodating nature of various sufi orders which created ripples in the socio-spiritual world of the subcontinent. Ironically, the sufis are virtually eliminated from the world of their origin, i.e., Central Asia and the Middle East. However, in South Asia where the Muslim mystics once took spiritual refuge, Sufism is still vibrant as a spiritual and cultural force. Existence of Sufism proves that like any other religion, Islam is also characterized by heterogeneity. -
