DRR-TEAM MISSION REPORT CUBA October 2018 3 SUMMARY Again, just over a year ago, after hurricane Wilma hit the Cuban coast severely in 2005, hurricane Irma swept over the northern coast of Cuba resulting in heavy damages and inundations of coastal settlements. Only two months later, on the occasion of the signing of a Letter of Intent (November 2017) between The Netherlands and Cuba, which reflects intended cooperation in the field of reduction of costal vulnerability to Climate Change, support to integrated water management and transfer of associated technologies. Soon after, Cuba’s Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and the Environment (CITMA), José Fidel Santana Nuñez, requested in his letter of March 29, 2018, to the Dutch Deputy Minister for Foreign Economic Relations, for Dutch assistance in the field of joint research on coastal flood management with emphasis on the design of infrastructure and environmental engineering in densely populated areas (in this case La Habana) all on the basis of modeling of wave energy dissipation and reduction of coastal vulnerability. -

Supporting Information Files Appendix S1 Definitions of the metrics used in this study to describe network structure. Network level parameters: (1) Species richness. Total number of plants and animals in the bipartite network. (2) Connectance. Realized proportion of possible links: sum of links divided by number of cells in the matrix (the latter being the product between the number of higher trophic level species –animals, in our case- and the number of lower trophic level species –plants, in our case). (3) Interaction asymmetry (or interaction strength asymmetry). Difference between the interaction strength (i.e. the relative frequency) of each animal species i on each plant species j and its reverse from the plant perspective, standardized by the sum of interaction strength values of species i on j and of species j on i (Bascompte et al. 2006; extended by Blüthgen 2010). Values vary between −1 and 1, where positive values indicate a high dependence of animal on plant species and negative values indicate the opposite. Given that this variable, by its mathematical definition, is closely associated with web asymmetry, this correlation is accounted with null models (see further details in Blüthgen 2010). Thus, for each network in the data set, we computed 1000 randomized interaction matrices simulated with the Patefield algorithm, which randomly redistributes interaction events among all cells of the matrix while holding the number of interaction events per species constant. Thus, web asymmetries were held constant in all simulated networks, while interactions were reallocated between pairs of species according to species interaction frequencies. The difference between observed asymmetries of interaction strength and the mean asymmetry of interaction strength across the 1000 simulations gives the null- model-corrected asymmetry of interaction strength. -

SMITHSONIAN HERPETOLOGICAL INFORMATION SERVICE The first number of the SMITHSONIAN HERPETOLOGICAL INFORMATION SERVICE series appeared in 1968. SHIS number 1 was a list of herpetological publications arising from within or through the Smithsonian Institution and its collections entity, the United States National Museum (USNM). The latter exists now as little more than the occasional title for the registration activities of the National Museum of Natural History. No. 1 was prepared and printed by J. A. Peters, then Curator-in-Charge of the Division of Amphibians & Reptiles. The availability of a NASA translation service and assorted indices encouraged him to continue the series and distribute these items on an irregular schedule. The series continues under that tradition. Specifically, the SHIS series distributes translations, bibliographies, indices, and similar items judged useful to individuals interested in the biology of amphibians and reptiles, and unlikely to be published in the normal technical journals. Brown Title of Study: Biodiversity of Bariditae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Conoderinae) in Mississippi Pages in Study: 262 Candidate for Degree of Master of Science A survey of Bariditae in Mississippi resulted in records of 75 species in 32 genera and included two undescribed species and 36 new state records. An additional two species were recognized as possibly occurring in Mississippi as well. Diagnoses for all of the genera and species in the state are provided and keys to the genera as well as all of the species were made. Species were found in every county within Mississippi and are representative of the Bariditae fauna of the southeastern United States. Open, prairie-like habitats and aquatic wetland habitats were the habitats with the highest biodiversity of Bariditae in the state. Species of Baris, Geraeus, Linogeraeus, and Odontocorynus, were found in the highest numbers and Linogeraeus and Sibariops were found to be the most speciose genera in the state. -

In view of the importance of sampling these areas, the present study conducted the first butterfly inventory of a coastal area in the state of Paraná. Samples were taken in the Floresta Estadual do Palmito, from February 2014 through January 2015, using insect nets and traps for fruit-feeding butterfly species. A total of 200 species were recorded, in the families Hesperiidae (77), Nymphalidae (73), Riodinidae (20), Lycaenidae (19), Pieridae (7) and Papilionidae (4). Particularly notable records included the rare and vulnerable Pseudotinea hemis (Schaus, 1927), representing the lowest elevation record for this species, and Temenis huebneri korallion Fruhstorfer, 1912, a new record for Paraná. These results reinforce the need to direct sampling efforts to poorly inventoried areas, to increase knowledge of the distribution and occurrence patterns of butterflies in Brazil. A New Species of Choranthus from Hispaniola (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae)

MINNO Department of Zoology, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL 32611, USA ABSTRACT.— Choranthus maria is described from a single female reared from a larva found feeding on the leaves of a young Sabal palm. The type locality is a tropical hardwood forest near Sosua, on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, Hispaniola. The closest relatives of C. maria are C. schwartzi and perhaps C. melissa which are also endemic to Hispaniola. These other species differ from C. maria in color pattern, morphology of the female genitalia, biogeographical distribution, and probably larval hostplants. KEY WORDS: Achylodes, Anastrus, Asbolis, Bahamas, Choranthus maria new sp., Cuba, Cymaenes, Dominican Republic, Ephyriades, Euphyes, Haiti, Nyctelius, Palmae, Panoquina, Perichares, Phocides, Polygonus, Proteides, Puerto Rico, Pyrgus, Pyrrhocalles, Sabal, Urbanus, Virgin Islands, Wallengrenia, West Indies. The genus Choranthus is a biogeographically intriguing group Choranthus maria Minno, new sp. of hesperiine skipper butterflies found in the West Indies. Three species have been previously described from Hispaniola, yet two Diagnosis— Choranthus maria most closely resembles C. others occur on nearby Puerto Rico.
