Reproduction and Growth of Baji-Baji (Grammoplites scaber) in the Kuala Tanjung Waters, Batubara, North Sumatra. Supervised by ERI YUSNI & ASTRID FAUZIA DEWINTA. Baji-Baji belong to the Platycephalidae family. Grammoplites scabers often found in the Kuala Tanjung waters, Batubara, North Sumatra Province. Until now, data on the Baji-Baji in Kuala Tanjung waters have not been obtained, therefore research is needed. This research was done at tangkahan Dusun Sono Desa Lalang Kecamatan Medang Deras Kuala Tanjung on May to July 2019. The aims of this research to determine sex ratio, gonad level maturity, growth pattern, growth parameters and condition of Baji-Baji. Primary data are Baji-Baji observed as much as 505 samples for length and weight measurements. The results concluded that the sex ratio is obtained in an unbalanced state with a ratio of 1:9.31. Gonad level maturity of Grammoplites scabers are TKG II, TKG III and TKG IV. Growth patterns of Baji-Baji in the form of negative allometrics with the equation W = 0,0003L2,2673. Frequency length is 140-275 mm. Von Bertalanffy models of Baji-Baji are Lt=279,30(1-e[-0,77(t+0,691)]). The lowest and highest value of the condition factor is 0.512 - 1.82 morphologically having good obesity. In his formal plan for the Institution, Joseph Henry outlined a program that included the following statement: "It is proposed to publish a series of reports, giving an account of the new discoveries in science, and of the changes made from year to year in all branches of knowledge." This theme of basic research has been adhered to through the years by thousands of titles issued in series publications under the Smithsonian imprint, commencing with Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge in 1848 and continuing with the following active series: Smithsonian Contributions to Anthropology Smithsonian Contributions to Astrophysics Smithsonian Contributions to Botany Smithsonian Contributions to the Earth Sciences Smithsonian Contributions to the Marine Sciences Smithsonian Contributions to Paleobiology Smithsonian Contributions to Zoo/ogy Smithsonian Studies in Air and Space Smithsonian Studies in History and Technology In these series, the Institution publishes small papers and full-scale monographs that report the research and collections of its various museums and bureaux or of professional colleagues in the world cf science and scholarship. The publications are distributed by mailing lists to libraries, universities, and similar institutions throughout the world. Papers or monographs submitted for series publication are received by the Smithsonian Institution Press, subject to its own review for format and style, only through departments of the various Smithsonian museums or bureaux, where the manuscripts are given substantive review.

Environrnrntrrl Biology of Fishes 47: 399-405. 1996. O 1996 Klrrww Auuietnic Publishers. Printed it1 thc Nerherlirr~riv Structures associated with feeding in three broad-mouthed, benthic fish groups William A. Gosline Museum of Zoologx University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI 48/09, U.S.A. Received 28.7 1995 Accepted 26.2.1996 Key words: Feeding structures, Flatheads, Goosefishes. Toadfishes Synopsis The flatheads, toadfishes, and goosefishes discussed here hold certain features in common. All are bottom- living forms with depressed head areas and broad gapes, and all eat large food items: fishes andlor crabs. All have developed structural specializations in association with this diet. The three groups are at most distantly related, and their feeding specializations are different and have evolved from different bases. In flatheads the combination of large food items and depressed head regions seems to have led to the separation of the two halves of the pelvic girdle, a feature in which they differ from their scorpaenoid relatives. Toadfish peculiar- ities associated with feeding are various but most notable in those that pass crabs they eat through the gape and into the mouth. Goosefish feeding is centered around the use of a lure to attract prey to within striking distance. The three fish groups are discussed separately, but their feeding structures are compared to one another in the final section of the paper. Introduction traced in the flatheads. In the toadfishes a variety of modifications seem to be associated with feeding. The three groups under consideration here (Fig. 1) In the goosefishes the modifications are also vari- are the flatheads (family Platycephalidae, order ous, but all appear to be centered around the use of Scorpaeniformes), toadfishes (genera Opsanus and a lure to attract prey Batmchoides, order Batrachoidiformes), and goosefishes (family Lophiidae, order Lophii- formes).

Manchong, including taxonomic survey for commercial coastal fishes landed in the markets of Sarikei, Bintulu, Miri, Labuan and Kota Kinabalu. Totally 518 species from 24 orders and 108 families were obtained. Hundred and three economic species were obtained from trawling survey and 106 species from the markets. The station point at St. 33 and 48 is the highest species richness, 69 and 70 species found. The highest CPUE were obtained at St. 44 and 48 (196 and 144 kg). Demersal species form main composition of the catchs with the 9 dominant economic species. This trawling survey obtained few amount of 37 pelagic species. This survey also found the third record of Hapalogenys analis and Pomadasys auritus from the Southeast Asian waters. Key words: Species composition, Diversity, Fishes, Sabah and Sarawak waters. Brief charac- teristics of families are provided, as well as their overall composition and that of the region studied. The most abundant taxa are noted.
