Only two months later, on the occasion of the signing of a Letter of Intent (November 2017) between The Netherlands and Cuba, which reflects intended cooperation in the field of reduction of costal vulnerability to Climate Change, support to integrated water management and transfer of associated technologies. Soon after, Cuba’s Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and the Environment (CITMA), José Fidel Santana Nuñez, requested in his letter of March 29, 2018, to the Dutch Deputy Minister for Foreign Economic Relations, for Dutch assistance in the field of joint research on coastal flood management with emphasis on the design of infrastructure and environmental engineering in densely populated areas (in this case La Habana) all on the basis of modeling of wave energy dissipation and reduction of coastal vulnerability.

SMITHSONIAN HERPETOLOGICAL INFORMATION SERVICE The first number of the SMITHSONIAN HERPETOLOGICAL INFORMATION SERVICE series appeared in 1968. SHIS number 1 was a list of herpetological publications arising from within or through the Smithsonian Institution and its collections entity, the United States National Museum (USNM). The latter exists now as little more than the occasional title for the registration activities of the National Museum of Natural History. No. 1 was prepared and printed by J. A. Peters, then Curator-in-Charge of the Division of Amphibians & Reptiles. The availability of a NASA translation service and assorted indices encouraged him to continue the series and distribute these items on an irregular schedule. The series continues under that tradition. Specifically, the SHIS series distributes translations, bibliographies, indices, and similar items judged useful to individuals interested in the biology of amphibians and reptiles, and unlikely to be published in the normal technical journals. We wish to encourage individuals to share their bibliographies, translations, etc. with other herpetologists through the SHIS series. If you have such an item, please contact George Zug [zugg @ si.edu] for its consideration for distribution through the SHIS series. Our increasingly digital world is changing the manner of our access to research literature and that is now true for SHIS publications. They are distributed now as pdf documents through two Smithsonian outlets: BIODIVERSITY HERITAGE LIBRARY.

  • The Cuban Fossil Eagle Aquila Borrasi Arredondo: a Scaled-Up Version of the Great Black-Hawk Buteogallus Urubitinga (Gmelin)
/. Raptor Res. 41(4):288-298 © 2007 The Raptor Research Foundation, Inc. THE CUBAN FOSSIL EAGLE AQUILA BORRASI ARREDONDO: A SCALED-UP VERSION OF THE GREAT BLACK-HAWK BUTEOGALLUS URUBITINGA (GMELIN) WILLIAM SUáREZ Museo Nacional de Historia Natural, Obispo 61, Plaza de Annas, Ciudad de La Habana, CP. 10100 Cuba STORRS L. OLSONI Division of Birds, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC 20560 U.S.A. ABSTRACT.•The fossil eagle Aquila borrasi Arredondo from the Quaternary of Cuba is redescribed and transferred to the genus Buteogallus Lesson, in which it represents a gigantic version (ca. 33% larger) of the morphology present in the living Great Black-Hawk B. uruhitinga (Gmelin). Buteogallus borrasi differs from the other large fossil accipitrids recorded in the West Indies, Amplibuteo woodwardi, Gigantoliierax suarezi, and Titanoliierax gloveralleni, in being smaller, less robust, and with proportionately slender hindlimb elements, especially the tarsometatarsus. Although now known with certainty only from Cuba, B. borrasi may have had a wider distribution in the West Indies and perhaps even mainland North America. KEY WORDS: Aquila borrasi; Buteogallus borrasi; Great Black-Hawk; Buteogallus urubitinga; CMba; eagle; fossil EL ÁGUILA FÓSIL CUBANA AQUILA BORRASI ARREDONDO: UNA VERSION AGIGANTADA DE BUTEOGAIIUS URUBHINGA RESUMEN.•El águila fósil Aquila borrasi Arredondo, del Cuaternario de Cuba, es redescrita y transferida al género Buteogallus Lesson.

  • From Eastern Cuba
Ecologica Montenegrina 15: 17-21 (2017) This journal is available online at: www.biotaxa.org/em First record of the whip-spider Paraphrynus cubensis Quintero, 1983 (Amblypygi: Phrynidae) from eastern Cuba ROLANDO TERUEL Centro Oriental de Ecosistemas y Biodiversidad, Museo de Historia Natural "Tomás Romay". José A. Saco # 601, esquina a Barnada, Santiago de Cuba 90100, Cuba. E-mail: [email protected] Received: 15 October 2017│ Accepted by V. Pešić: 28 November 2017 │ Published online: 30 November 2017. The genus Paraphrynus Moreno, 1940 is represented in Cuba by three species, each with very well defined distribution (Armas, 2014; Teruel et al., 2009). Paraphrynus viridiceps (Pocock, 1893) is widespread all over the entire archipelago (main island, Isla de Pinos and many offshore cays and islets), and further occurs in the Bahamas. Conversely, Paraphrynus cubensis Quintero, 1983 and Paraphrynus robustus (Franganillo, 1930) are local endemics from the western and eastern regions of the main island, respectively. Nevertheless, based upon their external morphology and ecology, a different grouping is obtained. On one hand, P. robustus and P. viridiceps are both very similar by having a large size, slender habitus and reddish coloration (fig. 1a-b), and are typical troglophiles and almost exclusively restricted to natural or mildly anthropized habitats. On the other hand, P. cubensis is remarkably distinct by its much smaller size, robust habitus and blackish coloration (fig. 1c-d), and is largely synanthropic and only exceptionally found inside caves. Armas (2013: 16) deemed P. cubensis a troglophile based upon three sporadic cave findings. Nevertheless, when these isolated records are compared with its abundant and widespread occurrence in the surface of karstic places plenty of caves (e.g., the Bejucal-Madruga-Coliseo hills and the northern Havana coastal terraces), it becomes evident that this species is more appropriately classified as a trogloxene.
