Biodiversity for Every One's Life Biodiversity for Every One’s Life Jointly organized by Miranda House, University of Delhi and Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), Manipur Date: 31August 2018 Time: 9.00 am to 06.00 pm Venue: Auditorium, Miranda House, University of Delhi Preamble This Conclave aims to explore Biodiversity from a multifaceted perspective, from scientific understanding to its conservation and expansion. It will pose two important questions: How do we make biodiversity an inseparable part of day-to-day life? How do we make biodiversity an integral part of every citizen’s conscious self? India is proud to have some of the major hotspots of biodiversity in the world, particularly the N- E states in India. Its health is important for sustainable development of the entire country. It also throws challenges as to how to keep the aspirations of the people of N-E fulfilled and at the same time, maintain and expand the biodiversity. Similar problems/issues affect other biodiversity hotspots in the country. With increased human migration, exchange of living and non-living commodities across the globe, introduction of invasive species, new epidemic outbreaks, and more importantly the local and the global impact of climate change, we need to re-examine the dynamics of Earth's ecosystem from a newer perspective. An understanding of the Earth’s ecosystems and measures to sustain the health of the Earth for the future requires multi-disciplinary approaches. With the help of tools of big data analysis, foundations of planetary science and ecology and evolution, we may start identifying key factors that affect biodiversity and, thereby, ecosystem function and services. While multidisciplinary research is taken up to study ways to keep the living earth healthy for centuries to come, in parallel, we also need to develop school and university-level curriculum that incorporates these issues in the education system so that future citizens would be well trained to identify better solutions for sustainable and equitable development. While research and education prepare us for a better future, equally important is identifying best possible ways to conserve biodiversity in our own lifetime. There is an urgent need to bring people from academia (science, engineering, medicine, social sciences and humanities, law etc), industry, politics, social service and all concerned citizens to identify immediate solution to mitigate the impact of climate change and identify ways to conserve biodiversity. To discuss various possibilities derived from science, new social norms, new policies and outreach on the topics related to Biodiversity, Miranda House is privileged to host a brainstorming meeting on 31 August 2018. Format The Biodiversity Conclave aims to bring together students, faculty, researchers and concerned citizens from across the city of Delhi. All sessions will be highly interactive. After a brief introduction to the theme by eminent invited speakers, the discussion will be thrown open. The programme will be webcast live on the Miranda House You Tube Channel. The Conclave aims to sensitize and engage everyone to think about Biodiversity and its significance in their individual lives and surrondings. The all encompassing influence of our surroundings on our lives finds many expressions. Several lead up events are being organized to provide a participative and creative forum to students to express themselves. Lead-Up Competitive Events Quiz THEME: JUNGLE JUNGLE BAAT CHALI HAIN Organized by: Jigyasa, the Quiz Society Date: 30 August 2018 Venue: First Prize: Rs. 5000 Second Prize: Rs. 3000 Third Prize: Rs. 2000 The Quiz aims to test and at the same time educate the participants on the topics of Biodiversity, Sustainable Development and the importance of Biodiversity in everyone’s life. This will definitely match up to the quality of those in the Delhi Quizzing Circuit. Close to 50 teams comprising of two members each will take part in the Quiz. Entries received till 27 AUGUST 2018 will be considered. The shortlisted participants (5-6) will be called on a selected date before 31 AUGUST 2018 to present their video or PowerPoint Presentation before the judges. The participants will be judged on the basis of their Content, Creativity and Presentation. Best entries among all will be played during the event on 31 August. Initial selection on basis of online submission of art work This will be an Onsite Painting Event conducted on 30 August 2018 at 2 pm for maximum duration of 4 hours in the Student Activity Centre. Participants will be provided with a Canvas Board of Size 12 inch x16 inch. They can also bring their own canvas of any size. The competition involves the use of only Acrylic or Oil Colours. Set of books titled ‘Swachh Jungle ki kahani – Dadi ki Zubani’ Books published in 15 Indian languages by Publications Division to enable development of cleanliness habit amongst children released. “Saath Hai Vishwaas Hai, Ho Raha Vikas Hai” Exhibition organized and was put up across state capitals for duration of 5-7 days showcasing the achievements of the Government in the last 3 years in various sectors.

A recent exhibition1 on South Asian photography entitled ‘Where Three Dreams Cross: 150 Years of Photography in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh’ highlights indigenous or native photographers as a marker of what India was before the two partitions. This is to suggest that there is a history of image-making that stands outside the ambit of European practitioners. The exhibition featured over 400 photographs, a survey of images encompassing early trends and photographers from the 19th century, the social realism of the mid-20th century, the movements of photography from the studio to the streets and, eventually, the playful and dynamic recourse with image-making in the present.     Arriving at Indira Gandhi International Airport in 2006, I was confronted by an unusually impressive advertisement. It featured a big and grainy black-and-white photograph of the tabla player Zakir Hussain and his dad Ustad Alla Rakha in concert, some time in the mid 1980s, I guessed. Zakir’s dad is reaching over and patting his son’s head, ruffling his hair as if to congratulate the puppy on having barked with such enthusiastic promise. But, with this loving gesture, the pre-eminent tabla player of one generation – in the famous Concert for Bangladesh it’s the grinning Alla Rakha we see accompanying Ravi Shankar on sitar and Ali Akbar Khan on sarod – is also passing on the musical baton to the man Bill Laswell will later describe as ‘the greatest rhythm player that this planet has ever produced’.1 Quite a claim! NOW WE CAN SEE The picture turned out to be by Dayanita Singh, who, in one of the little GEOFF DYER home-made-looking photographic journals from the box set Sent a Letter (Steidl, 2008), has constructed a tribute to her mum: a passing back of something that was never quite a baton. The other six books in the set take their names from places in India – ‘Calcutta’, ‘Bombay’ and so on – whereas this one, with its slightly darker cover, is named after Dayanita’s mother, Nony Singh. It’s made up of either pictures Nony took or of ones she – Nony – found in her husband’s cupboard. There are quite a few pictures of a little girl with a determined little pout or frowning smile who is clearly Dayanita.

The exhibition looks back though the history of post-independence Indian and Pakistani photography, from the now iconic images of Indian society in motion by Magnum photographer Raghu Rai to conceptual artist Atul Bhalla’s documentation of his epic performances seeking to balance our collective contemporary needs and responsibilities with Jatinder Marwaha, Untitled 2, Digital print on hahnemuhle rag paper, 56 x 78 in. our shared history and its consequences. As the exhibition’s title suggests, the work here, taken as a whole, presents a vast panoramic view of South Asia’s complex past, present and future through the vision of a group of artists more varied than encompassing and rooted, both individually and collectively, in the worlds and issues they’re seeking to interpret and present. Raghu Rai, India’s pre-eminent photographer for nearly half a century, has focused on candid snapshots of the whole of India that masterfully capture the country’s ever-evolving regional, cultural and political transformations.

Nicholson Gallery, NCPA “Just by the Way—Rocks, Clouds, Nudes” Raghu Rai January 9—17th, 2007 Bombay Art Gallery Sunil Gupta February 12—28th, 2007 Travelling Peace Women Photography exhibit In 2005, an historic nomination was made to the Nobel Peace Prize Committee. It was a collective nomination of 1000 women working in different fields for peace and social justice. They came from over 150 countries, and diverse backgrounds. The nomination to the Nobel Committee formed the heart of a campaign to make women’s work visible, recognized and supported. The exhibition has 500 A5 size cards with the faces of the women activists on one side, and a quote and short profile text on the other side. These cards include 157 women from South Asia and some from other parts of the world. There is also a display of photographs taken by photographer Gauri Gill who travelled all over India to take the nominees pictures.     – 1 – HABIB RAHMAN MADAN MAHATTA RAGHU RAI Garche hai mulq-e-daccan mei in dino qadr-e-suxan, Kaun Jaye ‘Zauq’ par dilli ki galiyaan chhod kar Sheikh Muhammad Ibrahim Zauq (1789-1854)1 Originally in Urdu by the famous poet Zauq, the above couplet may be transliterated as, “..the seat of power may now rest in the Deccan (Southern India) along with all worldly comforts. But, still who would want to leave the streets of Delhi?” In 2012, Ojas Art presented Delhi... that was a solo show of Raghu Rai’s archival images, spanning more than four decades of his work on Delhi. Seven years later, we present Delhi That Was, exploring the photo archives of Habib Rahman, Madan Mahatta and Raghu Rai. The earliest photographs presented are from the 1950s and span more than six decades of pictorial documentation of Delhi. The images cover different aspects of the city and highlight its architecture, monuments, people and lifestyles. Delhi is very peculiar in multiple ways and takes a lot to get used to — the babudom, loudness, – 2 – – 3 – boisterousness and now of course the pollution. On the other side, we have a rich history, arts, culture, diversity and ironically large green spaces. Raghu Rai’s archives present an astounding insight into Delhi’s heart — with a prolific representation of the people and their emotions that make Delhi, what it is. Interestingly, Delhi Zoo Entrance, one of the images in the exhibition was photographed by Mahatta to photo- document the Delhi Zoo for Rahman and Rahman’s profile picture is by Mahatta! Personally, with two centuries of family history in Delhi, I am the quintessential Delhiwallah, and no other city even comes close to Delhi.
