Fund Af Småsommerfugle Fra Danmark I 1989 (Lepidoptera) Fund af småsommerfugle fra Danmark i 1989 (Lepidoptera) Otto Buhl, Per Falck, Benny Jørgensen, Ole Karsholt, Knud Larsen & Karsten Schnack Buh!, 0., P. Falck, B. Jørgensen, O. Karshol t, K. Larsen & K. Schnack: Records of Microlepidoptera from Denmark in 1989 (Lepidoptera). Ent. Meddr 59: 29-40. Copenhagen, Denmark, 1991. ISSN 0013-8851. Thisartide repartson interesting Danish Microlepidoptera collected in 1989, and o n reinarkable findings from previous years of specimens not definitive! y identified un til now. The classification and nomenelature follow Schnack (ed.): Ent. Meddr 52: 1-163. Four species are new to the Danish fauna: Glyphipterix schoenicolella Boyd, 1858 (Glyphipterigidae), found in great numbers in one ofthe very few Danish localities with growth of Schoenus nigricans. Eratophyes amasiella (Herrich-Schiiffer, 1854) (Oecophoridae) found at the most northern point of Denmark Hitherta it has strangely enough only been observed in Turkey, Holland and Nordrhein-Westfalen (Germany). Scrobipalpa ocellatella (Boyd, 1858) (Gelechiidae), two specimens came to light at Skallingen in the south-western part of Jutland. Bactra suedana Bengtsson, 1990, newly deseribed from Sweden and Denmark (Ent. scand. 20: 479-88). The North American tortricid Clepsis peritana (Clem.) has been found in three piaces in Denmark In a greenhouse there were man y larvae on Euphorbia pulcherrima. This is the first reported introduetion of this species to Europe. New Danish observations on the biology o f four species are reported: Elachista kilmunella Stt. (Elachistidae). The larva is yellow-white with light brown head. I t mines the lowest part of the leaf-stalk of Eriophorum vaginatum. The egg is often placed near the tip o f a ve ry smallleaf o r low down onalonger one. From here the young larva mines downwards to the root, where i t usually goes intoanother leaf s talk mining it upwards. In late September or early October the larva is full-grown, and the mine has reached the green part o f the leaf. Here the larva hibernates in the mine. Next spring in Marchit leaves the mine without eating anymore and pupates o n a straw or leaf of the food-plant. The pupa is light brown with w hi te ventral and lateral drawings. Indoors at 20°C the imago emerges in about two weeks. At the lo cality in Funen kilmunella is on the wings from about the 10.v. to lO.vi., most! y between l and 5 p.m. Biselachista serricomis (Stt.) (Elachistidae). The biology o f this species has been thoroughly deseribed several times, but the information is not in harmony with Dan ish findings, and should probably be referred to B. freyi (Staudinger, 1870). In Den mark the larva is not found on Carex, even though there is a lot o f Carex in its localities, but on Eriophorum vaginatum. The young larva begins miningjust beyond the root in the w hi te part o f the leaf-stalk, where i t betrays itself by a smal!, irregular, brown spot. Here the larva hibernates. Next spring i t mines upwards and downwards in the leaf-s talk, which is getting more or less discoloured, but i t never enters the green part of the leaf. Indoors the pupation takes place under a smal! tight web. Coleophora adjectella HS. According to Benancler (1962) and Emmet (1980) the larva of this species should hibernate as half-grown and the imago should emerge next summer. This is not the case at a locality in Funen where the species is common on Frunus spinosa. Here the smal! sack-bearing larvae, which are numerous in Septem ber, hibernatein the angles o f the branches o f the foodplant. They eat again du ring En t Meddr 59. 2- 1991 29 the foliowing summer and hibernate once more as full-grown. The imagines emerge next summer. The species occurs with many smal! or many grown-up larvae every second year alternately. Paltodora cytisella (Curt.) (Gelechiidae). According to e.g. Emmet (1988) cytisella should make galls on Pteridium aquilinum in May and June and pupate in the galls. The latter is not confirmed by Danish observations. The larva, which is red-brown with w hi te markings, lives from April to late May in a reddish gal! on the stem or leaf s talk, but it leaves the gall as full-grown, and in all probability pupates on or under the groundsurface. In June it is extremely difficult to find the empty galls as the plants quickly repair the damages caused by the larvae. Many new species, even within well-investigated species groups, have been discovered based initially on differences in DNA barcodes. We barcoded 437 collection Published specimens belonging to 40 pre-identified Palearctic species of the Elachista bifasciella group of moths 9 October 2013 (Lepidoptera, Elachistidae). Although the study group has been a subject of several careful morphological taxonomic examinations, an unexpectedly high number of previously undetected putative species is revealed, resulting in a 34% rise in species number in the study area. The validity of putative new species was subsequently supported with diagnostic morphological traits. We show that DNA barcodes provide a Correspondence and powerful method of detecting potential new species even in taxonomic groups and geographic areas that requests for materials have previously been under considerable morphological taxonomic scrutiny. should be addressed to M.M. (marko. [email protected]) stimates of the number of species on Earth vary from 3 to 100 million, the most recent survey concluding that there are about 8.7 million (61.3 million SE) species based on a quantitative extrapolation of current taxonomic knowledge1.

The female of Elachista leifi Kaila & Kerppola is described based on two females collected in northern Finland. In addition to the larger size; the almost black ground colour, the small light area at fringe at the tip of the forewing and the bluish lustre on the underside of the thorax are the best diagnostic characters. The female genitalia of the species can be separated from those of other closely related species, except E. kilmunella, by the shape of antrum, the teeth of ductus bursae and the size and shape of signum. We did not find any reliable differences in female genitalia between E. kilmunella and E. leifi, due to variation in the characteristics of E. kilmunella. Mr. Stainton has endeavom-ed to arrange these insects ac- cording to theh natural affinities, so far as is practicable with a local collection ; and has taken great pains to ascertain every name which has been applied to the respective species and their varieties, the author of the same, and the date of pubhcation ; the references to such names as are unaccompanied by descrip- tions being included in parentheses : all are arranged chronolo- gically, excepting those to the illustrations and to the figures which invariably follow their authorities. The species in the British Museum Collection are indicated by the letters B. M., annexed. JOHN EDWARD GRAY. British Museum, May 2Qrd, 1854. CATALOGUE BRITISH MICRO-LEPIDOPTERA § III. Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society No. 36 (2012) ADDITIONS, DELETIONS AND CORRECTIONS TO AN ANNOTATED CHECKLIST OF THE IRISH BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHS (LEPIDOPTERA) WITH A CONCISE CHECKLIST OF IRISH SPECIES AND ELACHISTA BIATOMELLA (STAINTON, 1848) NEW TO IRELAND K. G. M. Bond1 and J. P. O’Connor2 1Department of Zoology and Animal Ecology, School of BEES, University College Cork, Distillery Fields, North Mall, Cork, Ireland. e-mail: <[email protected]> 2Emeritus Entomologist, National Museum of Ireland, Kildare Street, Dublin 2, Ireland. Abstract Additions, deletions and corrections are made to the Irish checklist of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). Elachista biatomella (Stainton, 1848) is added to the Irish list. The total number of confirmed Irish species of Lepidoptera now stands at 1480. Key words: Lepidoptera, additions, deletions, corrections, Irish list, Elachista biatomella Introduction Bond, Nash and O’Connor (2006) provided a checklist of the Irish Lepidoptera. Since its publication, many new discoveries have been made and are reported here. In addition, several deletions have been made. A concise and updated checklist is provided. The following abbreviations are used in the text: BM(NH) – The Natural History Museum, London; NMINH – National Museum of Ireland, Natural History, Dublin. The total number of confirmed Irish species now stands at 1480, an addition of 68 since Bond et al. (2006). Taxonomic arrangement As a result of recent systematic research, it has been necessary to replace the arrangement familiar to British and Irish Lepidopterists by the Fauna Europaea [FE] system used by Karsholt 60 Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society No. 36 (2012) and Razowski, which is widely used in continental Europe.
