The Chancery will return to regular hours after Labor Day, on Tuesday, September 2, 2014. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday, July 7, 2014, at Holy Cross Church of Prince of Peace Parish, Lewiston. Deacon George Stevens, Jr., 92, who died on Monday, July 7, 2014, at his home, surrounded by family. George was one of three Native Americans ordained for our diocese in the first class of permanent deacons. The Most Reverend Robert P. Deeley was the principal celebrant at his Mass of Christian Burial, which was celebrated on Monday, July 14, 2014, at Immaculate Conception Church of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Parish, Calais. Mrs. Jacqueline Marie (Gilbert) Vaillancourt, 83, mother of Fr. Robert (“Bob”) Vaillancourt, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2014, surrounded by family. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Thursday, July 17, 2014, at the Basilica of Saints Peter & Paul, Prince of Peace Parish, Lewiston. The Most Reverend Robert P. Deeley, Bishop of Portland, presided; Fr. Vaillancourt was the principal celebrant and homilist. Ms. Louise M.G. Pare, 75, sister of Fr. Paul M. Pare, who died on Monday, July 14, 2014, at her home in Lewiston. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday, July 21, 2014, at Holy Cross Church of Prince of Peace Parish, Lewiston. Reverend L. Chanel Cyr, 88, a priest of the Diocese of Portland, who died on Friday, July 18, 2014, in Eagle Lake. The Most Reverend Robert P. Deeley, Bishop of Portland, was the principal celebrant at the Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, July 24, 2014, at St. Louis Church of the Parish of the Precious Blood, Limestone, Maine; the Very Rev. Jean-Paul Labrie was the homilist. Members of the Diocesan Priests’ Benefit Plan are reminded to offer three (3) Masses for his intention. Mr. Raoul G. Paquette, 92, brother of Fr. Hubert Paquet, a priest of the Diocese of Portland, who died on Friday, July 18, 2014, in Saco. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday, July 21, 2014, at St. Joseph Church of Good Shepherd Parish, Biddeford. Reverend Marcel L. Dumoulin, 78, a priest of the Diocese of Portland, who died on Wednesday, July 30, 2014, in Canton, ME. The Most Reverend Robert P. Deeley, Bishop of Portland, will be the principal celebrant at the Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, August 4, 2014, at St. Athanasius & St. John Church of Holy Savior Parish, Rumford, Maine; the Very Rev. Paul Plante will be the homilist. Members of the Diocesan Priests’ Benefit Plan are reminded to offer three (3) Masses for his intention. Please pray also for the consolation of their friends and families, natural and religious. Liturgical Notes & Upcoming Events World Acadian Congress Mass: On Friday, August 15, 2014, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Patroness of Acadians, the Most Reverend Robert P. Deeley, J.C.D., Bishop of Portland, will be the principal celebrant and co-homilist (along with the Most Reverend Claude Champagne, o.m.i., Bishop of Edmundston, New Brunswick) of a special Mass held during the World Acadian Congress. The Mass begins at 10:00 a.m., on the grounds of the multipurpose building in Madawaska. All clergy, lay, and religious are invited to participate. This Mass does fulfill the holy day obligation. No collection will be taken at this Mass. Bishop Deeley also invites all priests and deacons to join him for a post-Mass lunch in the parish hall at St. David Church of Notre Dame du Mont Carmel Parish. The menu includes a traditional chicken stew served with ployes. Clergy should RSVP for the Mass and lunch to: [email protected]. Holy Day of Obligation – The Assumption: This year, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, August 15, falls on a Friday; therefore, it is considered a holy day of obligation. The Vigil Mass of the Assumption may be celebrated on Thursday evening, August 14, beginning at 4:00 p.m., either before or after Evening Prayer I. The prayers and readings proper to the Vigil must be used. A Pro Populo Mass (for the people) must be offered. Funeral and nuptial/wedding Masses are not permitted. Liturgy of the Hours – Ordinary Time: Volume III, beginning with Morning Prayer on Monday, June 9, 2014; to be used through midafternoon prayer on Saturday, August 2, 2014. Volume IV, beginning with Evening Prayer I of the 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Saturday, August 2, 2014; to be used through midafternoon prayer Saturday, November 29, 2014. Volume I, beginning with Evening Prayer I of the 1st Sunday of Advent, Saturday, November 29, 2014. Finance & Administration REVISED Mileage Reimbursement Rate: Effective April 1, 2014, the diocese has authorized the use of the previously approved (January 1, 2014) IRS reimbursement rate of $0.56/mile for “business travel.” (Please note that this is a decreased reimbursement rate by ½ cent/mile.) Upon presentation of documentation that indicates the day, the main points of travel, the distance, and the nature of the business travel, parishes and diocesan offices are permitted to reimburse at the rate of $0.56/mile. The travel must be related to one’s assigned duties for the parish or the diocese, have proper documentation, and cannot include commuter miles (that is, miles driven between your residence and primary office/place of work). Special Collections: These collections will be taken in all churches of the diocese on the designated weekend. Unless otherwise indicated, all collections must be remitted to the Diocesan Finance Office by the second Friday after the collection. Links to the USCCB website provide resources to assist you in promoting these collections through bulletin inserts, pulpit announcements, prayers, etc. Please encourage parishioners to be generous stewards by supporting the important needs that exist in your parish, at the diocesan level, and for the universal Church.
