All-new Polo R WRC meets rally classic

Endurance test for the second generation Polo R WRC – at the 2015 Rally Monte Carlo Volkswagen will take on the competition in a that has been fundamentally reworked. At the opener of the third season for Volkswagen with the four-wheel drive from Wolfsburg, the spectacular exterior already marks the start of a new task. Double world champions Sébastien Ogier/ Julien Ingrassia (F/F), runners up Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) and last year’s third-placed Andreas Mikkelsen/Ola Fløene (N/N) will compete in the legendary “Monte” in the new blue-blue-white design of the Polo R WRC. There have also been a lot of changes under the bonnet. 75 per cent of the chassis components have been reviewed and some of them have been reworked, in terms of the engine, 315 hp has become 318 hp for 2015. But the most significant innovation for the drivers is the FIA World Rally Championship 05 new gearbox, which for the first time has been implemented as a hydraulically activated system with paddles on the steering wheel.

“Even though it’s the first gravel rally of the year that shows how strong a new car really is, we’re looking forward to seeing how good a fight the new Polo R WRC will put on at the Rally Monte Carlo,” said Volkswagen Motorsport director Jost Capito. “The predecessor of the 2015 Polo R WRC won its first at the first time of asking and then won the second rally of the year. But it’s not only new technical challenges that we will face, there is also a new sporting procedure for the starting order that will slow down the world championship leader. With Sébastien Ogier, Jari-Matti Latvala and Andreas Mikkelsen we are starting with three drivers who know how to deal with this. There’s no doubt about it, we can’t wait for the new season.”

New sporting regulations in the WRC New sporting regulations will come into play in the World Rally Championship as of the Rally Monte Carlo. Whereas the world championship leader has previously had to open the route on the first of the three days of , this now applies to the first two days in 2015, with the order for the final day the reverse of the overall standings after the opening two days.

At the “Monte”, the order for the first two days of the rally will be determined according to the final standings at the end of the 2014 World Championship. There has also been a change to the rules governing communication between the teams and their drivers and co-drivers: it was previously permitted to convey split times during special stages. This is now forbidden in 2015. 06 Technology

The Polo R WRC, Version 2.0

The World Championship winning Polo has a younger brother: the new Volkswagen Polo R WRC for the 2015 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) shares the same genes as its predecessor, but has been painstakingly further developed in many areas. While the new blue, blue, white appearance of the production- based shell represents a visual revolution, the optimisation pro- cess under the bonnet was at the heart of the precise evolution. The Volkswagen engineers meticulously inspected 75 per cent of the car that won the championship in 2013 and 2014, seeking out any potential for improvement and gradually pushing ahead with its further development. As well as the complete optimisa- tion of larger modules – such as the sequential gearbox with shift paddles, which is permitted as of 2015 – the chassis and engine of the Polo R WRC have also taken another step forward FIA World Rally Championship 07 technologically, thanks to the sum of many detailed improve- ments made ahead of the 2015 season.

“When developing the first Polo R WRC, our priority was first to develop a fast car, which we then gradually improved until it was also reliable,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito. “This philosophy proved its worth, and has also been applied to the evolutionary further development of the second generation of the Polo R WRC. When we started to improve our World Championship winning car, we did so from an outstand- ing basis. Our engineers went about their work meticulously and with absolute commitment, and the result makes a perfect impression. We are excited to see how our World Rally Car fares against the opposition.”

Getting a shift on – new shift-paddle gearbox Like its predecessor, the 2015 version of the Polo R WRC is based on the same basic car – the roadworthy Polo R WRC. While the principle idea behind the development process was one of evolution, one component was very much the exception: the shift-paddle gearbox, which is permitted for the first time in 2015. This represents a new development in every sense.

In the future, the driver will no longer exert energy shifting gear by pushing and pulling the gear lever. From now on, he will change gear using a shift paddle, which is permanently incorporated in the steering column and electronically conveys the gear change to the hydraulic gearbox. The major benefit: from now on, the driver can always have both hands on the steering wheel. 08 Technical specifications

Rally Monte Carlo Facts and figures

The event The Rally Monte Carlo has been organized each year since 1911 by the Automobile Club de Monaco and takes place along the French Riviera in the Principality of Monaco and southeast France. The event is traditionally held on snow covered, icy mountain roads as well as twisty, narrow roads through small villages.

The venue The 2015 Monte Carlo Rally will once again return to the town of Gap (Hautes-Alpes department), which serves as the main hub for the event. The real race start and finish takes place in Monaco, home of the famous Monaco Formula One Grand Prix.

The country Capital Monaco Area 2.02 square kilometres Population 36,950 Language French Currency Euro Time zone UTC+1

The typical weather The “Monte” provides a unique mix of snow, ice, rain and dry asphalt – the weather predictions are unpredict- able to say the least. The weather can change really quickly within one stage from snow to rain or sun, making the rally a real challenge for the drivers. Rally Monte Carlo 21

The route The 2015 Monte Carlo Rally features some new innovations. The shakedown session will take place in the region south of Gap which regularly hosts stages of the Tour de France. The official race start will be held on Thursday evening at Place du Casino in Monaco followed by two special stages at night in the Alpes de Haute Provence department. Friday features double loops on three stages which have been moved further north of Gap. Saturday will see more classic stages with competitors then returning late afternoon to Monaco. On Sunday, the rally actions take place near the Col de Braus and Col de Turini just before the and a final time control in front of Monaco’s Place du Palais where the traditional prize-giving ceremony can be seen in the afternoon.

Food & drink With France and Italy located nearby, the Monaco cuisine is influenced by these two countries, which are famous for their excellent food and wines. Proximity to the Mediterranean Sea has lead to the popularity of sea food in Monaco. Famous specialities in Monaco are Fougasse, Stocafi, Socca, Barbagiuan and various sorts of cheese.

Speed limit The speed limit within Monaco is 50 kilometres per hour unless otherwise marked by signs. The French motorway road system leading to Monaco is toll paying, which can either be paid by cash, credit card, or via a subscription with the toll company. 22 Rally history

Rally Monte Carlo History

At a glance

The Rally Monte Carlo was first held in 1911 and will take place for the 83rd time this year. It is being organised by the “Automobile Club de Monaco”.

From 1973 to 2008 the rally was held as the first round of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). Since 2009 it had been part of Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) before becoming part of the WRC again in 2012.

The Rally Monte Carlo counts as one of the asphalt runs in the World Championship and weaves its way south from the start line in Gap in the Hautes-Alpes towards the glamor- Rally Monte Carlo 23

ous Principality of Monaco. The surface conditions often alternate within a single special stage, depending on the weather. Selecting the right tyres is an eternal balancing act.

A special flair, historic ambience and the jet set – the Casino de Monte Carlo is definitely worth a visit. Opened in 1863 and overlooking the sea, the Casino has always lent a cer- tain noblesse to the art of gambling. Situated right on the Place du Casino, this is the touristic heart of Monaco where people mingle with the jet set.

The idea behind the Rally Monte Carlo originally had abso- lutely nothing to do with racing. The Monégasques wanted to attract tourists to the Côte d’Azur during the cold winter months, which is why Prince Albert I gave his blessing in 1911 for a rally. The winner of the inaugural edition was Henri Rougier starting with a Turcat-Méry 24CV.

A Volkswagen Group brand was successful in 1984: the German duo Walter Röhrl/Christian Geistdörfer won the Monte Carlo Rally with an Audi quattro.

In 2013, the Rally Monte Carlo marked the debut of the Polo R WRC. Sébastien Ogier won the first special stage of Volkswagen’s new World Rally Car and finished second overall behind record champion Sébastien Loeb.

World Champion Sébastien Ogier and his co-driver Julien Ingrassia continued the winning streak from 2013 and won the last year’s “Monte”. SS 03/06 24 Rally map LA SALLE EN BEAUMONT CORPS Mens SS 04/07 ASPRESLÈSCORPS CHAUFFAYER

Typical Volkswagen

The World Rally Championship commitment sees Volkswagen come full circle: the FIA World Rally Championship is the most important and highest-ranked racing series, in which production-based cars are used. Maintaining a close association with production products has always been an integral part of Volkswagen’s motorsport strategy.

Beetle goes America In 2014, Volkswagen of America has joined forces with US racing specialists Andretti Autosport to form the Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross Team. The Rallycross Beetle with four-wheel drive, a TSI engine generating more than 560 hp (412 kW) is driven by Tanner Foust and Scott Speed, who finished third overall in the 2014 season. Excitement and pure racing are guaranteed. Volkswagen Motorsport and Volkswagen brand 31

Battles, drifts and rock ’n’ roll Since the 2014 season, Volkswagen Motorsport has an exclusive three-year partnership with Swedish rallycross team Marklund Motorsport in the World Rallycross Championship. It was a successful debut season for the Volkswagen Polo RX Supercar: number one driver Toomas “Topi” Heikkinen finished second, his Swedish team mate Anton Marklund sixth in the overall classifi- cation. Next stop: the 2015 season with more battles, drifts and rock ’n’ roll – powered by Volkswagen.

Success bred through tradition: Volkswagen and Formula 3 Not only in Formula V but also later as engine supplier in Formula 3 from 1979 until nowadays, Volkswagen always focusses on sup- porting young drivers leading towards big careers in Formula One, Le Mans or DTM. Motorsport legends like Michael Schumacher, Tom Kristensen or Bernd Schneider are among the big names. Also current talents as Felipe Nasr, Daniel Ricciardo, junior, Jean-Eric Vergne or Max Verstappen took their first steps in a Volkswagen powered single-seater in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship or British Formula 3 Championship. 32 Websites

GTI: Volkswagen’s sportiest Polo

With the Polo R WRC, Volkswagen has become involved in motorsport in the world championship that is most like series vehicles – the World Rally Championship. Its genes can also be found in Volkswagen’s product portfolio. Such sporting auto mobile icons have the initials “GTI” at Volkswagen – for example, the Polo GTI, whose new generation made its debut at the Paris motor show last year. The new Polo GTI comes with a multitude of technical innovations – from a 192 hp EU-6 engine to the infotainment system with MirrorLinkTM.

The latest addition to the GTI series, with an impressive 141 kW/ 92 hp from a 1.8-litre TSI engine is 9 kW/12 hp more power- ful than its predecessor. The “young wild one” sparkles with a driving performance typical of GTI. In only 6.7 seconds, the Polo Volkswagen Motorsport and Volkswagen brand 35

GTI accelerates from zero to 100 km/h, its top speed peaks at 236 km/h. A maximum torque of up to 320 Nm ensures agility no matter what happens on the road. Meanwhile, the extreme efficiency of the Polo GTI can be seen in its consumption data: the Polo GTI with DSG uses 5.6 litres every 100 km (129 g/km

CO2) while the version with a manual 6-speed gearbox needs

6.0 litres every 100 km (139 g/km CO2).

Standalone bumpers, red GTI emblem, distinctive side skirts and the rear spoiler unique to the GTI make the Polo GTI distinctive at first sight. A sport chassis, 17 inch alloy wheels and fog lights also come as standard. In the interior, a sporty steering wheel, the combination instrument and sporty seats in the style of the larger Golf GTI testify to its sporting genes.

The driving experience in the Polo GTI is even more dynamic with the new optional “Sport Select” chassis (electronically adjustable dampers) with the “Sport Performance Kit”. At the touch of a button, the chassis, gearbox, engine sound and steering are tuned to be more agile. LED main highlights are optional.

The infotainment pallet has also been completely redesigned, with three radio CD systems and a radio CD navigation system. Depending on the version, the devices come with functions such as Bluetooth audio streaming (in conjunction with a smartphone incl. cover display and touchscreen control), a parking sensor and connecting a mobile phone to the external antenna of the vehicle via an inductive interface. MirrorLink also lets you use special smartphone apps via the touchscreen. 36 Partners
