This important initiative is designed to recognise those patrolling the boundary, manning the goal line and controlling the action out in the middle each week and the huge role they play in our game. There are more than 7,000 registered umpires in Victoria at community and state-league level, who, along with thousands of club-based umpires, commit their time and energy to allow those chasing the sherrin the chance to do so. To mark the occasion, the AFL Umpire Squad will forgo their usual training session and instead disband and travel to regional centres to join in sessions with local umpiring groups. In another fantastic initiative, selected Victorian umpires will lead out their AFL counterparts at AFL matches in Round 7 and enjoy a taste of the atmosphere created at the MCG, Etihad Stadium and Simonds Stadium. AFL Victoria’s Umpire Talent Pathway continues to strengthen and our state squad, managed by Cameron Nash, is now regarded as the best breeding ground for future AFL umpires. All three fi eld umpires who off iciated last year’s VFL Grand Final graduated to the AFL Squad at season’s end and are now making their mark at the elite level. It is essential to provide opportunities for young umpires to develop and there are a number of community programs in place underpinning the pathway to ensure they receive the training and guidance to reach their potential. Community Umpire Round is also another opportunity to encourage those who want to be involved in the greatest game in the world to take up umpiring. If you are new to the game, or you’re playing days are over, than umpiring is a great way to contribute to community football. Huge eff orts are being made to attract young umpires across Victoria with AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan earlier this month off icially launching a Multicultural Umpire Academy in Shepparton. Another Multicultural Academy is also operating at the Australian International Academy in Coburg and off ers students a chance to learn about umpiring in a safe and inclusive environment. One of the most exciting trends in umpiring is the growing number of females who are fl ocking to take up umpiring. Earlier this month, a TAC Cup match was off iciated by an all-female umpiring panel, illustrating their growing prominence in the game and marking another step on the quest to have females umpiring at the elite level. It’s important to respect all umpires and recognise how important they are to the game each and every week, but this Round in particular we ask players, coaches and supporters to stop and think about those out in the middle with whistles and fl ags in hand and appreciate the role they play.
