The Complete EMI Audio Tape Guide By David Winter Version of 23 FEBRUARY 2014 This list contains all known EMI (His Master’s Voice and Columbia) tapes released between 1952 and the early 1960s. Any new version will contain minor fixes or updates, or unreleased titles. If you wish to contribute, please email me at [email protected] with good quality pictures showing what should be updated or added. Thank you. Change log: - New format, hopefully for better reading. Tape catalog prefixes, tape types and misc details: EMI issued their "tape records" under two brands: His Master's Voice (HMV) and Columbia (COL). They were all recorded in 2 channel format, either in mono (twin sided) or stereo (Stereosonic, single sided). They are always 7-inch reels playing at 7.5ips (or 19 centimeters per second). Only a few recordings have been made available both in mono and stereo. However, many titles have been recorded in either format by different performers. Some titles were eventually imported in America by RCA when the company was licenced to produce the equivalent LPs. The table below shows the four catalog codes used for each type of tape and by each brand. Later 4-track stereo tapes and 2-track "Twin Packs" are not included in this list. This guide is based on EMI's catalog of 1958 and may be missing titles released shortly after. • January 2017 List
January 2017 Catalogue Prices valid until Friday 24 February 2017 unless stated otherwise 0115 982 7500 Cover photo taken from Chandos CHAN0816 [email protected] ’Concertos of Josef Guretzky’. 1 Welcome! Dear Customer, Happy New Year! We hope you have all managed to enjoy the festive season. At Europadisc, we have always held the tradition of closing for a full week in between Christmas and New Year, allowing us to have a decent break to spend time with our families. We should now be ready and raring to go for another year! Please remember that Monday 2 January is a bank holiday, so we will be re-opening at 9am on Tuesday 3 January. 2016 felt like a good year for new releases, with several orchestral releases being particularly strong. In 2015, for the first time, we picked out our top 10 recordings for that year and published the results online. All were picked from the weekly review we produce (sent out via email) and this year we have decided to do the same thing, but also publish the results in our catalogue. You will therefore find our Top 10 Recordings of 2016 on the opposite page, with our ‘Disc of the Year’ award going to Thomas Dausgaard and the Seattle Symphony’s stunning performance of Mahler’s Symphony no.10. All ten discs are currently available at reduced prices, but please note that these will expire on 27 January. Moving on to what is new for 2017 - special highlights in January include some particuarly strong releases from Naxos, namely Shostakovich from Boris Giltburg (Disc of the Month, see below), Bernstein from Marin Alsop, Berg’s ‘Wozzeck’ from Hans Graf and Ravel from Leonard Slatkin.

PIRATES, POLICEMEN, AND OTHER PATRIOTS: LATE VICTORIAN 'ENGLISHNESS' AND THE COMIC OPERAS OF GILBERT & SULLIVAN by MELANIE JEAN THOMPSON B.A. (Honours), McGill University, 1999 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Department of History) We accept this thesis as conforming to the required standard THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA August 2001 © Meknie Jean Thompson, 2001 In presenting this thesis in partial folfilment of the requirements for an advanced degree at the University of British Columbia, I agree that the Library shall make it freely available for reference and study. Department of V^i'S'VoOj The University of British Columbia Vancouver, Canada Date A'Uglsr 31,g.C>6f Abstract Music and theatre have long played a particular - but hitherto rather neglected — role in the construction and articulation of national identity. This thesis takes a closer look at that role through an examination of the fourteen "Savoy operas" produced by librettist William S. Gilbert and composer Arthur S. Sullivan between the years 1871 and 1896. It explores the impact these operas had on the formation of a particular idea of 'Englishness' in the late 19th century. The Savoy operas were produced in the context of a larger cultural trend, a historical moment of collective self-examination in which English national identity was being renegotiated and redefined.

  • Discography Malcolm Walker
Discography Malcolm Walker Tis discography was begun in 1984, following a commission from the Mackerras family to contribute to Nancy Phelan’s biography of the conductor, published in 1987. At the time, Sir Charles generously gave up a whole morning and went through his diaries to fill in a number of missing dates and facts, a gesture warmly appreciated by the compiler. In the intervening years the discography has been maintained and updated. Sir Charles’s recording career spanned 58 years and was extremely varied in scope. During that time he was never exclusive to a single company. His TFSWJDFTUP$[FDINVTJD FTQFDJBMMZ%WPǣÈL +BOÈƿFLBOE.BSUJOǰ DPOWFZFE his passion for a country that he first visited not long after the end of the 4FDPOE8PSME8BS)JTFOEFBWPVSTPOCFIBMGPG)BOEFM .P[BSU #FFUIPWFO and Brahms produced revelatory recordings – as did his devoted advocacy of Arthur Sullivan. Note by NS Te format of the entries is as follows: Date (year, month, day), venue, soloists, chorus, orchestra, label; title of work; catalogue number of CD, DVD or other format. In the interests of space and clarity, only CD catalogue numbers are given unless the recording in question has not been released on CD (for details of LP releases, readers are referred to Malcolm Walker’s earlier discography in Phelan 1987). It is a measure of the length of Mackerras’s recording career that his earliest record – of Pineapple Poll – was first issued on twelve 78 r.p.m. sides, and his latest were quickly made available as downloads as well as compact discs. Te present discography lists downloads in cases where no CD has been released, or where a commercially available download has superseded a previously issued CD.
